Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Strawberry Fields Forever Made Brian Realize The Beatles Won :/

In total his statements do not make sense. Strawberry Fields Forever was released at the time when his focus was only on H&V, the time he recorded all the fragments. After hearing SFF he dropped H&V and focused on Vega-tables of whcih he didnt manage to produce a single. He then moved on directionless at recording Love to say Dada, which was a song he made based on a H&V fragment from Jan-Feb sometime ( you can hear it on TSS). That was his last attempt at recording anything for the album. Pressure is mounting, but because he fears failure he deliberatly pieces together a low-quality short edit of H&V and even overdubs a simple organ track to some sections so they appear less produced. He then releases it and then I dont understand why he expected it to fare well in that state. A real H&V version would reach top 5. When H&V failed and capitol added pressure they recorded Smiley.
In total this doesnt make any sense from a creative point of view. Smile was doomed by jan 1967 when he couldnt assemble a working H&V. so sad it ended that way, but I dig Smile Smile so whatever really.... ^^

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: What BB Song(s) You Disliked/Hated At 1st But After A While Grew To Like/Love?

For some time ago I never realised why many BB fans liked Love You, I couldnt stand Mona, Johnny Carson, and many more. Now its my favourite post-Smile album, or maybe i prefer Smiley Smile more.... hated then liked: You're So Good To Me I Can Hear Music Most of 'Friends' ( I still think they coulda made a better cut, included 'went to sleep' 'we're together again' etc....) All I Want To Do California Saga (Still prefer the Landlocked version of Big Sur) Just Once In My Life Had To Phone Ya I still hate most of 15 Big Ones and everything post-Love You, any reason why I shouldn't? I guess Keepin The Summer Alive is a good song.

In my opinion 'Love You' is the closest thing you get to the uniform sound and lyrical content of Pet Sounds, but Brian wasn't going to create something as good as PS again even if hadn't lost out to drugs. 'Love You' sounds ver different, and is more childing and shallow, but it is beautiful, it has to grow on one i guess.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Smile Sessions vs. Smiley Smile

Cool topic! The smiley smile sessions are available on the Unsurpassed Masters boots, very cool to hear how they built up Smiley Smile, I reckon that the tag to windchimes on SS is much better than the Smile version. But then again I do not treat SS as a downtuned diluted version of Smile but something completely independent of it, not worse just different. Smiley Smile is truly a great album and one of their top 5 albums. never before or since has band broken so completly from their original sound. I admire them for it. But one must wonder why they didnt to like The Who did with the Lifehouse sessions and turned it into the 'Who's Next' album. This could also have been done in 1967 with smile, they coulda used the smile sessions as they wanted and filled the gaps without brian's input and still have had a great album with which to compete with The Beatles, it would prob gone top 5 US and nr 1 in UK and many other places. But it would never have been Brian and Van Dyke's Smile.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Live shows 1970-1975 with GOOD QUALITY??
|
on: December 22, 2011, 10:36:30 AM

I am new to this forum but I would really like to hear some of their live shows from that period which is is so acclaimed, I have heard Beach Boys In Concert, and the Live In Carnegie Hall, but apart from that I only find very, very low quality cuts, the Live in Princeton cut is about as good as it gets... Any suggestions or links? Thank you all very much!

My top ten ( no specific order, other than chronological)
You Still Believe In Me - that basic repeating 3-chord progression (that bass!), the longing loving lyrics and they way Brian sings them. God Only Knows - a number of reasons make this perhaps the best modern music piece.
I Just Wasn't Made For These Times - the very first indie song, I'm 20 yrs old and the youthful anxiety that Brian sings of connects with very many young people. Heroes And Villains - The most dramatic of the smile songs and wonderful arrangements, vocals, and the most creative theme of music of all time, so many sections!
Surf's Up - The first Beach Boys song I ever heard, prob at age 13-14 and the one I cherish the most, if only this was the Beach Boys song ppl heard first! VDP at his best lyrically. Cool Cool Water - any verion of this is great, but the Smile era version with its repetitivness, the bass and the twangy single guitar notes and the organ, just perfect.
Child Is The Father Of The Man - This song I love for the dazling vocals in the chorus, the drumming in the chorus, the booming fizzling bass of Carol, the most mysterious smile track (never before released) All I Wanna Do - this song is very similar to IJWMFTT (above) in the sense that it is modern sounding, very indie, and very heartful lyrics and vocals by Mike!
A Day In The Life Of A Tree - INDIE, so many groups have tried and failed to capture the mood of this song, how could anyone? Til' I Die - Perhaps being next to ADITLOAT (above) on the album makes it even deeper, wow that album is so dark! but so beautiful!

stereo Wild Honey anyone?
I want to hear the WH sound better, is there a stereo Wild Honey boot anywhere? I managed to get a stereo Smiley Smile awhile ago, and its absolutly dazling! completely epic and does as much credit to Smiley Smile as the stereo remaster of Pet Sounds did to that album.
I know there is a stereo Let the wind blow, and I recall hearing a stereo Country Air on youtube a year or two ago.
