fakes you were fooled by
«
on:
November 10, 2010, 03:26:36 PM »
I know when I've heard certain rare recordings, I've been fooled into thinking of what could have been or what was real or not....this not only touches issues around the Smile era. But I'm talking about the innocent days when you didn't know any better or didn't have this great message board to come (or you were mistakenly on the Blooboard)...When you received (not discussing how were got it) a rarity or some sort of 'foot ware', you may have been fooled like me. I remember, and yes, we all know Landlocked
is not
a real album, somebody gave me a copy of it and it started with Out in the Country, and I was floored, I thought, this was to part of Surf's Up? Even just a snippet like that on the album would have been suffice for me for some artistic value, of course, we know it didn't come from that era, or so I think. Then it has a section called the Monterrey Saga (includes Lookin Down the Coast, early cut of Big Sur and Santa Ana Winds), and I thought, dang, that woulda been great on Surf's Up, but how young and innocent I was in those days of not know their vocals or production trademarks of what era.
anyone else suffer from this?

It had me fooled 25-30 years ago... but once enlightened I bought the Porgy & Bess album. It IS a superb track! Cheers Peter!

Well, I've just paid £50 on Ebay for a copy of Remember The Zoo
Apparently it comes with some love letters Brian wrote in the 60s
I'll let you know what it's like!!

I wonder how many people 'Here Come De Honey Man' fooled.... For those around for the first bootlegs, did you believe it was Brian?

No, not for a moment. It just didn't
feel
right, and the way it panned didn't sit right either - I don't recall a single instance of that in Brian's work up to that date. Likewise, the "Doves of Peace/New Song" track didn't shout
Smile
to me when it first emerged, and it wasn't.

"fakes you were fooled by"...people or songs?
Ant-Bee covering the Worms track than having it show up on the ultimate Smile boot of its day was pretty sneaky, and thanks to the internet I think one of the most common Smile questions became "What's with this version of Do You Like Worms?". But Ant-Bee also covered "Love Is Only Sleeping", one of my favorite Monkees tracks and a hidden gem of a song, so I don't hold a grudge...
PS - The "Spanish Guitar" thing sounded more like film studio canned music than a Smile piece, but the mere mention of the word "new" next to "Smile" makes the heart race and common sense goes out the door.

Back when there was naughty Napster, I remember looking for Smile boots. One of them was a very strange track called Do You Dig Worms?. For the longest time, I thought it was a BB cut. Found out later it was recorded by members of the Mothers of Invention (?). I think I first discovered that on this board in fact.

I gotta admit, Ant Bee fooled me too, especially since their version of "Worms" showed up on the first *achooboot* that came into my possession. The Smile Shop (and then Google) set me straight on what that was all about. They did a pretty decent job on that tune.

The exact opposite once happened to me. I heard Oh Lord back in the Napster days, and I was almost positive that it
was not
a Brian or Dennis related track.

What is the end result of this track's history? Somehow I missed out and I was hoping it would be discussed in this thread.

It was done during Friends sessions in 1968, i believe. It's a Beach Boys production, but I wonder who was running the session - Brian? Carl?
