Hadn't listened to this in years... A VERY underrated album. One of my dad's favorite songs was "Wasn't Born To Follow". Since he died, a little less than two months ago, I've been listening to it a lot lately. Other than that, I've been listening to the complete Sylvester Weaver recordings, from 1923 to 1927. He was one of the first people in history to record what has become known today as blues music. His "Guitar Rag" from 1923 is considered by many to be the first blues song ever recorded.

I suspect it's from 91-92. Brian looked really rough at the end of the Landy years -- it's stuff like this that got Landy kicked off, too. If Brian had remained his 85-86 self, that would be one thing. But the changes from 89-92 were really, really alarming.
I would date the picture as anytime from 1988-90 probably 90. By 1991 he was heavier already. You are right Brian aged dramtically in the late 80's. I would date it from much later. Even though the picture is in black and white, it seems like Brian's hair is pretty grey, or white. Brian didn't really go grey until 1998, I think.

You require the multitrack master tapes, which are basically the rough elements of the recording as they exist on a reel. They then need to be properly combined in a mix on another tape. If you do not have the multitrack master tapes, or elements are missing from them, it's impossible to create a new mix.
For tracks like Do You Wanna Dance or Help Me Rhonda, Brian mixed to mono and then overdubbed elements on top of them. Unless technology permits isolating those elements from the mono masters so they can be used in a stereo remix, a stereo remix is impossible. Of course, Mark Linett did it for Wouldn't It Be Nice, but that's still a sort of bastard stereo. It sounds great but if you're a PURIST it sticks out. Basically Mark couldn't mix the bridge properly in stereo because Mike's bridge vocal wasn't on the multitracks, having been replaced by a vocal from Brian. Mark was able, later on, to isolate Mike's vocal in the mono master and then make a new mix following his original work.
Thanks for the info.

I have a question, if I may. Why can't certain songs be mixed to stereo? I've seen it mentioned a few times, but I've never understood why. I'm not an engineer or producer, mind you, so maybe it's just a process that has gone over my head, so to speak.

I made that quote part of my sig It's funny I remember in 1990 seeing it and saying to my mom that they probably put in the word Buckwheat because that can't swear on ABC (especally in 1990). She thought for a second and said Mike's a big enough dork to really say that. I like Mike but I couldn't help but laugh at what she said.
Your mom sounds fun.

Correct lyric is... "And does the yoga asanas too". ... and no, I have no idea what it means. Asana (Sanskrit आसन ("Asanam"-आसनम् or आसनंis the correct Sanskrit-संस्कृतम् word, "आसन" is because of the influence of other languages like English and Hindi.)sitting down < आस to sit down[1]) is a body position, typically associated with the practice of Yoga, intended primarily to restore and maintain a practitioner's well-being, improve the body's flexibility and vitality, and promote the ability to remain in seated meditation for extended periods.[2] These are widely known as Yoga postures or Yoga positions, which is currently practiced for exercise and as alternate medicine. (from Wikipedia) The real question of this thread is, who in the world of the beach boys would have that kind of knowledge to just casually throw into a song? Well, Al and Mike in particular were studying TM and proably yoga along with it. True. I just saw the words Sanskrit and Hindi and thought, "WTF?".

Last semi-widely "heard" song, in any case. Last recorded one was Lucy Jones, if I'm not mistaken.
Nah - "Lucy Jones" is primo 'shouty' Brian. Odd, considering it was recorded at same session as California Feeling. As I never have actually heard the song, I can't vouch, but those who have heard it have said that it was shouty but not raspy like it got later. I'm about 99.9% certain that "Back home" was the first recording with his raspy vocals. This might be hard to do, but can we define "shouty" and "raspy"? What is the exact difference between the two?

This just might be the last song where Brian has his old voice. He puts on that weird funny voice, but if you listen carefully you can hear the "vintage quality" in his voice. Did that make any sense? It's only on certain words, but it's there.

The best part of that footage doesn't seem to be included in the above broadcast. It's a clip of Al and Brian at a soundcheck. It goes something like this: Brian: I'm tellin' ya Al, I think this show could really go....really be a good show Al: You really think so? Brian: Yeah. We're just that good. And with that, Al laughs his head off.

I wasn't really including solo Brian songs, but it would have been interesting to hear a Beach Boys version of "Meet Me In My Dreams Tonight". For some reason, I think that Mike could have done a really good vocal on "Love and Mercy". Kind of like an updated version of Meant For You. Also, an honourable mention(for me, at least) would be Lady Liberty.

Here's my revised list:
1. Remember (Walking In The Sand)
2. Lahaina Aloha
3. Still Cruisin' 4. Still Surfin'
5. Island Girl 6. Somewhere Near Japan
7. Strange Things Happen 8. Slow Summer Dancin' (One Summer Night)
9. Hot Fun In The Summertime(with a better production. Whether you like to admit it or not, this song is fun. Plain and simple)*
10. Rock And Roll To The Rescue
11. Kokomo
12. Summer In Paradise(with a special accapella(sp?) ending, that would gradually fade out in a big mountain of the vocals that made The Beach Boys what they were, and still would have been had they tried just a little bit harder)*
