Here's one:
For the flipside use Don't Fight The Sea, which already includes Al, Bruce, Brian, Carl & Mike. And yes it would have to be leased from Al's recent album - I know that... But then they could add a few guitar licks and/or vocal overdubs from earlier Beach Boys members: David Marks, Glen Campbell, Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar to really make it a legitimate Beach Boys production!
For the other side: Re-record Auld Lang Syne with a twist. Cliff Richard had his "Millennium Prayer" singing the words from The Lord's Prayer to the tune of Auld Lang Syne (- AND a #1-hit).
Now why not do it the other way around? Sing the words from Auld Lang Syne using Brian's wonderful music arrangement from The Lord's Prayer. We know that Bruce loves this one and wanted the Boys to re-record it for ages.
Now here's a golden opportunity! And remember that the ideas have to be do-able for our Boys!

I'd love to see "Don't Fight the Sea" being issued as a Beach Boys song. Really wish some of Alan's songs would have been saved for an upcoming band project, such as "San Simeon", which I think could have been great with Mike Love having a shot at Gerry Beckley's part.

Jesus Christ, The Boys have raped their credibility well enough on their own without taking tips from Cliff Richard!

Dusting an old Brian or Al tune off is the way to go, I think. Hell, California Feelin' has a Carl lead. Update the production (it's a fairly basic track, so not so hard), have the boys add another layer of harmonies, release it without too much hoo-ha on itunes and limited edition 7". Boom. Everyone's a winner.

If only Brian didn't do it first....  Angry

Cliff & The Shadows: Living Doll = #1 smash hit
Cliff & The Young Ones: Living Doll = #1 smash hit
Cliff & The Beach Boys: Living Doll =  ......   (if only Dennis could have taken the role of Vyvyan and smash around with that hammer at the end of the video clip... garanteed another #1 smash hit  Grin )

I would like something not lush, cause it will sound sappy, but something that rocks like the early stuff, all new, with age appropriate lyrics. Like poignant but not sappy, garagey, and kick ass harmony [as best can be accomplished by old men].

Who'd sing it? The Beach Boys couldn't unless they dropped it about a fifth or had sidemen take the high parts. (And who wants a reunion a capella Beach Boys song by someone other than them?)

Glen Campbell was never a member of the Beach Boys. A person with as much BB's knowledge as you Rasmus should know that.

Depends what side of the bed you wake up on.
He (obviously)WAS a member of the TOURING Beach Boys, so for some, that makes him a member of the Beach Boys.
reminds me of the arguments on whether the current touring group is really "THE" Beach Boys

My first thought on hearing the chorus of "San Simeon" was that this could've been the last BB hit had they been featured on it and had it been kept for the 50th anniversary and all the promotion that'd come with that. Still, not a "Kokomo"-sized hit, but maybe in the range of what "Getcha Back" did.

Simple really - does Glenn get any royalties from any of the Beach Boys songs he played on ? I think not. Ergo, not a member.

I've heard Mike many times in concert say "Poor Glen, he could of been somebody, if he only stayed with The Beach Boys". So, at least one original Beach Boy thinks Glen was a Beach Boy at some point. Wink

You should tell Mike to send Glen his artist royalties because he never received a single one for being a Beach Boy. The reason for that is because he was never a member of the Beach Boys.

I'd like to see DFTS on a 50th BB release.    I was thinking that before reading this thread.

But, I may just have to make my own 50th BB anniv album.    Starting with DFTS.    We  can't depend on these guys to do it  And I have some additional somewhat recent releases and good live recordings that wil fit nicely.

Are there any Carl, solo songs that didn't have backing vocals?  Maybe they could just take one of those and flesh it out more.

The best way to do an anniversary single though would be to write something new.  Of course Carl and Dennis wouldn't be on it, but maybe they could find some interesting vocals of theirs that were never released, from another song or something.  Then rewrite a song around those few lines or whatever.  They could even use something that was released, if done properly.

I'm surprised they haven't done more of that stuff, I'm sure somebody around these two bands (Brians, Mikes) is creative enough to come up with some great ideas.

I don't think it would be a good idea to sample Carl or Dennis' voice and incorporate it into a new song. I think the best idea, if the band wants to put out some new material would be to just release something like "(Wouldn't It Be Nice) To Live Again" or some unreleased Beach Boys song featuring Carl. And then maybe add some more voices to it. But please...no sampling. If they want to do a totally new song, do it with Brian and some combination of Mike, Al, Bruce, David, Blondie, or Ricky....and just do what you can.

Still can't see Blondie or Ricky involved in this 50th thing, they've pretty much had nothing to do with the BB since they left, can't see that changing now. MAYBE you get them (most likely Ricky) to sit on a couple of songs in a concert, but that's it.

I don't know.  Like David, Blondie has spoken more about the Beach Boys in the last ten years or so than he probably did the whole time he was with them or after, up til that point because, also like David, no one ever thought to ask him before.  I'd love to see all three of them (Blondie, David and Ricky) incorporated into the reunion, in some form, whatever it may be.

Dont know if you consider it have nothing to do with the BB after they left: Ricky played drums on POB & KTSA I believe....Blondie's key involvement (for the anniversary) should be Wild Honey lead and Sail On Sailor.

I mean, it only makes sense, being that it was a Carl vocal from the beginning and Blondie's vocals on it when performed in concert is fantastic, it only makes sense to give him that lead.
