...it is a mere 24'38" long. I'd never guessed that. Many bands released EPs, 12" singles, etc. longer that that...

...and still it is a classic, albeit a minor one.

I always thought 'Friends' was the shortest one.

and yet... it feels like quite a long record to me.

[especially if you're high/tripping] then it spans ages.

And when you take the three A-sides off, that leaves the other eight songs adding up to about 15 minutes!  A paradigm of minimalism if ever there was one.

After the uncharacteristically (for the Beach Boys) long Pet Sounds, I felt a bit cheated with the shortness of Smiley.

I remember from looking at Andrew's site a while back that there were a few outtakes from the Smiley sessions; has anyone ever heard these, or is there any more information on them?

Personally, I really love this album and the whole period of the group at that time. But, I also wasn't alive at the time it was released to have been dissapointed by SMiLE's non-release.

Which is exactly the condition Brian was in while he made it...remember in the Don Was documentary, he was talking about how "twenty seconds of music sounds like two hours when you're stoned."

3 minutes of repeating "on and on she go dum de doo ba" and "remember the day, remember the night, all day long" probably felt like 5 hours to Brian! Smokin Cool Guy

Any info on Smiley Smile outtakes?

Got this from Brad Elliotts bit in LLVS - apparently they're called 'Hawaiian Song', 'Good News', and 'Good Time Mama', but they haven't been booted. There's also that 'indian wisdom' bit which is probably Smiley-era. One wonders how bad they had to be to avoid inclusion on a 24 minute record....  Huh

Amazing - someone still believes, at this late date, that there's a BB track called "Indian Wisdom".  Shocked

Part of "Hawaiian Song" was used in "Little Pad".

What about that instrumental track with the Spanish guitar called 'Doves of Free"...wasn't that the one that people were calling "Indian Wisdom"?

Slight snag: "GN" is a BW composition. "CTN"... isn't.

Another cool fact: Hunter S. Thompson said that Smiley Smile's "Wind Chimes" was the closest thing he ever heard to a real acid trip put on record.

Niiice!  Shocked Shocked I didn't even think Thompson would've ever paid attention to the BBs. What was he doing in '67 and '68 that was more important than convincing the "hippies"/"hipsters"/"cool people" that the Boys weren't really squares?? LOL LOL

This thought just came to my mind:
Brian didn't want "Good vibrations" on SmileySmile (I think too it doesn't fit, no matter how great it is). So what do you think how many people would've bought it without GV ? I guess some buyers got it only because of that, without listening to the record first.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Well that's why Capitol insisted on it's being included.  That was supposed to be the selling point - milllion selling single on the album.  Too bad it didn't work.  I agree sales would have been even worse without Vibrations on there.

They could've also threw The Little Girl I Once Knew onto SS...it hadn't been on any albums yet.
