Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Brian & Al - We Are The World 25 For Haiti

I'm sure this has been discussed at some point somewhere on this board, but what are people's opinions on it? youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Glny4jSciVI&feature=relatedTBH, I dont really like MJ, he had a few great tracks but all the MJmania/hysteria displayed after his death was pretty sad really (does a mentally unstable pedophile deserve all that praise? he hadnt been seen in public for like 15 yrs anyway - anyway I feel sorry for him too. he had a tough childhood) I felt the song and most of its cast were sub-par. Justin Bieber and Hannah Montana are simply not the right people to record a song with a message. What was the reason for Brian and Al being in it? I suppose they wanted to lend support, but they are the only white people there really. All the rest are 'contemporary RnB' trash artists and gangsta rap / hip hop artists (they even have a weird rap segment in the song) Lastly I dont believe in the concept that if you watch a film on youtube you save the world (example: Kony 2012), but as Mike Love put it 'well I guess I'm just a sentimental sap'....

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / HARDTALK - The Beach Boys in 1977
|

I feel with all this gladtalk of the boys on this board recently that it was time for some discussion of what happened in 1977 with the Beach Boys! Why did everything go to sh*t that year? What caused Adult/Child and Bambu to be halted almost simultaneously? I know that it was Brian who stopped working, and Dennis much the same. I know there was a huge fight around this time and Dennis hated Mike afterwards when MIU came out instead of A/C Also there is lots of arguing between them all in this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JjiGnd-hk4&feature=relatedAt this time Carl appeared drunk on-stage at several concerts in Australia and they had to apologise publicly. Was it because no one knew in what direction the group should head, or were they all split? were they all pissed at Brian, or Mike?

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Was it their band name that killed them off in terms of popularity?
|

I was wondering.
Whenever I talk about the Beach Boys, or anyone else talks about them, for me as a fan I dont think about Surfin USA or I Get Around. I think PS/Smile, early 70's liveshows, Love You, and a very beardy Carl, Dennis, Mike, Brian and Al.
But in 1967 with no new music for the summer of love and shelving of Smile, would it not have been a good idea to change name along with their changing music?
Just to make it clear: I LOVE THE FACT THAT THEY DIDNT, THAT THEY KEPT TRUE TO THEIR ROOTS AND DIDNT SELL OUT (well, mike kinda did right?))
What are people's opinions on this? If they changed their name in 67-68, they could reinvent themselves from scratch without Brian. I mean by 1968 they were selling so bad that they might as well just ditched the band name without too much commercial impact.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Has the original 'Beach Boys In Concert LP' setlist been bootlegged?
|
on: March 07, 2012, 02:56:06 AM

I was just reading on Wikipedia that there was an earlier, much shorter version of the In Concert LP with completely different tracklist: Side 1 "Wouldn't It Be Nice" "Leaving This Town" "Heroes and Villains" "Marcella" "You Need a Mess of Help To Stand Alone" <------ Side 2 "Let the Wind Blow" "Do It Again" "Wild Honey" <------- "Fun Fun Fun" "Jumpin' Jack Flash" The version of "Heroes and Villains" from this album was later released on the Endless Harmony Soundtrack CD. THE QUESTION: HAS THIS BEEN BOOTLEGGED? Would be great to hear these songs in In Concert quality!

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What went wrong after Holland?
|

Two important events happened: - Endless Summer - Brian Wilson's return By 1973-74 The Beach Boys were becoming hip again, their live performances at universities shows how popular they were with young audiences and as a result Holland and In Concert charted very high, though not as they used to in 63-66. The clear mistake was that they let Mike's brother (or cousin?) have some important role, and Blondie fell out with it so Blondie and Ricky disappeared. However this didn't mean the end. Endless Summer gave them their popularity back, but not the one they were seeking. It was at this point Carl made the mistake of not extrapolating on Holland and instead let Brian back into the band. Brian was in a bad state by 1974 and he'd lost all contact with what music was 'hip', he was mainly into oldies and as such should never have been given a leading role in the group. By letting Brian back in, it counter-weighed Carl and Dennis, and led to the return of Mike Love. They should've kept Brian's involvement at a minimum and kept producing rock records. Dennis and Carl would've certainly been able to create decent enough material. But I still dig Love You / AdultChild so w/e-----

Friends as it should've been released in 1968:
SIDE ONE: Meant For You Friends I Went To Sleep Little Bird When A Man Needs A Woman Diamond Head
SIDE TWO: Wake The World Busy Doin Nothing Break Away (demo if available?) We're Together Again Time To Get Alone
Be with me and TNFP were recorded to late.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What studio album is the third pillar?

U2 matters not...
the answer is Love You.
I second both of those! Many will perhaps argue Sunflower. But Love You is certainly the final pillar. "Brian Wilson is The Beach Boys" - Dennis Pet Sounds - The greatest emotional album Smile - The greatest concept album Love You - The greatest personality album featuring Brian (It's Brian in a nutshell)

I'm preparing for a greatest hits set without a whole lot of surprises, and I would be fine with that.
It would be really great if they'd throw in a handful of lesser known late 60s/early 70s album tracks, though.
what only late 60's - early 70's? how about the do Airplane, It's OK, Had To Phone Ya, or even The Night Was So Young?

My God, he sounds just like Brian. Let's get this guy to record missing SMiLE lead vocals (DYLW definately comes to mind)!
I also thought of that! DYLW, LTSD, CIFOTM, Even a cleaner run of H&V version (original single) with the 'free-score five'
