Judd, just so you know, it's Brupublicans not Johnstinas, Carlista not McCarls, Marks Mafia not Marksmen, and Flamers not Blondiethons or Fataarmymen!

Otherwise, loving your set-up! I hope Dennistas and Jarheads have a peaceful alliance for the future  Cheesy

Goin' To The Beach should have been added  Angry Angry Angry

I'm going to vote for it anyway.

This forum is officially the greatest forum of all-time!

What's next? SIP Mike's signature saying "It's A Genuine Fact That Kokomaoists Rule!" or Juice Bronston's signature saying "It's A Genuine Fact That Brupublicans Rule!"

Which brings me to my next point: Guys, it's BRUPUBLICANS, NOT JOHNSTINAS! BRUPUBLICANS!!!

But since there isn't a General Consensus, vote here:

This has been the hardest survivor final for me so far.  All three of these songs are great...an indication how much excellent music they made during this period.

At least for now, I am going with WIBNTLA.  Since I assume three-way ties are not allowed.

Edit:  And just an aside...two of these weren't even released for decades!  Incredible.

Edit:  Changed to Breakaway.  But it pretty much depends on the last one I listen to.  Great, great songs.

You don't have to be a 'Brianista' to think that "Live Again" is magnificent but that "Break Away" is even better. And it doesn't "just end", it ends with a completely new section in true BBs style.

The fade is lovely but hardly Surf's Up. Al himself is on record as saying it feels a little under-powered, as if Brian couldn't be bothered delivering the production goods anymore. Now WIBNTLA - that ends with a completely new section in true BB's style. I'm surprised you could make that comment without realising as such.

Breakaway gets my vote. It's the last real pop single Brian wrote, an end of a era. I can even forgive the tag fading far too soon.

Here's the thing about WIBNTLA; I'd be a lot more knocked out by it if I hadn't already heard
Cuddle Up
I've Got a Friend
Love Remember Me
Barbara.

A good 50% of the song seems to have been lifted from or recycled for the above songs.

I don't really hear that, unless I make a really conscious effort to do so, and even then no, I don't really hear it. I mean a lot of Brian's 1963-65 output sounds similar - doesn't stop it being great.

I think this is going to be the first round where I strongly disagree with the outcome. I mean, Christ, what's going to win the L.A. Light album round - Shortenin' Bread?

(That last line was a joke - kind of...)

Agreed. Also, being similar to other songs isn't a reason to vote against it.
I think Good Timin' will win the Light Album round, judging by the results of this round. Trust me, the Brianistas will make sure one of Brian's songs will win no matter what. You'll see...

Yes, I know WIBNTLA also ends in a completely new section. As do hundreds of BBs songs, hence "in true BBs style". The whole point is I'm not criticising WIBNTLA (which I love)! I'm defending Break Away from your criticisms. As to what Al said- a well-known quote as it was featured in the twofer liner notes- I think people have taken it too much on board and let it affect the way they hear the song. Obviously Al was very disappointed it wasn't a hit, but it WAS a hit in the UK, and it'd have been in a hit in the U.S. too if the Beach Boys weren't such box office poison at the time.

Breakaway whenever I play the chords of this song on my guitar I cant help but think what if Brian had been
able to break loose from the destructive lifestyle choices of that time, and if the song had just gotten traction to
place a top spot in the charts -- would that have given him that hope?

If you are torn between any two of these songs, please vote for breakaway it deserves your vote!

Nope. WIBNTLA deserves your vote.

WIBNTLA is one of Denny's best songs, as well as one of the best songs the BB's ever made.
As good as Breakaway is, it's not even one of Brian's best songs, and falls far short of WIBNTLA. Same with Soulful Old Man Shunshine.

Breakaway and SOMS are neither half as powerful or beautiful as WIBNTLA!

Obviously the Brianistas disagree, as they must have Brian's songs win every single round.

This is such a frustrating sentiment.

Your entire message was pure opinion, but you present it as though it's fact. If anybody sees it different than you, it's because they're wrong and they have some grudge against Dennis. We're just all Brianistas who can't bear to think that a Dennis song should receive a single vote.
When, in reality, we all have different opinions. I don't think it's one of the best songs they did. It's alright, but the legacy of the song and its ties to Dennis make you vote for this song. Which is exactly what you attack "Brianistas" for doing.

Perhaps I don't drool over this song like you do, and I find "Soulful Old Man Sunshine" to be a more pleasant, enjoyable listen. Is that okay with you?

If WIBNTLA was written by anyone else, I'd still say the same thing. It's just a mind-blowing, staggeringly majestically powerful song and the fact that it doesn't even have half as many votes as Breakaway is Bullshit in my opinion

Don't get me wrong, Breakaway is also a brilliant song, and it deserved to make it to the finals, same for Shunshine. But neither aren't nearly as good as WIBNTLA, and I'm just shocked that it's not a landslide win like Little Girl I Once Knew on the other thread, let alone being beaten by a song which isn't even one of Brian's best

Man, if you get so frustrated over someone having a different opinion from yours, I don't think hanging around message boards is such a good idea. Seriously. I'm not a 'brianista' and I'm not even sure what it means, but I hate to be called one over and over again by you just because I happen to think Breakaway is an amazing song.  Tootsie's post is well-stated and reflects my feelings too, so I don't wanna repeat what he said. Please read it again and try to drop the childish attitude.

We are bordering on pissing off pixletwin again, using this thread to discuss "other non-voting" stuff (but is at least about a Finals Track)...Even thought about taking it to the Mainstream Arguments Thread...But it's here so I feel I must give Bubbly (not about to start calling you Tootsie Rollin' Deep, that's just...) a thumbs up.  What you are saying is "On Point!"  And Mike's Beard is saying something that all you "Dennisistas" should note.  Dennis got everything Right with "Cuddle Up"...just needed a little more work (and better lyrics Rei, but thanks for posting).  "(WIBNT)LA" should have been worked into a Suite linking the other Carl and The Passions - So Tough tracks, using other Dennis "bits" of the time.  I'm still working on a CATP-ST re-do comp.  I'll post it in an appropriate place when done.
...and again, sorry for hijacking the thread.  I'm in too much of a rant-y mood this morning.  peace

My intention is to vote for whichever track gets enough votes to push the dismal Soulful Old Man Sunshine out. Can't believe San Miguel and Celebrate The News are gone. This for me has been the most frustrating of the Survivor rounds.

Anyway enough of my moaning. I will vote for Breakaway.

Surely if (like me) you can't believe San Miguel and Celebrate the News are gone, why not help keep the Dennis flame aloft by voting for WIBNTLA? Smiley

Soulful is ok but rather over-praised on here. It certainly isn't better than San or Celebrate that's for sure...

This is a difficult selection for me.. aarrgh.  Both songs have their pros and cons.

Breakaway sounds great but I do feel it is missing something.  I can't quite put my finger on exactly what that is, but it doesn't feel done.  Maybe a soaring Brian falsetto at the end would have given me a sense of completion.

In my opinion WIBNTLA features the best Dennis vocal on record.. I mean he truly sounds like a Wilson brother.  Just a fantastic performance.  However, the ending is a little bit of a disappointment for me.. I was expecting some over the top harmonies or something.  The rest of the song is excellent though and what a joy to finally get the opportunity to hear it!

So for me it's a 90% completed Brian tune that had great potential vs a fully realized Dennis masterpiece with minor flaws.

My vote goes to Wouldn't it be nice to live again.

You've nailed Breakaway perfectly there... Love it, but it's jeee-ust not quite as great as it should be.
