This isn't important but, as per the liner notes in the two-fers from 1990 (and probably the same notes from 2001), today is the 46th anniversary of the last 'surfing song' ever recorded by the band. "Don't Back Down". Both versions.

So, were they a surfin' band in the studio for roughly 3 years? I doubt much of the public realizes the BB focused such a relatively short amount of time in this genre in the studio.
Here's a related question: did they record their final "car" song around this time?

Well... at a stretch you could say their final car song was "Drive-In", recorded 4/29/64... but a claimant with more weight would be "This Car of Mine", 1/7/64 (or maybe "Fun, Fun, Fun", finished the next day, but started New Year's Day). 'Course, if you're not fussy about the number of wheels, there's always "Little Honda", 4/10/64.

The public knows squat about the BBs in relation to this. Everyone always associates them with surfing and cars, and I'm always having to explain that they didn't even sing about surfing (with rare excptions) past 1964. I blame the beautiful Endless Summer comp...and the Beach Boys themselves, of course.

I think, however, that's a more appropriate association. Boy-Girl relations are timeless and will always be the subject of songs. Plus, they do sing about a lot of ladies.
