I've been listening to this tonight out of curiosity  since the renewed interest in an original SMiLE release at some point.  I bought this vinyl lp with original cover art at Ameoba Records in San Francisco a few years ago.    They had a couple of copies and the price was right.  I didn't expect much but there are bits on here I had NEVER heard.  The inside label says "copyright surfin' records" 1971.
I actually listened more carefully this evening than before.  I'm going to put this in digital so I can use pieces on a comp of my own creation.

Who among the world class SMiLE wizards here can tell me more about this piece and how it came to be?

Just various bits. Obviously the ones not released on the 93  box or twofers.  Some are obviously rough and early cuts.  And some have popped up here and there. I don't have all of the SOT stuff so you may have heard the rest on something like that.  It is definitely cobbled together from different sources including the box and 20/20.

It's the same thing as SOT 16, just that a bootlegger bootlegged a bootlegger by bootlegging this bootleg on bootleg vinyl.

Thats just what I thought.  I think I have everything but SOT 16.  I might actually have it if I look real hard.

I just thought it was a neat package at the record store.   Under 20 bucks I recall.   Wish I'd taken the cover to the BW show where he signed my Pet Sounds LP.

I might be waaaay off base here but I seem to recall he wouldn't sign bootlegs of that Frank Holmes Smile cover. I may be remembering something that never happened, though, it happens to me all the time.

A funny story is how someone from the Smile Shop made a Smile mix for kicks and it ended up as a Japanese bootleg release if I recall!  Grin That one is true.

I too seem to have heard that. Probably why I didn't take it to the show.  But I DO recall someone posting a BW signed cover of this or one just like it.

I had Smile Frank Holmes variations to take but I left them home too! I think if someone did get Brian's signature on a Holmes cover, it was well before BWPS was thought of. I think that was the game-changer. Plus most Holmes covers were bootlegs and that was a no-no, they wanted all the new Smile artwork and no boots, I'm thinking.

Yep.  Really lousy sounding bootleg vinyl at that.  Of all the vinyl boots, this one is my least favorite.

Smile Frank Holmes variations?

Just the different Smile covers that appeared on various bootlegs and bootleg releases (and a few cover slick sales too).

For example, the cover slick sold as a repro says "Full Dimensional..." on the top of the slick, while another says "Duophonic" on the top. And some have different shading and less vivid colors than others. Those are the ones which are or were labeled as 'originals'.

The print ads from that time are confusing - most say "Full Dimensional...", yet the back cover slick says "Duophonic", which is a conflict. Some covers have the banner words "Good Vibrations" listed above the Smile Shop, others do not.

The boots have all kinds of variations with new lettering and shading and whatnot, from GEMA to Vigotone, etc., so that's not really worth getting into.

The one I've had as my screensaver since my PC was new is a nice scan of the "Duophonic" cover, for the record... Smiley

What then is your favorite vinyl boot?

My favorite is the 3 LP colored vinyl set with the fold out poster.  But I have a special place in my heart for the 1985 single LP boot.  Not because of the content, just because it was the one that took me the longest to track down.

What is your favorite for sound quality?  And content.   I have enjoyed my Landlocked LP over the years.  Sort of stands on its own/

The same.  I might as well list them in order of preference:

Smile 3 LP
Smile 2 LP
Smile - Second Edition (1985)
Smile (1983)
Smile (SOT)

The reason I list the SOT last is that the cd version sounds much better and you get a nice booklet with it.  In my case, the vinyl pressing just takes up space.  The '83 and '85 boots aren't really that good now, but I find them charming.  I guess I think they're neat since I was a child then and had no idea who the Beach Boys or Smile was.  It's fun to play them from the perspective that they were the only public source for the music back then.

I had a buddy in Chicago get the old old single lp SMile boot (Which I gave him since I had the three record colored vinyl set. D'oh!!) signed in '98 or '99, whenever Imagination came out. He also signed my copy of Spring and the Mt. Vernon 7 inch that day btw.

That time period would make sense, I said in a later post in this thread that I think either he stopped signing or they stopped allowing Smile covers to be brought in to be signed after BWPS had its own covers, artwork, tote bags, etc. to represent the album. Again, the disclaimer is I could be totally wrong about this but I'd swear I heard it somewhere.

there were , of course, different versions of the original Smile covers( original slicks)
the Duophonic cover has Good Vibrations Good Vibrations Good Vibrations  between Smile and the picture.
the New Improved  Full Dimensional Stereo cover doesn't have the GVs.
The original back cover slicks have DT-2580 and High fidelity Recording, but don't specifically say Duophonic on them.

Brian signed my SOT SMILE CD cover backstage in 2005.  He didn't seem to even think about what he was signing.  David Leaf also had Brian sign a SMILE CD cover for me in 2000.  I've also heard that Brian's "assistants" won't let him sign instuments any more except for charity.

Back in 1980, when the band were in Scandinavia, a well-meaning fan gave Brian a repro of the Smile cover to sign. Result: one very agitated Brian, one shredded print, one confused fan.

Well think about it for a second.  "Here, Brian, would you sign this cover of an illegally obtained bootleg of material that was stolen from you that you haven't wanted released since the project was canned?"

I see the weirdness!  Grin
