Billy Hinsche posted this on Facebook:

Good news for Carl Wilson fans: I've just been asked by Iconoclassic Records to write the new liner notes for Carl's critically acclaimed first solo effort - to be released for the first time on CD sometime this summer ... !

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Was it really critically acclaimed?

Good news though.

I couldn't imagine why it should be. But it has some nice tracks and with "Heaven" a real highlight

I thought that it was only released in Japan? I have never seen one in over 30+ years in the U.S..

Correct. Only a Japanese release on CD from eons ago. Select tracks from each of the solo albums were released on a charity CD from around 2000 or so; I suppose that was technically a US release. But that was extremely limited.

I always felt they should either release both albums on one CD as a two-fer, or, if they were going to do separate releases for each, secure some sort of bonus material. The live 1981 gig at "My Father's Place" that was broadcast on the radio makes the '81 album tracks sound much better. They don't sound as dull and flat as the album versions.

But these indie labels licensing Carl's albums from Sony probably barely have the budget to remaster the actual album master tapes, let alone trying to secure rights and take the time and money to do bonus tracks (whether they're dealing with Sony or Brother or anyone else).

Hopefully they will at least be remastering this from the master tapes and not just re-EQ'ing the Japanese CD release. I recall copious enough liner notes for the "Youngblood" CD reissue that indicated they had gone and done a proper and true remastering.

we need a definitive twofer.   Remastered with added live and studio material.     Then it could be promoted like POB.   Otherwise, I already have these recordings on digital.    They sound pretty good to me.

Great news!

Now we just need to get Mike's stuff reissued on CD, Postcard From California & Imagination on vinyl, bedroom tapes & Sunflower "Deluxe" in whatever format and we'll be in a good spot!

***And not to mention Love You and Adult/Child "Deluxos" - good catch below, CD****

I think unless this thing has bonus tracks, even the hardcores will shy away from it if they already have the Japanese CD and the original album (signed).

A 2-fer with bonus tracks (like the 2008 Dennis release) would be a great idea!

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Dick Clark said some nice things about it as well as the dance show that was on in the 80's

There was also a radio broadcast of a show from the Bottom Line - and I agree, the concert versions really brought some fire to those songs.

I would think very few of us have the Japanese cd. The only reason I ever saw a copy of that was because we had a store in my town that specialized in import cd's - and they were not cheap!

I became a fan in 1991, and it took me a few years to complete my BB on CD collection. I managed to secure the Youngblood Japanese CD, Bruce's Going Public & Surfin Round The World Japanese CDs, even Blondie's solo album on Japanese CD. I even got the CD release of POB, still straddled in the longbox, many years after it was out of print. The missing link was Carl's first album. I had a bootleg Twofer with decent sound, but I really wanted the real thing. Now, decades later, it's happening!

I found both of the Japanese released CD's at a record show in Clark NJ, years ago, in the early 90's. I think it cost me about $50 for the pair. Always glad I purchased them both, for obvious reasons. Liner notes were in Japanese though, so I'm looking forward to the release. I also have the charity CD that was released in 2000; that was from the Cancer Society and cost $100. Great charity too.

I got both when they first came out on CD.  Guess the value of my Carl Wilson cd will plummet!

Billy H posted on FB a while back that a quality unreleased Carl track had been found…  maybe this will be the excuse they need to get it out there.
