Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Question about 'Brian Falls Into A Piano'

In roughly 45 minutes or so of continuous tape, there is no "Danny" and his voice is nowhere to be found among those talking and participating in this session. And that's beyond what made it to the Sessions box set. I believe as has been said it was a send-up of Danny's song that was a joke. If Danny were there, my bet is on the fact we'd at least hear him engage in the proceedings, or even be called out if he's in the booth. He was not.
Thanks for that well-informed and, I think, definitive answer.

Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks, Michael Vosse, David Anderle, and Bob Gordan (or Gordon) are the voices on that and the other skits.
Can anyone point me to where Danny Hutton is either heard or mentioned on those tapes? All of the guys listed above are called out by name or are so recognizable during the session, but I don't recall hearing anyone say "Danny" and he wasn't one of the voices actively participating. Yet I've seen it reported that Danny was there...maybe in the booth? Anyway, if someone can point to where Danny is clearly heard or referenced, please fill us in.
At 1:18 on the Smile Sessions edit Brian says (in a surprised voice) "Danny, what's happening? Where'd Danny come from? He just suddenly showed up." But if Cam Mott's suggestion that the person singing "What a thing to happen" is VDP mock-singing a Danny Hutton song, then it would make sense that Brian is jokingly pretending to be fooled into thinking that Danny Hutton is really there.

I really appreciate Let Us Go On This Way. That one's cool. The Night Was Young is good too. The album just has a lot of really bad vocals, which should be their main selling point. The synthesizer sounds are primitive and behind the curve for the time. I do like the album mostly, but it's a mere reflection of former glory, not any return to form. It does sound good in comparison to everything that followed, I'll give you that, 'cuz it's a Brian album y'know?.

Fantastic as always! I'm looking forward to your slideshow of "Surf's Up" whenever you get there!
Thanks. "Surf's Up" is all that's left to complete my project and I hope it will be a fitting finale. I'm thinking November 4th will be a good day to upload it.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Holland - end of an era?

I would say Holland is the end of the era where they were trying (trying too hard maybe?), boosted by their then current management, to be cool. For me, Surf's Up was really the last truly solid record. Carl and the Passions is wildly inconsistent and I'm not a big Dennis booster so his contributions don't add much for me. Holland is somewhat better, but nowhere close to great. I appreciate Holland more in retrospect, but for decades the only two songs I really gave a hang about were 'Sail On Sailor' and 'Funky Pretty'. I do like 'Trader' these days. Different opinions right? Please no hard feelings to those that think those two albums are the bees knees.

Side A 1. Surf's Up 2. Look 3. Fall Breaks and Back to Winter 4. Vege-Tables 5. She Gives Speeches 6. She's Goin Bald
Side B 7. just the chorus of Cabin Essence repeated four times 8. Heroes and Villains (15 minute version) 9. Surf's Up 10. The Elements (Earth = Wonderful, Water = Surf's Up, Wind = Barnyard, Fire = Wind Chimes) 11. Sloop John B 12. Our Prayer
That's thinking outside the box.

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Bicycle sounds in You Still Believe In Me live

Don't you think they would have been taken out of the song in the first place if Brian didn't want them there? Honestly I've never thought about it. I've heard that song so many times, I've never even thought to question it. I guess it adds some whimsy to an otherwise sad song. Perhaps to Brian, the bicycle noises are just other instruments and not necessarily representative of anything in the lyrics.
I don't see it as a sad song. Now, It would be sad if the girl DIDN'T still believe in him. As for the horn sound left in for the live performance, I think it's just a bit of fun even though it doesn't really fit with the lyrics. It's expected after 50 years.

I know we've had threads like this before, but I'll play along. After a lot of years I've gotten to a place where I am satisfied with my sequencing. Until something new is unearthed (I believe in my heart there is more to come) I feel like this is Smile for me (all stereo). It mostly follows the order of the December '66 Capitol memo. Side 1 (Prayer) 1)Worms (with insert of Holidays a la BWPS' On A Holiday) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWCh80PqEesgoes right into 2)H&V (a 5:46 Cantina version) (George Fell Into His French Horn) 3)Surf's Up (without CIFOTM ending) 4)Good Vibrations (a 5:28 extended version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ef0H1Tl7Js 5)Cabin Essence Side 2 (He Gives Speeches) 1)Wonderful goes right into 2)CIFOTM comprised of Look(seltaeb's edit with vocals)/CIFOTM 3)Wind Chimes (with Whispering Winds fade) 4)The Elements comprised of LTSD Second Day-Air/Mrs, O'Leary-Fire (no H&V intro)/LTSD-Water (no chant)/IWBA & Workshop- Earth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JYwBNIPRAQ (Brian Falls Into A Piano) 5)Vega-Tables (H&V Reprise) 6)IIGS comprised of IIGS/Barnyard/IIGS/Do A Lot (with whistling)/IIGS/With Me Tonight goes right into 7)The Old Master Painter comprised of TOMP/YWMS /My Children Were Raised/Barnshine It runs about 57 minutes.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / The new Explorers Club album 'Together' is out!
|

Here’s some good news if you loved The Explorers Club’s first album ‘Freedom Wind’, but were less enthralled by their more varied 60s/70s Pop-spectrum sophomore album ‘Grand Hotel’. The Explorers Club’s new album ‘Together’ for the most part remains firmly entrenched in the Beach Boys’ sound. It’s unquestionably an album made by Beach Boys fans for Beach Boys fans. The album takes a turn half-way through, welding the beautiful melodies and harmonies of the BBs’ classic 60s sound to their 70s ‘BBs Love You’ aesthetics but never strays too far from homage. Here I go track-by track:
Together- EC’s take on Wild Honey complete with wailing synth line begins deceptively before kicking in with the pounding drums for the chorus. Wah wah guitars add some funk with a Carl-esque soulful vocal finish. 5/5
California Callin’- Recalls Good Timin’ which is a good thing indeed. Completely relaxed feel like a lazy afternoon. 5/5
Once In A While- This cuts departs Beach Boys territory a bit with a dreamy echo-y chorus that is more Curt Boetcher than Brian Wilson. Still, this is fantastic Sunshine Pop. 5/5
Be Around- Who wants a ‘Friends’ homage waltz that even throws in the original’s modulations and trademark bass harmonica? I do! Ido! Beautiful. 5/5
Gold Winds- This is slice of 70s California soft rock with a hint of Country, though still replete with plenty of obvious BBs influence. It’s not much of a stretch to imagine the Eagles recording this. 4/5
Perfect Day- This is a perfectly lovely Four Freshmen style vocal piece that is unfortunately presented in mono, and disrupts the album’s carefully-crafted aesthetic and flow. It should have been stuck at the end of the album. 4/5
Quietly- This is where the album takes a sudden left turn into to ‘BBs Love You’ land with synthesizers starting to hold up the arrangements. If ‘Hushabye’ were recorded in 1976 it might sound something like this. EC may be fascinated by 70’s era BBs music, but on this album they always still manage to include the innocence and beauty of their earlier era. 5/5
My Friend- The ‘Love You’ style continues. Though I hear some some decidedly un-Wilson like chords, if I had any doubts that we are still in ‘Love You’ territory, the unexpected stomp of the ‘Ding-Dang’-ish coda dispels any doubts.
No Strings Attached- If, in the mid-70s, Brian Wilson sat down to write a song, and thought that he would try to emulate brother Dennis’ ‘Forever’ it might have come out something like this. Unashamedly romantic sap. 4/5
Don’t Waste Her Time- This is Wilson welded onto Burt Bacharach. The arrangement is distinctly BW synth-based, but the song would have probably been more at home on the last EC album (maybe not surprising since this track dates back a few years). Still, it’s fantastic. 5/5
Before I’m Gone- Ahhh! They saved the best for last. This homage to ‘Til I Die’ (even the title tips this off) finds the synth sounds of the previous several tracks kicked to the curb for a lovely album-closing sunburst finish. With beautiful vocals to die for, the song resolves with repetitive intertwining harmony lines much like the BBs classic. 6/5
So ‘Together’ is an excellent album that could have used a better mix to punch things up. Though it’s mostly lacking in direct impact, it’s an album for relaxing to on hot summer afternoons. Let it’s laid-back vibe wash over you.
