5651  Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Re: What are you listening to? on: November 06, 2009, 10:41:06 PM

Hadn't listened to this in years...
A VERY underrated album. One of my dad's favorite songs was "Wasn't Born To Follow". Since he died, a little less than two months ago, I've been listening to it a lot lately. Other than that, I've been listening to the complete Sylvester Weaver recordings, from 1923 to 1927. He was one of the first people in history to record what has become known today as  blues music. His "Guitar Rag" from 1923 is considered by many to be the first blues song ever recorded.

Mike Love, anyone?  Grin

I suspect it's from 91-92. Brian looked really rough at the end of the Landy years -- it's stuff like this that got Landy kicked off, too. If Brian had remained his 85-86 self, that would be one thing. But the changes from 89-92 were really, really alarming.
I would date the picture as anytime from 1988-90 probably 90. By 1991 he was heavier already. You are right Brian aged dramtically in the late 80's.
I would date it from much later. Even though the picture is in black and white, it seems like Brian's hair is pretty grey, or white. Brian didn't really go grey until 1998, I think.
5654  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Songs stuck in mono on: November 06, 2009, 10:19:58 PM
You require the multitrack master tapes, which are basically the rough elements of the recording as they exist on a reel. They then need to be properly combined in a mix on another tape. If you do not have the multitrack master tapes, or elements are missing from them, it's impossible to create a new mix.

For tracks like Do You Wanna Dance or Help Me Rhonda, Brian mixed to mono and then overdubbed elements on top of them. Unless technology permits isolating those elements from the mono masters so they can be used in a stereo remix, a stereo remix is impossible. Of course, Mark Linett did it for Wouldn't It Be Nice, but that's still a sort of bastard stereo. It sounds great but if you're a PURIST it sticks out. Basically Mark couldn't mix the bridge properly in stereo because Mike's bridge vocal wasn't on the multitracks, having been replaced by a vocal from Brian. Mark was able, later on, to isolate Mike's vocal in the mono master and then make a new mix following his original work.
Thanks for the info.  Smiley

I have a question, if I may. Why can't certain songs be mixed to stereo? I've seen it mentioned a few times, but I've never understood why. I'm not an engineer or producer, mind you, so maybe it's just a process that has gone over my head, so to speak.  Smiley

I have video footage of him from around 1993, and he looks like he's in his 70's. You can also see cigarette smoke around him while he's talking.

I've always liked the bootleg version of Constant Companion over the "Bambu" released version. I love that odd effect on Dennis's vocal. It sounds similar to the effect on Carl's voice on Feel Flows. Why wasn't that vocal used?

There is the "shouldn't-ah-lied" lyric that everybody and their brother seems to hear as "shootin' the line". And yes, I was one of them.  Smiley So was my dad. He heard the lyric wrong for over 40 years. We got into a rather nasty argument over that song.  Grin

I made that quote part of my sig
It's funny I remember in 1990 seeing it and saying to my mom that they probably put in the word Buckwheat because that can't swear on ABC (especally in 1990). She thought for a second and said Mike's a big enough dork to really say that. I like Mike but I couldn't help but laugh at what she said.
Your mom sounds fun.  Grin

Who wrote that article, an old women in her 80's? She was complaining that the concert went past 9:30. There have been times where I've gone to a concert and not gotten home until 3:00 AM.
5661  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bad Review of Brian Show on: November 02, 2009, 08:24:45 PM
No offence, but I really don't see the big deal. God forbid a musician would ever get a less than perfect review. Brian's a big boy. He can probably handle it. This place is starting to look a little blue.

Correct lyric is...

"And does the yoga asanas too".

... and no, I have no idea what it means.  Grin

Asana (Sanskrit आसन ("Asanam"-आसनम् or आसनंis the correct Sanskrit-संस्कृतम् word, "आसन" is because of the influence of other languages like English and Hindi.)sitting down < आस to sit down[1]) is a body position, typically associated with the practice of Yoga, intended primarily to restore and maintain a practitioner's well-being, improve the body's flexibility and vitality, and promote the ability to remain in seated meditation for extended periods.[2] These are widely known as Yoga postures or Yoga positions, which is currently practiced for exercise and as alternate medicine.

The real question of this thread is, who in the world of the beach boys would have that kind of knowledge to just casually throw into a song?

Well, Al and Mike in particular were studying TM and proably yoga along with it.
True. I just saw the words Sanskrit and Hindi and thought, "WTF?".

The cocaine sessions scene is actually probably more accurate than we think. Or would like to admit. The best part of that movie wasn't even in the above post:

Last semi-widely "heard" song, in any case. Last recorded one was Lucy Jones, if I'm not mistaken.

Nah - "Lucy Jones" is primo 'shouty' Brian.

Odd, considering  it was recorded at same session as California Feeling. As I never have actually heard the song, I can't vouch, but those who have heard it have said that it was shouty but not raspy like it got later.

I'm about 99.9% certain that "Back home" was the first recording with his raspy vocals.
This might be hard to do, but can we define "shouty" and "raspy"? What is the exact difference between the two?
5666  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Murry's eight page letter on: November 01, 2009, 09:07:53 PM
Thanks for clearing that up for me. Is that the same Korthoff mentioned in Be Here In The Morning? "No calls for Korthoff, Parks or Grillo".
5667  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Murry's eight page letter on: November 01, 2009, 07:56:05 PM
I'm slightly confused. Who is the Carl that Murry talks about in the first few sentences? I assume it's  not Brian's brother, but an older relative? I'm not very knowledgeable on the extended Wilson family.

What am I listening to right now? The voices in my head.  Brian's Trip
5671  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Child Of Winter on: October 31, 2009, 08:31:19 PM
This just might be the last song where Brian has his old voice. He puts on that weird funny voice, but if you listen carefully you can hear the "vintage quality" in his voice. Did that make any sense? It's only on certain words, but it's there.
5672  Smiley Smile Stuff / The Beach Boys Media / Re: The Official BB You Tube Thread on: October 31, 2009, 08:22:33 PM
The best part of that footage doesn't seem to be included in the above broadcast. It's a clip of Al and Brian at a soundcheck. It goes something like this:

Brian: I'm tellin' ya Al, I think this show could really go....really be a good show

Al: You really think so?

Brian: Yeah. We're just that good.

And with that, Al laughs his head off.  Grin
5673  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If Still Cruisin' and SIP had never existed on: October 31, 2009, 08:08:41 PM
Actually, as far as the time line goes, Sweet Insanity goes with Still Cruisin' more than BW88 does.
Still Cruisin' was released in 1989, wasn't it? I thought Sweet Insanity didn't happen untill around 1991?
5674  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If Still Cruisin' and SIP had never existed on: October 31, 2009, 08:06:07 PM
I wasn't really including solo Brian songs, but it would have been interesting to hear a Beach Boys version of "Meet Me In My Dreams Tonight". For some reason, I think that Mike could have done a really good vocal on "Love and Mercy". Kind of like an updated version of Meant For You. Also, an honourable mention(for me, at least) would be Lady Liberty.
5675  Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: If Still Cruisin' and SIP had never existed on: October 30, 2009, 07:40:11 PM
Here's my revised list:

 1. Remember (Walking In The Sand)

 2. Lahaina Aloha

 3. Still Cruisin'

 4. Still Surfin'

 5. Island Girl

 6. Somewhere Near Japan

 7. Strange Things Happen

 8. Slow Summer Dancin' (One Summer Night)

 9. Hot Fun In The Summertime(with a better production. Whether you like to admit it or not, this song is fun. Plain and simple)*

10. Rock And Roll To The Rescue

11. Kokomo

12. Summer In Paradise(with a special accapella(sp?) ending, that would gradually fade out in a big mountain of the vocals that made The Beach Boys what they were, and still would have been had they tried just a little bit harder)*
