When Girls Get Together is a good song imo. People seem to bash it around but the instrumentation is very lush with balkan guitars and mandolins, timpani etc. It does kinda throw you into some European setting rather than LA. Perhaps they were very much into France at the time? (given the french lyrics on At My Window and Mountain Of Love) The lyrics I would say are not a downer either as they are very philisophical and are in fact relevant though a few lines are more dubious. The complexity of relations and viewpoints between the sexes have baffled people since 'prehistory' I know of few other songs that tackle it so magestically, I cannot even imagine how one could write a good song about such an issue. Well done again Brian(?)!!!

To put it this way, it is more believable than what Mike Love said in the Smile mini-episodes last November. That they (the group) were all astonished by the work. I think Dennis was the only one to support Brian back then, but he was not considered a worthy musician by the others as he had not written significant material yet, therefore his opinion was of no value. I think Bruce and Al were probably more on Mike Love's side, and ML obviously didnt like it. Brian has said so, why would he lie about it?
The text harshly criticises Marilyn and says that Brian had no love for her. I know about the part that he tried Marilyns sister but I always had the impression that they were affection towards each other.
Personally I do not hold this against ML 45 years after it happened, one has to move on. I bear a greater grudge against him for what happened with their hip credentials in the 70's and for making Brian do MIU. SIP is unforgivable but then again I don't really consider that a Beach Boys album. I give credit to him for doing these shows with Brian and the rest after all these years and problems.

That's one powerful article right there. Very well written and with insight only an informed fan/Smiley Smiler could have. I never knew that Brian had the idea of changing their name to 'Beach', always thought it was a Carl or Dennis suggestion. Wonder what woulda happened if they had done so. Didn't harm them in the early 70's keeping their name, but ES and 15BO destroyed all that, then came the rediculous KTSA album cover which damaged their image beyond repair....

I've noticed many artists had stereo albums with mono single mixes, so I guess there was a middle way. Rolling Stones are good example. After Smiley Smile failed I cannot imagine why they would think WH would do any better. In many way's it was as radical as SS given that it was a white band doing a soul album including a Stevie Wonder cover. One cannot even begin to attach this album to their surf image

Had a great time last night! The only downside was this woman who sat close to me telling me to sit down all the time. I got up when This Whole World started and she told me to sit down. She wasn't even behind me so I wasn't blocking her view. When a lot of people got up to dance she was ok with that, but if it was just me and my cousin she would get rude. I'm sorry but just like its her choice to sit down the whole show its my choice if I want to dance or whatever.
I hate when these stupid women do this. It has happened to me on a few occasions. When I saw Australian Pink Floyd a few years ago my dad and I were'nt even standing just doing the beat with out knees for Run Like Hell and this stupid woman told us to sit still. My dad started laughing in her face and asked her to get real. Funny part was she brought her camera up when a bunch of kids came to sing Another Brick In The Wall - II so she was obviously a mother who didnt care at all for the music. WOMEN GTFO!

Come to think of it, it is pretty amazing that they excluded Cool Water, The Letter, Cant' Wait Too Long and Lonely Days while choosing to keep Mama Says and How She Boogalooed It.
And why on Earth did Brian do this one in mono? I fail to see the reason when mono was made essentially for it to sound better from radios and loud speakers. But everyone knew Wild Honey was never gonna get radio airplay or be a huge commerical success. + by 1967 hardly any artists did stuff in mono. This album needs a stereo remix!

Was there not an attempt to makes some sort of Beatles-Next Generation as well? I think the world is cruel to assume the kids of all time great songwriters MUST make some career in music. Many of them are surely great musicians with very good voices, but it is the songwriting that is key, and I believe that it is statistically impossible for children to become proficient songwriters like their parents, especially if those parents are Beatles or Beach Boys. However it will certainly be interesting to hear them. When the remaining Beach Boys snuff it ( This assumption is false as Brian Wilson must be the toughest creature alive along with Keith Richards and would probably survive a nuclear fallout. ) the kids might be the only way to hear these great tunes in any live setting.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Could someone brush up The Beach Boys on Wikipedia?

Much of their history is very well covered, but there are large gaps. Very little is said about the 1972-80 period. Only small articles for Love You and 15BO. There should perhaps be an article about Adult Child? Dennis' POB and Bambu could also get updated again. I'm just putting it out. I do some modifications here and there very seldom and might add some additional info I pick up from the board. However I know there are some true experts on this board so I was wondering if someone would want to share that knowledge to the world through the extremely accessible site Wikipedia is. On behalf of many thank you!

I guess it'll be something like this, maybe with "Marcella" and "All summer long" added:
Do It Again Catch a Wave Don't back Down Surfin safari Surfer Girl Then I Kissed Her You're So Good To Me Why Do Fools Fall in Love When I grow up to be a man Cottonfields Be True to Your School Don't Worry Baby Little Deuce Coupe 409 Shut Down I get around Sloop John B Wouldnt It Be Nice Sail On Sailor Heroes and Villains God Only Knows That's Why God Made the Radio California Girls Help Me Rhonda Barbara Ann Surfin' USA Kokomo Good Vibrations Fun Fun Fun
(setlist from the Jazz Fest)
This is my greatest fear. They must never drop Add Some Music, I Just Wasnt Made For These Times and All This Is That, it would be utter disaster. The way I see them pleasing the crowd with not too far a deviation from current set: Do It Again Catch a Wave Don't back Down Surfer Girl All Summer Long Then I Kissed Her You're So Good To Me Why Do Fools Fall in Love When I grow up to be a man Cottonfields Don't Worry Baby Please Let Me Wonder I get around Add Some Music To Your Day Marcella Sloop John B All This Is That Wouldnt It Be Nice I Just Wasnt Made For These Times Sail On Sailor Heroes and Villains God Only Knows Surf's Up That's Why God Made the Radio California Girls Help Me Rhonda Surfin' USA Kokomo Good Vibrations Fun Fun Fun (They could also add something nice like "On My Way To Sunny California" or "Cool Cool Water" or "Darlin"(darian on lead) or another cut from PS or even Wild Honey/Friends/Love You). Dream scenario is "All You Wanna Do". They should ONLY do Barbara Ann if the crowd is loving the earlier work and if Mike does his Papa Oom Mow Mow part (the songs redeeming line!).

Aerosmith is great! The songwriting, production/arrangement and performance on songs like are Crazy, Crying and Living on the Edge is really good.
I don't like those songs at all and cite them as my reason for not liking that group. I really can't stand Steve Tyler. Aerosmith really are the kings of Cheese rock. I don't really like glamrock in general but the idea of taking this macho hardrock and then coating the song in sentimental sugar really disgusts me. I can enjoy a few songs here and there but at heart I know they are all pretty dismal....

A lot of people here seem to be pretending that they have never hollered along to Livin' On A Prayer or Bad Medicine when roaring drunk... Jon Bon Jovi? More like Livin' On A Prayer is numero 1 reason I dislike Bon Jovi. I don't like their hard rock but yet sentimental lyrics and style, its like Aerosmith... (*shivers whilst typing*) Thats the problem: beer music is shait....

I think they should change their set list for this Festival. The crowd is young, many hipsters, many hipsters like PS and afterwards, so the setlists should be mostly PS, Smile, Sunflower, Holland and Love You. Ofc there should be a good 10 song selection of earlier songs, but this crowd does not want to hear 6 car songs in a row.
Fingers crossed for a progressive setlist which is more like that of the early-mid 70's!

I think the closest we will ever get to an original fade for SU is by listening to the live versions of the early 70's. The snare drum and the horns which have long drawn notes is possibly the way it would've ended? I think Brian did not have in mind to add more instruments to the fade given there is such a strong vocal blend. He would not want that to be overshadowed.
