Why is How She Boogalooed It only stereo for the first part? "No extraction mixes (a la 'Help Me, Rhonda'). The one standout that comes to mind is that in 'How She Boogalooed It' the instrumental portion couldn't be reconstructed in stereo, so for however many bars that organ solo is, it slides seamlessly into mono and back out into stereo. Seamless. Beautiful." Source: http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,25077.msg609256.html#msg609256Whoever is quoted there turned out to be wrong. The track never reverts back to stereo. Too bad they just didn't include an extraction mix if that was the only stereo option. It would have been better than nothing.

Disney Girls. Second-rate schmaltz, and not much of a melody either.
Well said! Smb. said really dumb thing in its defense - to paraphrase, it's objectively good song if it's covered by popular musicians (A. Garfunkel & C. Elliot). Can you believe that? Well anything would sound good sung by Art Garfunkel's golden throat. It's a cheesy song, but Garfunkel is the far superior singer and does a better job of selling it that Bruce ever could. But no, I don't agree that it's an "objectively good" song. It's pure corn.

New Bowie EP on iTunes today: No Plan, which includes Lazarus, the title track, and two other tunes. I believe they're from the musical.
On the indie side of life, a new Shins album is announced for a March release, with 2 tracks available already.
To observe Bowie's birthday, a video for the song 'No Plan' was also released today. I really like that song and wouldn't have minded a bit if they had decided to include it on Blackstar. I'm not that enthusiastic about the other two new ones. They were all included on the Lazarus cast album that came out in November. See the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIgdid8dsC8New Flaming Lips album 'Oczy Mlody' is due out on Friday the 13th.

Non Smiley Smile Stuff / General Music Discussion / Todd Rundgren collaboration 'Runddans' video

Time to take a break from Beach Boys videos now that my Smile project is done. I hope you'll check out my video for the Runddans song "Put Your Arms Around Me'. Runddans is the result of a collaboration between Todd Rundgren, Hans-Peter Lindstrøm and Emil Nikolaisen, and was released in 2015. For Todd Rundgren fans, it harkens back to his most progressive works of the 70s. I like this section of the album so much that I was messing around with trying to edit together a proper single-length song edit, and I came up with this. I was so happy with the result, I was inspired to create a slideshow video to go with it. The results can be heard and seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeiiVholXq8

Smiley Smile Stuff / General On Topic Discussions / Re: Did Van Dyke Parks write all of the lyrics on Smile?

Respectfully, this is where I miss most the old Smile Shop. I remember some stellar threads with in-depth analysis of the Smile lyrics. That was when nobody would have considered "Surf's Up" too obscure (it's called poetry, folks; when everybody can understand all of it at first read, it's usually called prose). It was brilliant stuff, and I wish I had saved it somewhere.
Sorry, and back on topic. My take is that in this case the credits are correct. For all songs where VDP's name appears, lyrics are typical of his style, stratified, rich in wordplay and cultural references (though I'm sure that Brian had significant input on the subject matter). For Wind Chimes, I agree with Sound of Free that lyrics are typically "Brian", emotional and to the point, with no wordplay but effective imagery. Brian is a much better lyricist than he gets credit for.
I think "Mahalo lu lei" (which, by the way, is not gibberish: it was actually translated) was a Brian/VDP collaboration.
I was recently taken to task about that lyric myself. It is clearly pronounced "wahala" and not "mahalo" on both BWPS and the 1966 sessions. As to any proper translation of either phrase, I challenge anyone to do it. I searched the internet and did not come with anything satisfying. I've read that Parks claims no responsibility for the Hawaiian chant at all. It really does just seem to be something that Brian thought sounded good. Interestingly, if you have a copy of the original BWPS London concerts, you can hear that they use the word "mahalo", but it was changed or corrupted in the recording process for the BWPS album. Apparently it was a case of "As we returned to the studio to record "Mahalo" or "Wahala", we always got them confused."
