Brian and Paul

For years and years Paul McCartney has been a very vocal fan of Brian, and apparently been friends with Brian. He appears sitting next to Brian in that one birthday party video in American Band, he chewed veggies on Smile, and I've also read a story that after Brian premiered Smile Paul went backstage and had a cry with Brian.
However in interviews Brian seems to shy away from their friendship, he downplays it. In one interview, maybe in GIOMH, he corrects the interviewer when he says "friends" and says that he "met him a few times". Is Brian just being modest? Is Paul hyperbolizing their relationship?
Sorry if this has been asked before, but I was just curious.

If you watch the Smile DVD you can actually see the footage of Paul talking to Brian back stage. It didn't show them crying, though.

Apparently Macca went on something like the second or third night of Smile - not the premiere. The documentary edits it to make it look like the premiere. They do hug, kiss, and hang out backstage though.
I honestly don't know about the state of their friendship, though.

All roads lead to Kokomo. Exhaustive research in time travel has conclusively proven that there is no alternate universe WITHOUT Kokomo. It would've happened regardless.

Brian and Paul have had a friendship for a long time.
I will say that the gig they played in 2002 at UCLA at a benefit concert for landmine removal was one of THE great moments of both of their careers. They both played for about 40 minutes each, Brian first, Paul closing. Paul joined Brian for God Only Knows; Brian joined Paul for Let It Be. If you can find the tape, get it. It's amazing.

I'd say its much more of a mutual admiration than a social friendship.

Bob Hanes told a story he was told by Darian on Shut Down that after one of Brian's gigs in 2002 Paul and Brian were opposite at a table and they didn't say anything to each other for a long time just looked at each other. Than Brian broke the silence with "we really do love each other don't we Paul?" and Paul said "Yes Brian, yes we do."

Brian's birthday party clip (June 20, 1976) was orginally featured on the "It's OK" NBC television special in August of 1976 in the U.S. Paul, Linda, and their daughter Heather were at Brian's 34th birthday party at Carl's house in Malibu (or was it at Billy Hinsche's rented house, "Moroccan Roll" in Malibu?) Anybody know if more film footage of that exists?
And of course one of the all-time greatest moments was of Paul introducing Brian at the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame ceremony in 2000, referring to him as "one of the great American geniuses." Did the two of them get together before or after that ceremony?

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Brian looked so miserable at his 34th. My guess is he was given that lovely big chocolate 34 BIG ONES birthday cake, then did a head count and realised how many people he would have to share it with!
BTW did anyone else notice that Mike had
by far
the hottest wife at that time?

4th night, in fact - the original last night. Paul was there with George Martin, and also Peter Blake, as I recall.
See, this is what I mean about the editing of the DVD being despicable - if reasonably well-informed fans here are beginning to believe it...
I really thought better of David Leaf until then.

Tamara was pretty damn nice, but I think I'd give the edge to Karen. Just my preference......dunno if I'd marry her twice but......OK, maybe I would.

Dunno about that, but it was certainly done for reasons other than artistic.
