Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: UK Tour Dates.........When?

On QVC Mike made a comment about how well the the new single TWGMTR is charting in England. Did anyone hear that? He didn't have to mention that.
I think U.K. dates will be added. How about a second leg of the tour? I don't think the BBs will forget you guys. Too much history with all the support given in the late 1960's and beyond.
If not for the popularity in the UK from 1966-1974 the band would've disbanded. That I am certain of. There would not have been enough sales to keep them in the business. At least they wouldn't continued using the Beach Boys name.

My view.
Think About the Days - 8 (a very pleasant short wordless hymn. I expect it will be one of the better tracks after hearing it followed by the horrific 'Spring Vacation')
Spring Vacation - 3 (dreadful, pointless, bad production, bad lyrics with disgusting references to old classics - just worse than 'Brian's Back' because unlike that song this one isn't catchy, it isn't deep, there is no redeeming vocal part by Carl. I almost vomited when I heard this because I was expecting another TWGMTR. My bad I guess. Also the title reminds me of a very bad shark film which shares the title. It starts promising then dies horribly.)
That's Why God Made The Radio - 8 (this is a very good song. It is not cheesy enough to call it a cheese slice and although the production is NOT very Brian Wilson nor PS or Sunflower in any regards it is well done.)

no joke, it always seemed to me to be about a low-level street gang.
"my buddies and me are getting real well known, the bad guys know us and they leave us alone", you know?
back in the days the idea of making car songs had to adress the culture surrounding good cars. imagine what 'Grease' set out to portray, then put it in LA and you have what IGA is about.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Help Me Rhonda (alternate) from Endless Harmony Soundtrack in stereo?
|

To Capitol: Please release stereo version of "Help Me Rhonda (alternate)" from Endless Harmony Soundtrack on upcoming box release!! This song is so good, but that added falsetto just makes it for me. With that falsetto by Brian it easily becomes my favourite pre-PS song. A stereo release of (perhaps all three versions?) of this song would be highly cherished by the fan community and also be very accessible to the casual consumer. Do others agree?

I listened to the album and felt it was disposable garbage. There was no soul or heart into any of the songs. Picking such well known songs and making them good was a daunting task from the beginning but the execution of the album is sub par in every aspect. It was terrible. I will never listen to it again nor advise anyone to give it a listen.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / The Sandbox / Re: Bruce, do yourself and all of us a favor and don't make political statements.

The Beach Boys have never been about politics, so political rant should be left out of conversation with fans or public setting.
This contrasts them to the likes of John Lennon who was a very outspoken person of strong opinions from the very beginning (as a European I find the public burning of albums in the southern states after the 'more popular than Jesus' comment to be utterly hilarious and an indicator of the general mood of the US).
Point is if someone as a public figure has shown his political ideology and support(or lack of) to a political figure then it is more acceptable to the fans. No one would bash Lennon if he were alive today and said the Republican party has become a disaster (which he ofc would do, who are we kidding).
But Beach Boys should stay out of this. I personally have no spiritual affiliation or religious conviction, but I still think its great when Brian talks about the spirituality of music! I love the new song 'TWGMTR' even though to my rational mind the song makes no sense whatsoever, but I understand what it wishes to say, and I find it beautiful.

I think it's definately better than those you mentioned, but it just has so many strange, head scratching moments that it's hard for me not to skip a bunch of tracks while I listen to it. Part of it, though, was a 'victim of the time'... a lot of songs/albums from that time period are strange and head scratching by any artist.
For instance, why do a cover of "Rock & Roll Music" if you don't have anything good to add to it, since it's already been done perfectly by Chuck Berry, and then amazingly, later improved upon by John Lennon. There was no way to cover that song and have it be even decent compared to Chuck's or the Beatles version, but yet THEY STILL TRIED IT.
The single version was better than the album version, you can really heard that moog. Dennis or Carl should've sung it, not Mike. They came close to pulling it off.

I'm sure fans on fan sites for other bands don't spend there entire time talking about what they don't like about the bands in question... How about we start a thread: 'Why the Beach Boys are the greatest band of all-time and one of the most inventive, imaginative and exciting mainstream bands of all time'?
Fans of other groups are very quick to glorify ANYTHING that group ever did. That's why they hail them as 'Gods' of rock, which is imo total bullsh*t. This board is very down to earth, it seems most people here are very open to making jokes and criticising this group. Tearing it apart and disecting the groups history and their individual personalities (which from the bands persepctive must be quite interesting/scary). I think the atmosphere of this board is superb and dynamic, people have lots of different opinions on this very creative group which is as brilliant musically as it is brilliantly flawed by the people in it. Great show to watch.

The Night Was So Young - the least favorite Love You track. Roughly speaking, I don't like Carl's voice (esp. in the chorus), annoying guitar twangs, etc. Harmonies are the only embellishment in this almost unlistenable tune.
But the arrangement of this is so good. That moog has never been better used than in these songs and TNWSY is not an exception! Carl was trying to sound like Dennis I think. Because for a long time I thought it was Dennis singing it, and then it sounded fine. The lyrics are very typical Brian of this period but it without doubt a very well made song surely?

IJWMFTT - yes he was, made the best 60's record. Brian woulda been a fine hipster in these days, but better back then. Wouldnt It Be Nice - generally not, most likely not. That's Not Me - so you claim dude. You Still Believe In Me - Tell me how the f*ck you know that Brian?
