I'm hoping that this topic doesn't stray to far off as far as board rules concern. My question is, is there any website that gives a basic archive of the available concert recordings(audience tapes, FM Broadcasts, etc) that are traded along fans? I know of some of the "big name" shows, like Chicago 1965, Carnegie Hall 1971, ect. But what about audience tapes from 1979-1983, for example? Or the 1969 tour?

I still have that audience tape from Sept. 81 I've been meaning to dig out...

There isn't an all-encompassing LIST but if you give me a few days I can make a workable list building from my own personal stuff plus known recordings that I haven't laid my grubby mitts on yet. Problem is that the list would inevitably be incomplete as far as what circulates versus what EXISTS. In many cases I've talked to people who taped shows only to get terrible recordings as a result; while they may have the tapes they don't see the need for sharing them as they're poor to begin with.

I can't really ballpark how many tapes there are short of counting the stuff in my trade list one by one and working with other recordings I know exist. In some cases a tape documents a complete gig, some only a partial (we're even talking one or two songs).

I suppose, since it's relatively the easiest to go with as of now, here's a brief list of any tapes that aren't of the band or Brian, as it's a short list! Smiley And I'll keep it non-taper geek. Durations are based on my recollections of the tapes (yes, I've actually LISTENED to them, and my memory is surprisingly AGD-ish with regards to this geek stuff).

I would like to point out that, by no means, do I know any information regarding those individuals who taped these gigs. This is merely a list of what I know is out there.

Month/day/year | Venue, city and state/country | (Duration, source)

AL JARDINE

8/20/05   Bonfante Gardens, Gilroy, CA (35 minutes, audience)
10/20/08   The Roxy Theater, Los Angeles, CA (15 minutes, audience)

BEACH BOYS FAMILY AND FRIENDS

2/28/99   Strawberry Festival, Plant City, FL (two 50 minute sets, audience)
3/30/99   Stone Mountain Park, Atlanta, GA (70 minutes, audience video)
7/17/99   Seagaze, Oceanside, CA (75 minutes, audience)
8/27/99   Antelope Valley Fair, Lancaster, CA (70 minutes, audience)
10/9/99   Topeka Performing Arts Center, Topeka, KS (110 minutes, audience) - this gig is a personal favorite, and also the longest of the BBF&F shows that are known to circulate.
12/30/99   Soaring Eagle Casino, Mt. Pleasant, MI (65 minutes, audience)

AL JARDINE AND THE ENDLESS SUMMER BAND

7/25/03   Harborfest, Oswego, NY (70 minutes, audience video)
4/5/08   Suncoast Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, NV (90 minutes, audience)

MIKE LOVE

?/?/74   Unknown Location (3 minutes, from radio broadcast) - it's one song, California Girls. John McLaughlin on guitar and Charles Lloyd on flute. A meeting of TM minds?
11/6/81   Chadds Ford, PA (90 minutes, audience)

MIKE LOVE AND CELEBRATION

4/28/78   University of California, Los Angeles, CA (60 minutes, audience) - Brian, Carl, and Al are present with Michael.
5/6/78   American Bandstand, Hollywood, CA (5 minutes, from television) - Al is present with Michael.

MIKE LOVE AND DEAN TORRENCE

3/22/82   Daytona Beach Bandshell, Daytona Beach, FL (90 minutes, audience) - personal favorite; Michael and Dean put on a hell of a show this day. John Cowsill sat in on drums.
?/?/83   Houston, TX (45 minutes, soundboard)

MIKE LOVE AND THE ENDLESS SUMMER BEACH BAND

6/?/90   Tokyo, Japan (20 minutes, from either soundboard or pre-FM master)

MIKE LOVE AND DENNIS WILSON

5/9/74   Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden, New York, NY (5 minutes, audience) - Dennis' contribution is debatable, some folks insist he's here. California Girls and Blowin' In The Wind. The whole gig exists as well, with performances by Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Phil Ochs, David Van Ronk, and speeches by Dennis Hopper. This was a benefit engagement for Chilean relief in the aftermath of the 1973 USA-sanctioned removal of democratically-elected Chilean president Salvador Allende and the ensuing torture and murder of Victor Jara and thousands of others who supported Allende's socialist policies.

CARL WILSON

4/6/81     Center Stage, Detroit, MI (40 minutes, audience)
4/7/81   The Agora, Cleveland, OH (40 minutes, audience)
4/11/81   My Father’s Place, Roslyn, NY (55 minutes, FM broadcast)
4/13/81   The Bottom Line, New York, NY (55 minutes, FM broadcast)
4/23/81   The Roxy Theatre, Los Angeles, CA (55 minutes, audience)

DAVID MARKS

9/11/04   Towerlands, Briantree, Essex, England (90 minutes, audience) - one of the Beach Legends gigs, with David backed up by Jeff Foskett and Billy Hinsche among many others.
5/29/07   "The Lost Beach Boy Party", Santa Monica Pier, CA (100 minutes, audience)
10/20/08   The Roxy Theater, Los Angeles, CA (10 minutes, audience)
8/2/09     Eddie's Attic, Decatur, GA (75 minutes, soundboard) - this was put up on David's site a while back.

I think this one requires some explaining! What is Mike Love doing at such a rally, considering he seems by most every account to be the sort of person that would not keep the company of folks who are otherwise committed leftist radicals of one kind or another. Was it just because a Beach Boy would help boost some attendance given the time of the concert and the current recuperating status of the Boys as a worthwhile live act? I know Bob Dylan appeared in order to support the cause and to get more people to show up as tickets were not selling very fast, at least. This seems most curious because while I suppose none of the Beach Boys were ever politically active in any way -- they did play Sun City after all -- I would at least have figured Al Jardine more likely to show up for this kind of thing than Mike Love, you know? It's neither here nor there, but I find it most curious -- especially that Dennis may have been there along with Mike (and no other Beach Boys)!

Perhaps I am overly tired... I must sleep on it and hopefully when I wake up this will not be too embarrassing...

Dennis was not there, and Mike's part was shown on TV (he was backed by John McLaughlin & Charles Lloyd on "California Girls"). He got booed, btw.

Live shows - there are tapes from every year of the band's existence from 1962 to date, in quality ranging from soundboard/FM stereo radio show to almost entirely unlistenable (the 1970 Whiskey show is sadly in the latter category) and whole concert to less than one complete song. I don't think there a website with the list you're seeking (would be a damn fine idea, mind).

John McLaughlin playing California Girls? That could be either the best thing ever, or horrendous new age noodlewank.

That app was I think Mike's first show without the BBs (of course he'd do tons after that). He was a bit nervous and told an interviewer that the best part of the show was the glass of wine Dylan gave him backstage when he came off.  He noted that he hesitated before taking it-because he'd basically sworn off drinking for quite awhile as he got more into TM. He said he was probably the only person that hesitated to accept anything from Bob Dylan.  The footage of Mike from this show was used by News shows in late 74 when they were reporting on the surprise success of Endless Summer and the nostalgia revival.  I must admit that I left it out of my first TV article for ESQ.

In '74 I think the only possibility is best thing ever.  In fact, I may have to do a cover, if Mahavishnu had covered California Girls.  It would be, at least, very fast and in 11/8.

"I think this one requires some explaining! What is Mike Love doing at such a rally."

There has been a suggestion that when Mike and Boys started playing rallies for the GOP, they had also offered their services to the Democrats - and they had, after all, played at some inauguration gig for Jimmy Carter...

Had a cassette tape of this since, oh, late 70s. Nothing to get fussed about.

MIKE LOVE AND DENNIS WILSON

Mike Love's political views are more complex than it may seem. They're certainly more complex than the WIBN autobio "conservative republican" tag... Mike seems to be a radical in matters of environment, and was outspoken against the Irak war since its beginning. Too bad he got booed at this show.

The Michael/McLaughlin/Lloyd California Girls sounds EXACTLY like someone mixed the Beach Boys, Charles Lloyd's early 1970s albums, and the acoustic Mahavishnu Orchestra tunes. It doesn't work 100%; Michael sounds WAY out of his element. Frankly, I'm sure John McLaughlin thought he was too good for the company he had in that session.

Thanks everybody, for the info. It would be great if somebody could do a website like Eric Anniversario's setlist archive, but only an archive of available recordings.

The BB's in Concert?  Grin

Seriously, I can vouch for Hartford '73, Sycaruse '71 (I think it's 71 - it's commonly booted as 'Do It Again') although inexplicably the bass drum is mixed way too high and someone can't play the bass very well, and obviously the Carnegie Hall '72 show - it's the best quality, although a short setlist and the band insists on changing the snare drum three times and tuning up interminably between each song. Cracking versions of H&V and GOK, though - and it's also where Wonderbill off EH comes from, if you didn't know.

Others obviously know more than me about this  Smiley

Here's a bit more of the LIST, covering the 1960s.

7/14/62   Radio KOXR Diaper Derby, Oxnard, CA (35 seconds, with a 2 minute Brian interview, from radio) - the song excerpt here is Mr. Moto.
7/28/62   Azuza Teen Club, Azuza, CA (3 minutes, television) - this is the "One Man's Challenge" video, where they played Surfin' Safari.
10/19/63   Y-Day Concert, Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, CA (15 minutes, soundboard) - also features the Honeys on Be True To Your School.
1/24/64   ATN-7 Television, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia (10 minutes, soundboard) - What'd I Say is from this gig. Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow and Little Deuce Coupe are the other tunes.
3/12/64   The Steve Allen Show, KFMB Television Studios, New York, NY (6 minutes, television)
3/14/64   NBC Television Studios, Burbank, CA (25 minutes, film master) - The Lost Concert.
5/12/64   The Red Skelton Show, Los Angeles, CA (3 minutes, from television) - this is the "half live" version of In My Room shown in American Band.
8/1/64   Civic Memorial Auditorium, Sacramento, CA (two 45 minute gigs, soundboard) - from the SOTs.

11/6/64   Ready, Steady, Go, ITV Television Studios, London, England (5 minutes, television) - the first known "live" performance of When I Grow Up; this was basically a live in the studio gig, as none of the 1964 UK appearances were concerts.
11/21/64   Konserthuset, Stockholm, Sweden (18 minutes, radio)
12/14/64   Shindig!, ABC Television Studios, Los Angeles, CA (10 minutes, television)
3/26/65   McCormick Auditorium, Chicago, IL (10 minutes, soundboard) - SOTs.
3/27/65   McCormick Auditorium, Chicago, IL (10 minutes, soundboard) - SOTs.
4/21/65   Shindig!, ABC Television Studios, Los Angeles, CA (8 minutes, television) - only partial clips of this circulate.
10/22/65   The Andy Williams Show, NBC Television Studios, Burbank, CA (12 minutes, television) - Little "Cycle" in place of Little Honda.
10/23/65   The Jack Benny Hour, NBC Television Studios, Burbank, CA (10 minutes, television) - worth it to see Brian and Michael have a "row" with Jack Benny and Bob Hope.
1/7/66   Shibuya Koukaido, Tokyo, Japan (35 minutes, soundboard)

1970-73 -

2/28/70   Opera House, Seattle, WA (45 minutes, audience) - Brian subs for Michael, Carl sings all of Michael's leads.
10/3/70   Big Sur Music Festival, Monterey County Fairgrounds, Monterey, CA (40 minutes, soundboard and audience sources)
11/6/70   Whisky A Go-Go, Los Angeles, CA (with The Flame) (55 minutes, audience) - this also has part of the Flame's opening and closing sets.
11/19/70   New Theatre, Oxford, England (55 minutes, audience)
11/20/70   Hammersmith Odeon, London, England (55 minutes, audience)
12/8/70   Gaumont Palace, Paris, France (20 minutes, television)
12/19/70   De Doelen, Rotterdam, Netherlands (18 minutes, radio)
2/24/71   Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (90 minutes, audience)
2/28/71   Symphony Hall, Boston, MA (90 minutes, audience) - David Marks shows up here during Surfer Girl, as he was living in Boston at the time.
3/1/71   The David Frost Show, New York, NY (15 minutes, television) - Forever (a real keeper of a version, too!), Vegetables, and Lady.
4/22/71   JFK Coliseum, Manchester, NH (90 minutes, audience)
4/27/71   Fillmore East, New York, NY (with The Grateful Dead) (35 minutes, soundboard and audience sources) - the Dead's portion of the show (all two and a half hours of it!) also circulates.
5/11/71   Berrigan Brothers Benefit, Manley Field House, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY (90 minutes, soundboard) - circulates in two versions; the first is heavily edited to remove most talk between songs and removes Your Song from the mix; the 90 minute tape is from a lower-generation source and is unedited.
6/27/71   Fillmore East, New York, NY (40 minutes, radio) - the closing night at the Fillmore, broadcast live on WNEW-FM in New York. Notorious for the poor mix (read: Al and Bruce most prominent, Carl in and out, Michael barely audible - of course that's a good thing for some folks!).
7/1/71   Kings Bridge Armory, New York, NY (90 minutes, audience)
7/2/71   Schaefer Music Festival, Wollman Rink, Central Park, New York, NY (18 minutes, television) - the "Good Vibrations From Central Park" ABC-TV show.
9/24/71   Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (85 minutes, audience) - one of the best recordings to be found of them from any era. An embarrassment of riches. "He's in the song!"
10/1/71   Clowes Hall, Butler University, Indianapolis, IN (75 minutes, audience) - the only live performance (loosely put) of the first verse of Pom Pom Play Girl.
11/7/71   McDonough Arena, Georgetown University, Washington, DC (60 minutes, audience) - not incredibly recommended if you can't stomach cuts, but it's a great show.
11/13/71   Dillon Gym, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ (85 minutes, audience)
12/3/71   Long Beach Arena, Long Beach, CA (100 minutes, audience) - Brian comes out to play organ on A Day in the Life of a Tree. The band are laughed at.
2/25/72   Grand Gala Du Disque Populaire, TV RAI Congrescentrum, Amsterdam, Netherlands (20 minutes, television) - the so-called "1973 studio version" of Surf's Up is from this appearance. Bruce, Blondie, and Ricky are present.
3/25/72   St. John’s University, Jamaica, NY (90 minutes, audience) - Bruce, Blondie, and Ricky are present. "You wanna get it straightened out? People are fighting, it's fuckin' stupid!" - Carl Wilson "If anyone wants to fight they can go to Madison Square Garden and get paid for it." - Michael Love
4/2/72     Curtis Hixon Convention Hall, Tampa, FL (100 minutes, audience) - Bruce's last gig until 1978. The "last time" he'd ever sing Disney Girls. Of course we know how that one panned out.
5/9/72   Kongress-Saal im Deutschen Museum, Munich, West Germany (100 minutes, audience)
5/10/72   Concert Hall, Villa de Louvigny, Luxembourg (100 minutes, radio) - to be honest, it's a guy holding a microphone up to the radio speaker, so it sounds like a bad audience recording.
5/13/72   Sportpaleis Ahoy, Rotterdam, Netherlands (85 minutes, audience)
5/27/72   Royal Festival Hall, London, England (90 minutes, audience)
6/3/72   Crystal Palace Bowl, London, England (10 minutes, television) - "Good Vibrations from London".
8/20/72   Allentown Fairgrounds, Allentown, PA (15 minutes, audience) - "If they don't make these girls in the summertime put more clothes on they'll have to outlaw the statutes against rape. That's by no means meant as a warning." - Michael Love
8/21/72   Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY (70 minutes, audience)
8/23/72   Boston Commons, Boston, MA (90 minutes, audience)
11/6/72   University of Georgia Coliseum, Athens, GA (20 minutes, audience)
11/23/72   Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (55 minutes, soundboard)
4/14/73   Pirate’s World, Dania, FL (5 minutes, audience) - most of the gig was never taped due to a number of delays to the gig itself; the recording has Carl singing God Only Knows and Caroline No only with his guitar, and admonishing the rather rude crowd.
5/13/73   Colby College, Waterville, ME (75 minutes, audience)
8/19/73   Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY (95 minutes, audience) - River Song shows up here, and We Got Love and California Girls were used on In Concert.
8/24/73   Dillon Stadium, Hartford, CT (95 minutes, audience) - River Song also is played. One of the best audience recordings you'll ever hear.
11/16/73   Convention Center, Anaheim, CA (100 minutes, audience) - Bruce apparently made a quick stop at this gig in the encore.
12/14/73   The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PA (55 minutes, audience) - Little Saint Nick shows up in the encore.

1974-76 -

3/16/74   Pacific Lutheran University, Tacoma, WA (75 minutes, audience)
