So, uhh...
What were the Beach Boys doing on December 6, 1965?
What do you suppose each had for breakfast?

That avocado thing is something I enjoyed on my first visit to the US in 2000. Spent a few days in LA to see Brian at the Hollywood Bowl before heading to Yosemite for a backpacking trip. While wandering around on foot, looking a store that sold gas for my camping stove, I found I was walking along a street named "Fairfax". Recognised it from Help Is On The Way, and realised it'd intersect with "Third", and I could find out where those singing the song ate that night. Sure enough, there was a farmers' market right at the junction.
Can't recall what the menu called it, but that's what I had - an avocado pear, scooped out, stuffed with iceberg lettuce and a dollop of prawns in Ross Marie sauce slopped in. Delicious! Never seen it on a menu anywhere else…
I wonder if I should have washed it down with a Pacifico?

Probably a Pacifico Michelada.
It does sound delicious. But the thought of Bruce, perfectly groomed, in a sunlit breakfast room overlooking the Pacific, sitting down to "avocado pear with prawns in marie rose sauce," no doubt with a folded newspaper and fresh juice awaiting by his plate, while the whole 1960's thing is going down all around him cracks me up!

Today (December 7) is a day of remembrance in the US. As this is the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and people of my parents' time can remember what they were doing when they heard the news, the DJs on the satellite radio asked what other dates were significant.
Of course, December 8 1980 is etched in my brain - how I found out the news that terrible Monday night.
Today others gave what were significant dates for them. One was December 28 1983 and the DJ immediately said, oh yes, Dennis Wilson, then mentioned how Brian had honored his memory last Friday night by singing Forever.
Yesterday another DJ related rather solemnly his memory. He and another DJ were big Beach Boys fans and they heard news that hit them hard. He went home and his wife asked him 'Why are you crying?' And he answered, 'Carl Wilson died!'
Then he played God Only Knows.
I lost it.

Did a recording from that John Lennon event that featured Al singing God Only Knows ever surface on Youtube?

I saw a link over on brianwilson.com yesterday. If someone doesn't before then, I'll post it here tonight (US).
ETA: Just noticed it's posted in the thread 'Al's John Lennon Tribute.'

Darlin' is featured in today's episode of The Big Bang Theory. They played the original track, and mention Brian.

Sheldon has a song stuck in his head that he keeps humming and playing, and cannot get it out. He comes to believe he is going insane. He has a conversation with Leonard and Penny about geniuses who had mental problems, and it went beyond science to art and music. When he mentioned Brian's name, he realized Darlin' was the song he was obsessing over. He later realized he had the song in his head because it expressed how he feels about Amy.

Reading about John Cale, I saw that he recorded but didn't release a cover of "God Only Knows."
Google revealed enough references to this to convince me it's true.
Has anyone ever heard it?

Never even heard about that, but Cale is certainly a major BW fan of many, many years standing. From 1975:

For what it's worth, here are two references to a 1975 version (or versions) by Cale of "GOK":

While listening to "The Man With All The Toys" there is a note that always glaringly stands out to me. It is the guitar playing the melody and you can hear the note about 0:31-0:32 into the song. (The guitarist slides up to an F(?) on the high string.) It is not repeated anywhere else in the song and it sounds like it could be a flub or two notes were hit simultaneously making it sound wonky?

It's as if the guitarist (Carl?) hits the right note first (D#) but unintentionally travels on to E# and then gets back on track with the sustained C# (by way of B-A#-B, if my ears serve me right).

The weird thing is that I am 53 and have heard this song every year for most of my life - many times during the season, several times per day - and never noticed that for the longest time. You cannot unhear it now.
