"Chelsea Girls" by Nico. I like the haunting sound of this song, but I understand Nico didn't....
http://nico.lyrics.info/chelseagirls.html

I love the Chelsea Girl album and Nico's voice, personally.

I think I like the lyrics as much as the melody. And, of course, the song was written by Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison. Apparently, Nico wanted more guitar and drums - and no flute - on the recording.

iTunes on random: Zappa's "The Grand Wazoo" (the song, not the album) at the moment.

"It's all over" by the Everly Brothers.
Probably one of the best vocal-performances of all time. The middle-eight (or what it's called) sung by, I believe, Phil has to stand almost next to Carl's GOK-vocal in it's beauty and clearness

Paul McCartney's "Let Me Roll It" from Back In The U.S.

OK, I'm gonna make one of those "this is the greatest" statements....I can't believe how great Paul's vocal is on this track, and so (relatively) late in his career. It gives me goosebumps when he sings, "I can't tell you how I feel". It's the "I can't" part; where does that come from? From his gut! His soul! When he sings it, you can't tell if he's 20, 30, 40, or 60; it's timeless....

I think it's in the all-time Top 5 Paul McCartney lead vocals. Agree or disagree? Which ones, in your opinion, can top it?

Had a listen to it and it is indeed classic, the final "in the PALM of my HAND" is just great, but in all honesty I find Paul's vocals almost always great, he has a voice that honestly can rarely miss, only when he tries to overpower it every now and then. I dunno if these can top the "Let Me Roll It" live vocal, but two of my favorites that are just as good are "Maybe I'm Amazed" and a tune from 1982 called "Wanderlust," one of my all time favorites; also I know many people dislike Driving Rain but "Your Loving Flame" is a heck of a vocal for a later period. Also a favorite is the b-section "Well the rain exploded with a mighty crash" from "Band on the Run." But I don't wanna get carried away Grin

Did you ever put together a Macca comp, Sheriff?

TdHabib, you mentioned "Wanderlust", well, I think the entire Tug Of War album has great vocals; I like that album; takes me back to the great MTV years! And, it's interesting you mentioned "Your Loving Flame" because - it made my compilation!

Now, before I get hammered, this is not a "Greatest Hits" or a "Best Of" compilation. These are my FAVORITE Paul McCartney tracks, songs that I never get tired of hearing, most of them have sentimental value, they remind me of a particular person, place, and time. Obviously, "Band On The Run" is a timeless classic, but, I've heard it a million times and just don't NEED to hear it on a comp in my car. All I have to do is turn on a Classic Rock radio station and it'll be on in ten minutes. Anyway, these are my Paul McCartney FAVORITES, in some lyrical order:

1. Things We Said Today (live Unplugged version - Hello Chaps!)
2. Take It Away (mixed into the ending applause)
3. Junior's Farm
4. Waterfalls (single edit)
5. Young Boy
6. Little Willow
7. The World Tonight
8. Venus And Mars/Rock Show
9. Back In The U.S.S.R. (Back In The U.S.)
10. Let Me Roll It (Back In The U.S.)
11. Biker Like An Icon (Paul Is Live)
12. Your Loving Flame (Back In The U.S.)
13. Getting Closer
14. Maybe I'm Amazed (studio verson)
15. Jet
16. Another Day
17. Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey
18. Rockestra Theme
19. Back Seat Of My Car
20. Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five

It's good that you made a favorites comp, I certainly don't need to hear "Live and Let Die" every time I choose Macca, and some very good choices---"Getting Closer"---man it's been a long time since I heard that one. Ever heard "Girls School"? Now that one rocks. Also you're automatically cool for picking "1985".

Ever heard "Girls School"?

Yeah. That song wasn't even on the original release of London Town; popped up as a bonus track on the re-issue.

You can't do justice to McCartney with a single disc comp, but, do you want to give it a shot?

I'll give it a shot, I'm not good at sequencing and no it doesn't do justice, but here's 17 favorites some well known some not:

1. Jet
2. Take it Away
3. Listen to What the Man Said
4. Too Many People
5. Girls School (b-side to Mull of Kintyre btw)
6. Let Me Roll It (a live version)
7. Maybe I'm Amazed (Wings over America)
8. Beware My Love (Wings over America)
9. We Got Married (Tripping the Live Fantastic!)
10. Tough on a Tightrope
11. Wanderlust
12. My Love
13. Bluebird
14. Put it There
15. Calico Skies
16. Beautiful Night
17. The medley at the end of Red Rose Speedway

Timed it out at 76 minutes.

I like it - both the selection and the sequence. That version of "We Got Married" (from Tripping The Live Fantastic) is a hidden gem; great guitar work BTW. And "Tough On A Tightrope" - wow! A good comp to put in the car and cruise around on a nice spring day - or night ("Beautiful Night")....

"Dark Globe" is a good one. But, I think my favorite song from The Madcap Laughs is "Late Night". Syd sounds completely normal on that one. His songwriting and singing on "Late Night" are on a par with Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, I think....

At this particular moment, Heartless Bastards' album from earlier this year, The Mountain. I prefer their first one, Stairs and Elevators, but this is still good, muscular, bluesy (and on this album, Zeppelin-folky sometimes) rock music. Erika Wennerstrom is great.

33 1/3-George Harrison
Brainwashed-George Harrison (both of these are amazing--just superb)
On an Island-David Gilmour (blue and beautiful in small doses)
Kick Inside-Kate Bush (just getting used to her voice--"Wuthering Heights" is classic)
Everything that Happens will Happen Today-David Byrne and Brian Eno (a new classic)
Ghost in the Machine-The Police (mayhaps a bit patchy, but I love "Invisible Sun")
