The breaking point as far as when the shows become very sloppy is definitely January 1977 in Lakeland, FL and Largo, MD on 1/7 and 1/12 respectively. As early as late 1974, after Ricky took his leave, the shows were starting to become a little more loose. The 1975 shows in general were very relaxed. 1976 was roughly the same. By 1977, Brian's back on dope, Dennis is getting worse, and Carl is very out of it. Things really begin to spiral. 1978 is even worse. 1979 is when things really get out of control.

Agreed. The difference for It's Ok to Largo is amazing and sad.

MIKE LOVE AND DENNIS WILSON

5/9/74   Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden, New York, NY (5 minutes, audience) - Dennis' contribution is debatable, some folks insist he's here. California Girls and Blowin' In The Wind. The whole gig exists as well, with performances by Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, Phil Ochs, David Van Ronk, and speeches by Dennis Hopper. This was a benefit engagement for Chilean relief in the aftermath of the 1973 USA-sanctioned removal of democratically-elected Chilean president Salvador Allende and the ensuing torture and murder of Victor Jara and thousands of others who supported Allende's socialist policies.

I think this one requires some explaining! What is Mike Love doing at such a rally, considering he seems by most every account to be the sort of person that would not keep the company of folks who are otherwise committed leftist radicals of one kind or another. Was it just because a Beach Boy would help boost some attendance given the time of the concert and the current recuperating status of the Boys as a worthwhile live act? I know Bob Dylan appeared in order to support the cause and to get more people to show up as tickets were not selling very fast, at least. This seems most curious because while I suppose none of the Beach Boys were ever politically active in any way -- they did play Sun City after all -- I would at least have figured Al Jardine more likely to show up for this kind of thing than Mike Love, you know? It's neither here nor there, but I find it most curious -- especially that Dennis may have been there along with Mike (and no other Beach Boys)!

Perhaps I am overly tired... I must sleep on it and hopefully when I wake up this will not be too embarrassing...

In Mike's defense, I doubt it was only left wing radicals who were strongly opposed to Pinochet and his reign of terror! His regime tortured and murdered thousands. His caravan of death would simply burst into homes and drag away sons, brothers, husbands, fathers, and friends never to be seen again. Most suffered hours and days and weeks of torture only to be killed later. Pinochet's coup of Allende was spurned on and bankrolled by Henry Kissinger and Nixon so that American Corporations such as ITT would not be tossed out by Allendea who had planned on Nationalizing all of Chile's industry. It was horrendous and one of the most shameful chapters never to be found in any history book about the USA of A! I know all of this too well because my girlfriend in High School's entire family pretty much had been murdered by Pinochet in Chile!

Sorry to go on a political rant, but I give Kudos to anyone and everyone (Mike included) who signed on for that gig.

Also, sometimes for a musician or singer..... a gig is A GIG!!!!!

The Seattle show from 1970 is really cool to hear Brian's voice, he's still got it.

Shame it's in such poor quality - and shame that we don't have access to the OTHER Seattle shows!

It's a shame how muddy most recordings are. Does anybody know of high quality, soundboards or songs like Surf's Up, Wild Honey, Mess of Help, Big Sur, Tears in the Morning, Here She Comes etc from the early 70s? It kills me that the recording of Tears in the Morning from Big Sur is an audience recording.

There are a few good quality live versions of Surf's Up and Tears i/t Morning floating around, although one call it soundboard. I've heard a very good quality of Surf's Up from the Grand Gala Du Disque (Feb 1972) TV performance... most recordings of that show sound quite muddy. Nu clue where that recording came from.
And then there's the unreleased In Concert single LP (Jan. 1973) with a whole bunch of tracks we'd love to hear live. Heroes And Villains from that album was released on the Endless Harmony soundtrack, but other songs like Wild Honey and Mess Of Help remain unreleased...

EDIT: had to check out what the original line-up of songs was for that single LP:

Side A:
1. Wouldn't It Be Nice
2. Leaving This Town
3. Heroes and Villains
4. Marcella
5. You Need a Mess of Help To Stand Alone
Side B:
1. Let the Wind Blow
2. Do It Again
3. Wild Honey
4. Fun Fun Fun
5. Jumpin' Jack Flash

I like the Beatles a bit more than the Boys of Beach, I think Brian's band is the tops---really amazing. And finally, I'm liberal. That's it.
