Let's start fresh for the new year. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: donald on January 01, 2009, 11:12:59 AM OK. Listening to Dion...Bronx and Blue. A very, very, fine album. If it is possible, Dion's vocals are better than ever and there is an ownership of these blues phrasings that is just so natural it's uncanny.
highly recommended **** Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: phirnis on January 01, 2009, 11:23:12 AM Anthony Burr/Charles Curtis - Alvin Lucier

Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: TdHabib on January 01, 2009, 01:54:01 PM A few CDs I got for Christmas I thought I'd share:
A pretty terrific Richard Manuel solo live CD called Whispering Pines. He always reminded me a little bit of Dennis and I love this voice--even in it's smoky form on this 1985 concert. Oasis' semi-new album. Grand. U2's Zooropa. Pretty good even though I like their rocking side more than the European sound on this release. "Stay (Faraway So Close!)" rules. The Ramones It's Alive!. Fitting since it's a New Years Eve show. Love it, Joey was the best! Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: lance on January 02, 2009, 09:45:21 AM All the songs i have from 1967. I'm about halfway through.

He always reminded me a little bit of Dennis and I love this voice--even in it's smoky form on this 1985 concert. I have this one too, I even think it's the only officially released Richard Manuel CD. Great stuff. U2's Zooropa. Pretty good even though I like their rocking side more than the European sound on this release. "Stay (Faraway So Close!)" rules. This one and "Achtung Baby" are my two favourite U2 albums, their last two records bore me to death really. Agree about "Stay (Faraway So Close)", "The Wanderer" with Johnny Cash is also neat. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: lance on January 03, 2009, 07:06:30 AM Zooropa was their last good album...I say, though I haven't heard their last two, actually. Pop was so terrible I couldn't buy another one.

Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: smile-holland on January 11, 2009, 01:28:49 PM Eels' Electro-Shock Blues How coincidental! I did as well a few weeks back. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: the captain on January 11, 2009, 01:45:11 PM It's probably among my 25-50 favorite albums ever.
Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: smile-holland on January 12, 2009, 02:04:50 AM I always like Beautiful Freak a lot, liked the experimentation with the use of instruments and samples on some of the tracks. Which was the reason that I got hold of it's follow-up as well when it as released. Had to grow on me though. Still melancholy at times, but in a much more depressing way.
But give it a few turns, and once you've passed the first 3 tracks and still like it, you're a fan for life. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: the captain on January 12, 2009, 01:44:17 PM Beautiful Freak is actually probably my second-least favorite Eels album. I love Electro-Shock, Blinking Lights and Daisies. I like Souljacker. Then Beautiful Freak and Shootenanny. (The live stuff and rarities and MC Honky and Levity soundtrack under M.O. Everett I don't really count.)
But it's all really just one big album anyway. You really feel that when watching/listening to him live, or seeing the "Town Hall" stuff, for example. One big album. Have you got/heard his two solo albums, pre-Eels? Despite a few cool things, they largely suck. It's surprising how bad they are, considering how well they were reviewed and how cool his early arrangements can be. Astounding. But those lyrics! They make a Beach Boys fan shudder. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: SG7 on January 12, 2009, 05:38:11 PM Played Made in the USA and Jeffery Foskett's Cool and Gone album.

It's surprising how bad they are, considering how well they were reviewed and how cool his early arrangements can be. Astounding. But those lyrics! They make a Beach Boys fan shudder. I bought BF when I was in my alternative music-phase (mid-late 90ies). As I said, what got me was the sometimes weird instrumentation. I especially like the more melancholy tracks on that album. The title track, My Beloved Monster (gotta love that base-line, made me wonder at the time if there was a BW-connection), Manchild. For me it was the reason to buy E's follow-up as well. Did I know the guy had gone through some rough times? A world of difference, still somehow it feels like Electro Shock Blues continues where BF ends. When you listen to the closing track on BF, "Manchild", you still here an optimistic E, but that hope turns into desperation and total sadness when you hear the opening lines of "Elizabeth on the Bathroom Floor". Weird. Took a while to get used to ESB, could be the reason I didn't buy Daisies Of The Galaxy (although I've heard that one is much more optimistic, maybe I should get that one). Less accesible at first, but I appreciate it a lot more now. Don't know his pree-Eels work, so can't comment on that. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: Amy B. on January 25, 2009, 06:34:28 AM I've been listening to Queen lately for the first time in years. "You Take My Breath Away" has to be one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Freddie Mercury was an underrated songwriter, maybe because his abilities as a singer and performer overshadowed his other talents.
Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: the captain on January 25, 2009, 09:32:31 AM He was an amazing songwriter, Amy. Absolutely. And you know what else? A brilliant arranger, too, although by the '80s (according to his own interviews of the time) he got a little bit of latter-day Wilson in him, preferring to drop things that didn't happen quickly. I think the use of technology (which simplified things) coupled with his already enormous success (which made them unnecessary anyway) had a lot to do with that, though.
And me, I'm NOT listening to the Heartless Bastards up coming album because I can't find the blasted disc. Where did it go...? Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: Amy B. on January 25, 2009, 10:16:51 AM Are Youtube videos allowed on this section? Well, anyway:
This is a beautiful live rendition of You Take My Breath Away-- his vocal is probably better than on the recording: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJW0-XqlIQ4&feature=PlayList&p=586C851D566628DF&playnext=1&index=1 And then of course the recorded version has the gorgeous harmonies, all Freddie, I believe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zSzlT5zBXs&feature=related Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: the captain on January 25, 2009, 10:27:09 AM That's awesome, I've never seen this song live
For all the 80s era Queen video out there, I'd sure love to see some 70s stuff officially released. The clips from circa 75 on the Night at the Opera Classic Albums dvd are wonderful. But, he rarely adds anything about BW/BB's other works. I hear a lot of 1967-1972 BW/BB influence on Paul's solo stuff. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Paul sang really well on that album; a lot of diverse songs, too. One of favorite albums.
Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: the captain on February 26, 2009, 08:44:04 PM I like it a lot, too. In fact, it was the album that got me interested in solo McCartney. I was a big Beatles fan, but disliked all the solo stuff I had heard at that point. That turned me on and convinced me to give it (or take) a few chances. I still don't like the majority, but because of Flaming Pie, got things like Ram that I may not have otherwise.
Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: Sheriff John Stone on February 26, 2009, 08:53:56 PM For some reason, I've been reading Wikipedia entries lately; it does give you some interesting antecdotes.... Flaming Pie went to No. 2 on the album charts - kept out of No. 1 by the Spice Girls! Flaming Pie was also nominated for a Grammy as Album Of The Year - won by Bob Dylan's Time Out Of Mind.
Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: lance on February 27, 2009, 12:01:05 AM I love McCartney...very underrated and overshadowed by the Lennon myth, IMO. I almost think he is better post-Beatles.
I hear a lot of late sixties Beach Boys influence on him too...amoung tons of other influences. Bossanova by the Pixies. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: the captain on February 27, 2009, 08:07:30 PM I almost think he is better post-Beatles. No "almost" involved for me. While I think Plastic Ono Band and Imagine are the two best Beatle solo albums, it's Ram, George's All Things Must Pass, then a boatload of Paul before you'd get to another John album. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: lance on February 28, 2009, 07:46:00 AM Definitely. But I meant I like paul McCartney's stuff better in the seventies than his stuff in the sixties. It's a statement I'm not one hundred percent convinced of, but I really think that the Beatles breakup, in the end, liberated Paul in a lot of ways...a lot of positive ways. I don't think that any McCartney album approaches the best Beatles albums, however--because of the Beatles' magic blend.
Anyway. NO Depression, Uncle Tupelo. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: the captain on February 28, 2009, 08:08:31 AM Oh, I see. I can't say I'd agree with that, then: I prefer Paul's Beatle music to Paul's solo music, on the whole. But I really do think he's gotten a terribly unfair rap overall: he "just" writes catchy pop while Lennon tackled the big issues ... blahblah. I respect a good pop song more than a self-righteous grandstand.

Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: lance on February 28, 2009, 10:16:48 AM LOL
We like the same artists, but totally different songs and albums. But Off the Ground had some good moments. I'm gonna stand by it, McCartney, RAM, Band on the Run Red Rose Speedway, Venus and Mars and London Town are all very good albums. In my opinion, in sum, there are at least as many decent McCartney songs in the seventies as in the sixties and perhaps more. Critics can kill me, but I'm saying it boldly and unequivicably. He starts getting shaky in the eighties, but what sixties artist didn't? Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: the captain on February 28, 2009, 11:14:14 AM He starts getting shaky in the eighties, but what sixties artist didn't? Lou Reed, aside from Mistrial, was probably more consistent in the 80s than the 70s. But overall, no doubt, the 80s saw a lot of "classic" artists losing their way. It actually makes sense, with the entire recording process so wholly different than the one they came of age withy, not to mention the sudden dominance of visuals because of MTV. "Biker Like An Icon" is an example, to me anyway, why Paul McCartney (like Brian Wilson) is so great. Yeah, it's not the greatest song he ever wrote, but I can't get it out of my head. Probably one of the best vocal-performances of all time. The middle-eight (or what it's called) sung by, I believe, Phil has to stand almost next to Carl's GOK-vocal in it's beauty and clearness Title: Re: What are you listening to? OK, I'm gonna make one of those "this is the greatest" statements....I can't believe how great Paul's vocal is on this track, and so (relatively) late in his career. It gives me goosebumps when he sings, "I can't tell you how I feel". It's the "I can't" part; where does that come from? From his gut! His soul! When he sings it, you can't tell if he's 20, 30, 40, or 60; it's timeless.... I think it's in the all-time Top 5 Paul McCartney lead vocals. Agree or disagree? Which ones, in your opinion, can top it? Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: TdHabib on April 17, 2009, 05:29:46 PM Double post, sorry.
Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: TdHabib on April 17, 2009, 05:31:27 PM Paul McCartney's "Let Me Roll It" from Back In The U.S. Had a listen to it and it is indeed classic, the final "in the PALM of my HAND" is just great, but in all honesty I find Paul's vocals almost always great, he has a voice that honestly can rarely miss, only when he tries to overpower it every now and then. I dunno if these can top the "Let Me Roll It" live vocal, but two of my favorites that are just as good are "Maybe I'm Amazed" and a tune from 1982 called "Wanderlust," one of my all time favorites; also I know many people dislike Driving Rain but "Your Loving Flame" is a heck of a vocal for a later period. Also a favorite is the b-section "Well the rain exploded with a mighty crash" from "Band on the Run." But I don't wanna get carried away ;DOK, I'm gonna make one of those "this is the greatest" statements....I can't believe how great Paul's vocal is on this track, and so (relatively) late in his career. Post by: Sheriff John Stone on April 17, 2009, 07:10:41 PM TdHabib, you mentioned "Wanderlust", well, I think the entire Tug Of War album has great vocals; I like that album; takes me back to the great MTV years! And, it's interesting you mentioned "Your Loving Flame" because - it made my compilation!
Now, before I get hammered, this is not a "Greatest Hits" or a "Best Of" compilation. These are my FAVORITE Paul McCartney tracks, songs that I never get tired of hearing, most of them have sentimental value, they remind me of a particular person, place, and time. Obviously, "Band On The Run" is a timeless classic, but, I've heard it a million times and just don't NEED to hear it on a comp in my car. All I have to do is turn on a Classic Rock radio station and it'll be on in ten minutes. Anyway, these are my Paul McCartney FAVORITES, in some lyrical order: 1. Things We Said Today (live Unplugged version - Hello Chaps!) 2. Take It Away (mixed into the ending applause) 3. Junior's Farm 4. Waterfalls (single edit) 5. Young Boy 6. Little Willow 7. The World Tonight 8. Venus And Mars/Rock Show 9. Back In The U.S.S.R. (Back In The U.S.) 10. Let Me Roll It (Back In The U.S.) 11. Biker Like An Icon (Paul Is Live) 12. Your Loving Flame (Back In The U.S.) 13. Getting Closer 14. Maybe I'm Amazed (studio verson) 15. Jet 16. Another Day 17. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey 18. Rockestra Theme 19. Back Seat Of My Car 20. Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: TdHabib on April 17, 2009, 08:11:53 PM It's good that you made a favorites comp, I certainly don't need to hear "Live and Let Die" every time I choose Macca, and some very good choices---"Getting Closer"---man it's been a long time since I heard that one. Ever heard "Girls School"? Now that one rocks. Also you're automatically cool for picking "1985".
Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: Sheriff John Stone on April 17, 2009, 08:49:11 PM Ever heard "Girls School"? Yeah. That song wasn't even on the original release of London Town; popped up as a bonus track on the re-issue. You can't do justice to McCartney with a single disc comp, but, do you want to give it a shot? Title: Re: What are you listening to? Beware My Love (Wings over America) 9. We Got Married (Tripping the Live Fantastic!) 10. Tough on a Tightrope 11. Wanderlust 12. My Love 13. Bluebird 14. Put it There 15. Calico Skies 16. Beautiful Night 17. The medley at the end of Red Rose Speedway Timed it out at 76 minutes. Title: Re: What are you listening to? My true vote would be in the high 3s, so I'm rounding up to a 4. In some ways this is my favorite Brian Wilson solo album, with Smile having so much story, so much legend, so much baggage ... and superior existing versions of at least half the songs. This one, a few bits here and there aside, is new. And the songs are accessible and pleasant, sometimes touching. It's a good album. I would like it more if it were just songs, not a suite. The use of the title song melody throughout isn't a problem for me, but the narratives are. The bonus material is cool, too, whether it fits the theme or not. "I'm Into Something Good," "Just Like Me and You" and "Message Man" could easily have been added to the album (I'm not such a fan of "Oh Mi Amor.") Overall, very good. I think it's the best blending of Brian's and his band's vocals, and the best overall production of one of his solo albums. Title: Re: What are you listening to? See, one of the many differences in the sound of the Beach Boys and Jan&Dean is the drum sound (interestingly many people think that both acts sound the same). While Brian used them more to accentuate certain parts (hope it's clear what I mean), they are always on the move doing fills and stuff in a Jan Berry-production. I'd say a drummer (Blaine and Earl Palmer) in a Berry-session was probably sweating more than in a Wilson-session Title: Re: What are you listening to? But there are a couple of real keepers, and even the duds sound good.

Awesome local band. Just love that they aren't like every other band out there. Their use of different instruments just works in this really cool way. Can't get enough of them. I love Cricklewood Green, and Ten Years After in general, but this song is just brilliant. Maybe not a favorite, not sure, but the "I've got a feeling for home" part is so masterfully done. It sends me somewhere every time.

Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: the captain on August 05, 2009, 06:16:07 PM Levon Helm's Electric Dirt. What a fantastic album. I'm only a moderate fan of The Band, having their first three studio albums plus their stuff with Dylan. And while I had his Dirt Farmer album, I can't say I cared much one way or the other about it. But this album is extremely good. Larry Campbell did a great job producing, and Levon's voice is wonderful, reaching that pinnacle of broken beauty that the likes of Waits or modern Dylan inhabit.
And--here and there--is it funky! Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: TdHabib on August 05, 2009, 08:39:20 PM The New Pornagraphers "Mass Romantic." I'm only about halfway through it and it's damn good so far!

this one is actually great, i don't know what to compare it to. it's not new age space/spiritual music or minimalist drone ala la monte young but it's one sustained note, i think a C# that has a constant motion to it, with tibetan bells occasionally gliding across the surface of the overall ocean of the sound i listen to this more than everything these days. i have an ipod shuffle and before going to sleep i load this track (71 minutes) on it about seven times and then put it on at a low volume. i listen to it before meditating, sometimes during, and after. i sent it to someone i was corresponding with about meditation with a note that "this should set the mood well". it must have scared him because he never spoke about it again. it has a very impersonal sound to it, i guess. it would make a great companion for sensory deprivation activities. my experience of music is that it is not a harmless entity. when i hear ugly music it's like being in polluted air, i have to get away. i generally don't listen to anything that encodes ignorant feelings into its sound. this particular album gives the impression of being beyond the pure and impure of music. it's not really sit down and listen to this album sort of stuff. it's to help induce a meditative state of mind. it sounds amazing played loud on speakers although i rarely get the chance. if you listen to it based on my lengthy rambling, i recommend putting it up loud with the bass turned up, lights dimmed or turned off entirely, and with a free 71 minutes. you won't feel the same as when you went into it. One of my dad's favorite songs was "Wasn't Born To Follow". Since he died, a little less than two months ago, I've been listening to it a lot lately. Other than that, I've been listening to the complete Sylvester Weaver recordings, from 1923 to 1927. He was one of the first people in history to record what has become known today as blues music. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: Sheriff John Stone on December 08, 2009, 07:50:37 PM Picked up Paul McCartney's Good Evening New York City CD/DVD from Amazon for only $13.99
Interesting set list with recent stuff "Highway", "Only Mama Knows", "Dance Tonight", and "Sing The Changes"; some nice album tracks "Flaming Pie", "Calico Skies", and "Mrs. Vanderbilt"; and interesting Beatles' takes on "I'm Down", "I've Got A Feeling", "A Day In The Life", and "Helter Skelter". Paul's voice has gotten deeper (I think), but he still hits all the notes. And, even though it's live, Paul's bass playing is incredible; Abe's drumming is also a highlight. 33 songs on 2 CD's is quite a deal. I haven't had a chance to screen the DVD yet. Neil Young, lots of it, things like "Prairie Wind," (since I recently got the Heart of Gold film on DVD--one of the better concert DVDs), "Greendale," "Sleeps with Angels" and "Weld." What a great artist... Sparks, "Kimono My House" and "Propogranda." Never was all that aware of this group until recently. Love about half of the songs on both of the albums, am working on the other half. Neko Case, I LOVED "Middle Cyclone" and am trying to get into "Fox Confessor." Much less poppy, but will probably be as satisfying. Other than that, the old standbys: U2, Elton, XTC, Dennis Wilson. That was today. Title: Re: What are you listening to? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9Zsjphc3RI I love all these old songs, and Gordon Jenkins arranges them so they all flow together with little snippets inbetween - kind of like the Tin Pan Alley concept album! Besides that, Band on the Run and Ram have been getting a lot of play, as well as just loads of Nilsson. Nilsson Sings Newman might be the greatest album ever made. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: the captain on July 27, 2010, 08:13:07 AM I mean, the entire thing is perfect at what it's doing. Absolutely true. It is a gorgeous, gorgeous album. And when I said I don't agree it isn't the best album, I meant just that literally, without sarcasm or cynicism implied: it's in the conversation for me pretty quickly after "best" album. Maybe in the 5th to 10th range. I love it.[/quote]Hows that Prince? I can't keep up with what he's releasing nowadays.... last thing i got was the decidedly average Planet Earth I think of Prince in this regard similarly to an Elvis Costello, Frank Zappa, Paul McCartney, Eels, Fiery Furnaces, etc. He puts out a lot of music and it's the listener's problem to work it out from there (as opposed to releasing many truly great, no-filler albums). And this is right in line with that kind of thinking. There are three or four songs on there that I flat-out love, a couple I flat-out hate, and some stuff in the middle. The closer is truly bizarre, with the brilliant/idiotic line that I can only hope is a joke [and in that it's a hidden track, I assume it is]: "From the heart of Minnesota, here come the purple Yoda."Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: hypehat on July 27, 2010, 11:12:50 AM Haha, what an incredible line! So he's getting weirder on this one then? Planet Earth was SO bland, it depressed me. And I don't even know where to start with all this Lotus Flower stuff he did last year.... is it worth picking up?
Artists with huge back catalogues can be the most rewarding - I mean, look at the BB's. I'm currently starting to delve into Macca's 70's albums and am being pleasantly surprised with whatever £2 vinyl i can find at my local charity shops. my latest acqusition, Venus And Mars, is good, if slightly lightweight. I love the production on the album, and songs like 'Shooting Star' and 'What Good Am I' are some of his best, imo. Granted, 'Disease of Conceit' is one of the worst Bob Dylan songs I've ever heard, so you may have a point :lol Title: Re: What are you listening to? But I'm admittedly a pop-song guy, so I find little or no joy in little purportedly experimental or scenic interludes at all.

But I'm admittedly a pop-song guy, so I find little or no joy in little purportedly experimental or scenic interludes at all. No worries. I just love big sounding things, like Wagner, black metal, the Flaming Lips. I guess that's why I love Brian's production so much, I've always thought the Beatles production sounded really thin (no offense to them, The Beatles are great in their own way) and just get a big kick out of how lush and open it is, like a whole universe of music. The Circulatory System lp is just great like that. Now I'm listening to this though, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2T2KmZdifE&feature=related Something I think we can both agree on. I just bought this album a few weeks ago - incredibly beautiful. I was a little put off by the satire in the title song, but other than that, I find the album to be wonderful. Old Man is one of the saddest/most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: Myk Luhv on February 20, 2011, 09:42:50 PM Funny bit about "Old Man": Newman thought he wasted a very beautiful string arrangement on such a thoroughly depressing song. I can kind of understand that but... the asymmetry between the lyrics and music (not to mention the whole 'writing in characters' thing, of course) is one of the most compelling things about him as an artist! I don't think anyone else could get away with writing a song like "Guilty" or "Suzanne" or "It's Money That I Love".

I can't really explain why I like this album so much...probably because I grew up listening to it constantly during the mid-90s. I remember listening to it a lot during the 9/11 days. Jesus, was that really 10 years ago? Time flies. IMO it was U2's last album where they weren't trying to make hits...they were just making music. And as much as I like their music, it seems to me that Coldplay based most of their songs off of 'The First Time' and 'Dirty Day'. 'The Wanderer' is a great one too - Cash really paints a fantastic picture with that voice. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: Roger Ryan on June 17, 2011, 06:00:07 AM Most of this week I've been listening to MEMORIES OF LOVE by Future Bible Heroes, a Magnetic Fields off-shoot. Melodic and sardonic electro-pop. One track, "Real Summer", gently name-drops and chides the Beach Boys for creating an unattainable, perfect version of summer that the real season can't possibly live up to.

Rutter, Tragical History Tour, Let It Rut, Yellow Submarine Sandwich, Shabby Road... Also digging some of Dirk`s Punk Floyd stuff. Those Garcons Du Plage were pretty good, too-I think Stig played drums on a couple of their early 70s records. :lol :lol :lol

Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: rab2591 on June 27, 2011, 07:19:17 AM Been on a week long Beach Boys binge. Just made a Holland/Carl and the Passions playlist. Been listening to Surfin' USA album constantly.
Listened to the new Coldplay single 'Moving to Mars' - great song. Also been listening the hell out of The Doors lately. And after a week without my stereo I'm reinstalling it tonight and will crank up Good Timin' - Live at Knebworth. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: stevemc90 on June 30, 2011, 11:35:28 PM The first 5 Laura Nyro albums. So so so so good. Damn right they are! I've always maintained that she, alongside Brian, is one of the true geniuses to have emerged out of the pop mold. Totally idiosyncratic, ecstatic, profound music, such incredible breadth of expression. Gonna put on Eli right now. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: hypehat on July 04, 2011, 03:58:34 PM Was spinning New York Tendaberry earlier and getting a little bit sad.
Now I am listening to Spiritualized's Let It Come Down, a transcendentally beautiful, powerful album. Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: JK on July 19, 2011, 08:34:35 AM I see album cover images are non-PC around here-----pity!
Just been listening to Philosophy of the World by The Shaggs, following a comment in another thread. If POTW was Zappa's third favourite album, what could nos. 1 and 2 have been? Anybody know? :=| Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: Alex on July 20, 2011, 10:53:57 PM Petra Haden Sings The Who Sell Out
Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: Myk Luhv on July 21, 2011, 07:45:35 AM I am listening to a compilation of Miriam Makeba songs. I'm not entirely sure of the time frame but I'd have to guess 1950s to '70s? I don't know how I didn't do this sooner though, it's so good!

Post by: Alex on July 23, 2011, 08:20:15 PM Love F&G! And Undeclared, and pretty much all of Judd Apatow`s work...including 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad, Pineapple Express, etc.
Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: Chocolate Shake Man on July 23, 2011, 09:38:49 PM Funny this should come up - I'm working my way through the Freaks and Geeks series for the second time.
Also, on topic: I'm going through a huge Neil Young phase right now. I've always loved the big albums like Goldrush, Everybody Knows, Tonight's The Night, Harvest, Rust Never Sleeps, etc. But I've been exploring some of the lesser knowns and later albums which were hits but that I never heard. I absolutely love American Stars n' Bars - it's a vastly underrated album in the Young discography. I also really like Ragged Glory. I'd love to say I love Trans but I've yet to gain the confidence to get the whole album. Still "Transformer Man" is a great track. And, really, what is most impressive about the guy is his incredible versatility and that he's still producing music that seems true to the artistic vision he had going back to his earliest recordings (which, you can't really say for many artists who came out of the 60s). Title: Re: What are you listening to? Post by: hypehat on October 15, 2011, 04:36:08 AM Godfrey Daniels 'Take A Sad Song'. Doo-wop covers done by a 'mystery band' in '72 of stuff like Purple Haze, Dance To The Music, Proud Mary.... and two versions of Hey Jude! It is literally my happy place. Horrifyingly out of print, though. Definitely scour ebay for it.
