I wouldn't be asking this normally but it seems to happen rather a lot on Brian's Facebook page.  With regard to photographs posted, I was wondering who actually posts those photos and what Brian Wilson/Beach Boys knowledge do they have 'cause it seems to me that they're often very wrong with their dates.  I know, silly little gripe it is, but here it is is!   Roll Eyes

STAY AWAY FROM THAT PAGE. The comments on it, dear god, the comments. Let me pull some now, at random.

I am disappointed in you Mike! Please read some of the articles that are out on this movie. Look at the Sea World trainers that were deceived and misquoted etc. that are standing up against the movie. It is so biased. You have been to Sea World. Saw you there last year. You must realize that they do so much good. Without places like this we would not know about these creatures. Because of zoos, parks like SW, and aquariums laws have been passed to help keep animals from becoming extinct. Talk to Jack Hannah, talk to Dawn's mom. She does not back the film or the fact that they used her daughter in it. She was at Sea World sitting just a few rows from me this last Saturday for Sea world's Wild Weekend. Her daughter loved what she did and would hate seeing this movie and the damage it has caused. Well sort of caused, SW has highest attendance this year and most profit which means more rescues can continue on our beaches. When you are in Melbourne talk to people here that actually see the good SW does."

"Beatles have their spot in history....but the Beach Boys will always be number one...i mean seriously was their ever a more asinine song than yellow submarine??? lol"

"Jeez, Mike, you look like a cast member of Duck Dynasty."

"I love your song about George man"

NOOO.

I'm joking of course, but I have seen some really crazy sh*t posted over there!

Woodstock - surely you jest about suggesting people don't read Mike's Facebook page.  It is sort of "newsy" in terms of the Touring Band, and events they are involved in, along the way.  Interesting the overriding stuff these days, centers around fan requests for the Touring Band to do a show "in my town." And it shows the huge popularity of the Touring Band. Mike also has some interesting vintage photos that fans seem to really enjoy.

Those marine parks are a mixed blessing it seems, and the history of whaling, generally is tied to slavery, animal cruelty, and the positions that people now hold might be different from a few years ago because they have more information. The interest in dolphins surged in the 1960's with the TV show Flipper.

But, there can be value in teaching children about sea life in a way that is both accessible to them and generally less harmful to the animals.  The issues are many.

Once a "message is sent," industry people become motivated to find a solution that fits both bills.   Wink

I assume Michael DeMartin runs Brian's FB and Twitter. He got the job running Brian's website due to running his own elaborate, expensive I looking fan site, packed with article reprints and photos. Yes, he is a very knowledgeable fan.

Examples?
He's been repeatedly off the mark with the respective years the posted photos were allegedly taken. To cut him some slack: most of those were late 60s pictures of Brian - '66/'67 and '68/'69 photos of Brian are particularly difficult to date. I know that from experience. Nevertheless..

I'm going to say it's definitely Michael DeMartin, because of the things posted on his public Designsite (the name of his web design company) Facebook page. He posted that he was the one who created the Pharrell/Brian hat Photoshop pic, and he also put together the Q & A chat on Brian's Facebook page a few weeks ago.  Maybe Michael was given the photos by Brian or others and they supplied the dates, and he simply posted the dates as he was given them.

That may be. I honestly don't know who DeMartin is and I don't know who's running Brian's Facebook page, either. My previous post should have read "Whoever is running Brian's Facebook page has been repeatedly off the mark with...". Smiley I'm thankful to whoever it is, though. Now and then some neat stuff turns up or is featured there (for example those hitherto unreleased 80s background vocals).

Be it Michael DeMartin (never heard this name) or Brian's geek neighbor - doesn't matter, if you do such important job to one of the greatest figures in music industry, you MUST check the stuff that you post. It ain't no difficult to find the correct dates, contact Mr. Rusten if anything, many possibilities. So no need to defend the guy to the point it sounds ridiculous. My 50 cents, as usual.

So in RangeRover world, when Melinda gives you a picture and says "This is from 1969" RangeRover says "No you're wrong, it's from 1967" ?

That's why RangeRover doesn't run Brian's facebook page.

For those who don't know who Michael DeMartin is, he used to run a Brian Wilson fan website called Pet Sounds. This was a few years before Brian had his own website. It was a very expensive-looking website where Michael archived a lot of Brian and Beach Boys articles, photos, and other media. I think it may have also had a fan message board, though I can't remember. Brian and his management took notice of the website and were so impressed with Michael's work that they hired him to be the designer of Brian's own website and message board. Michael is also in charge of Brian's Facebook and Twitter pages.

And rightfully so. I mean, if I were one of Brian's acolytes, would I really choose to be the one behind-the-scenes doing all the boring job typing in data on his facebook, uploading pics without even checking them (thanks, Lowbacca, you're very attentive!)? Or, I'd rather be in a band full of talented musicians, singing along having fun, you name it? Exactly, 2nd option all the way.

That Michael DeMartin independent site had a certain tone... "Inflamatory" would be the word. There was an interview with Andy Paley (i think) where some beans were spilled about the real involvement of Brian in the works that brought his signature.

Interesting that this same guy was hired by teh wifeandmanagers. Keep your friends close, keep your enemies even closer.

The veracity of some of Andy's comments about his collaboration with Brian are highly suspect. The interview was posted in a time when Brian was releasing Imagination rather than the Paley tracks, so there was some score-settling going on.

All that being said, the website wasn't really that inflammatory. It was just not super thrilled with the Imagination project, IIRC. He went out of his way to praise Brian's first solo shows with the more stripped down versions of the Imagination songs, for example.

The Andy Paley interview is the main thing I remember from that website. It had a lot of good info, even if it was colored by perception and not enough time having passed since its demise.

I guess time has coloured my memory. But I remember a general feeling of 'if only Brian had the freedom to do whatever he chose to do, he'd come up with another Pet Sounds / Smile / Love You". That kind of crap. We know better now, thank God.

TLOS was a good album. I fully support the notion of enjoying what Brian delivers, insted of waiting for what he "should" be doing or "could" be doing.

How are Andy's comments highly suspect? He wrote all of "In My Moondreams," which is an instrumental, and released on some compilations as Brian Wilson as artist and co-writer. Brian himself said in an interview that Andy wrote most of "Soul Searchin'" IMO, neither of those songs even sounds particularly Brian-ish. Maybe that's why Melinda banned Andy, not only due to the interviews he gave where he took perhaps justifiable credits, but that Brian was not trying hard enough. Which I suspect is what happens in situations like that, Brian was letting himself coast.
