Hey! Couldn't write a better subject on this one!

In my opinion there's two songs that especially grows and has their own life when the Beach Boys did / do them live:

- Marcella
- Do It again

You get the idea? Any more?

I like Marcella live. On the 1973 double LP, or in BW's current live setting. In both cases the song is more meaty, menacing even (the One Arm Over My Shoulder section). Superb stuff.

Okay, not a Beach Boys song, but 'Love and Mercy' done with the Harlem Boys choir (on the BW tribute dvd) is phenomenal.

For a Beach Boys song, 'California Girls' on Live @ Knebworth has a great tempo and a fantastic outro.

How about Heroes and Villains?  I think the addition of a backbeat really makes this track rock live.

I was totally going to post the same thing! the 70s cut is so good.

the cut of Darlin' on Knebworth has always amazed me.

Live cuts of Rock and Roll Music and Keepin' the Summer Alive are far superior to their studio cuts.

Barbara Ann - the "Party" version is layed back.  The live version (especially Knebworth and Ed Carter's guitar) rocks.

"Aren't You Glad" - The "Live in London" version sounds like a hit record.  That would have been a great single.

Note - It seems that the live recordings of "Wild Honey" songs that I have heard were superior to the album versions.  Too bad they didn't record that album live a la' "Running On Empty".  There is an intensity to the live "Darlin'" and "Aren't You Glad" that is missing for the WH versions.  WH was suppose to be an R&B album but the production is too laid back. 

"All This is That" - The sax, whether by Charles Lloyd or Rich Caneta makes the song even more ethereal.

Agree with previously posters on "Funky Pretty" and "Marcella".  FP confirms to me that Ricky Faartar was the best drummer the Beach Boys had.  Who plays the lead guitar on "Marcella"?

Hell, most of In Concert manages to make each song rock. Heroes & Villains, Leaving This Town (that solo!), Marcella, You Still Believe In Me, Let The Wind Blow..... I'm just reeling off the track list here  Grin

As an aside, one song that manages to get WORSE during live performances during the 70's is Don't Worry Baby. Al just can't pull it off....

Rhonda kicks major booty on the '73 "In Concert" album. Still probably the best live version of the song that I've heard to this day. Whoever played that searing lead guitar on the bridge (Carl, Steady Eddie, Blondie?) was really rocking that day!!

Yea he really struggles with that one. A bit surprising that they a) had Al sing it in the original key and b) included it on the album.
