Kris Kristofferson has been popping up on TV lately, so I thought I'd give him a good listen. I'm particularly enjoying:

Help Me Make It Through The Night
Sunday Morning Coming Down
This Old Road
A Moment Of Forever (Willie Nelson's version is a classic)
Me And Bobby McGee
Casey's Last Ride

I've been reading about Kristofferson lately (there was a good article in a recent Rolling Stone), and I read that "This Old Road", the song, was originally recorded for an album in 1986, and re-recorded in 2006. So, I listened to them both. The older version is a little smoother and faster, but I also like the rougher poignancy of the newer version.

Yeah, I agree. His 80s releases sound a little too polished imo. "This old road" (the album", which features some other re-recordings, sounds more down-to-earth and honest....

A nice hot 85 degree day; got out some Willie Nelson, specifically later Willie. Check out:

"Still Is Still Moving To Me"
"A Moment Of Forever"
"Mendocino County Line"
"Gotta Serve Somebody"
"Beer For My Horses" (yes, it rocks!)
"Graceland"

Herman Dune "Giant." Still the best album of the past few years that nobody gives a damn about (or never heard to begin with).

Yep. You can add that to the list, too. That Kristofferson, Cash, Nelson, and outlaw stuff is great summertime music. Songs like "Sunday Morning Coming Sown", "If You've Got The Money I've Got The Time", "Ring Of Fire" and even some of Dylan's country-flavored material sounds good when it's hot and muggy.... police

I myself love listening to that stuff throughout the whole year, but yeah, I kinda know what you mean. I guess there's just something about listening to Jennings' "Just to satisfy you" while it's dry and hot outside.

BTW here's some BW and kristofferson. Unfortunately no one seems to have filmed "Fun fun fun" from that same concert:

What a great video; I've never seen that. And what a unique pairing with those two old warhorses up there together. Do you think they had a few rough nights in their lifetimes between the two of them....And what a rockin' version of "Me And Bobby McGee"; but Kris could still keep up!

Just ordered and received in the mail "The Emitt Rhodes Recordings (1969-1973)": all four of his solo albums on two discs.  Unbelievable stuff.

Also "Give Me Take You" by Duncan Browne.

Both reissues released this year.

Bought the Leonard Cohen Live in London DVD, so I guess that counts. Just wanted to point out the performance of "Suzanne" is astonishing, the look in Cohen's eyes is intense and passionate, his mind is clear and focused. It almost made me cry.

That's great--I didn't know it was out. I've looked (lazily, I admit) for official E. Rhodes albums because I don't like having burned or unbought digital copies of things I like that are commercially released. (I'm a buy it or delete it kind of guy.) You're correct: he was awesome.

"It's As Easy As 1,2,3" - Jan & Dean

I thought it was appropriate for this week; it's a charming little song. Jan Berry, like Brian Wilson, had that romantic innocence and this song is a good example of that. There's a lot going on in this song; and Hal Blaine - whew!

Today I listened to a Harry Partch collection, Belle & Sebastian's "Fold Your Hands...," a Satie collection, TLOS, the new Iron & Wine collection and the new St. Vincent. I think that's it. But I could be wrong. Nothing really hit the spot: it was just one of those days when a guy wants to peruse.

I really like TLOS. Did since I heard that first live show boot. Liked the demos. Like the album.

See? As I said on Sept. 7 '08.

My true vote would be in the high 3s, so I'm rounding up to a 4. In some ways this is my favorite Brian Wilson solo album, with Smile having so much story, so much legend, so much baggage ... and superior existing versions of at least half the songs. This one, a few bits here and there aside, is new. And the songs are accessible and pleasant, sometimes touching. It's a good album. I would like it more if it were just songs, not a suite. The use of the title song melody throughout isn't a problem for me, but the narratives are. The bonus material is cool, too, whether it fits the theme or not. "I'm Into Something Good," "Just Like Me and You" and "Message Man" could easily have been added to the album (I'm not such a fan of "Oh Mi Amor.") Overall, very good. I think it's the best blending of Brian's and his band's vocals, and the best overall production of one of his solo albums.

Yeah, that's a great one !
See, one of the many differences in the sound of the Beach Boys and Jan&Dean is the drum sound (interestingly many people think that both acts sound the same). While Brian used them more to accentuate certain parts (hope it's clear what I mean), they are always on the move doing fills and stuff in a Jan Berry-production. I'd say a drummer (Blaine and Earl Palmer) in a Berry-session was probably sweating more than in a Wilson-session
