(NOT A VOTE POST, PIXLETWIN). I realize "That's Not Me" may not be one of the strongest tracks, but I'm surprised to see it getting voted out so early. To me, that is one of those tunes that embodies the "Pet Sounds mentality" - one of the reasons this album changed my life and changed my perspective on other music and society. The instrumentation isn't sparse - I love the abstract floor hits from Dennis, and the way the tambourine alternately contrasts those hits. It's got that infamous plucked guitar and bass sound - the one that everyone goes for when they try to do a PS soundalike. The lyrics! Haven't you ever done something on your own, been scared, and realized it's not for you? You wanna go back to the way things were? Maybe you can, maybe you can't....And finally, Mike's vocals. They might not be perfect, they might not be beautiful - but they are so suited to this song. For a guy who might not have been enthused with the sessions, he puts his heart and soul into it and there's undeniable emotion and attachment in his voice. The harmony swell going into the bridge is sublime, and the vocal take-over from Mike to Brian is a moment of bliss.

Yeah.

Yeah! It's the best song on Pet Souds, IMO.  Actually, IMHO, That's not me is a bottle version of Pet Sounds in its entirety.

Could be out next round, tho'...

Whatevs, the deal is to vote for "your" (ie, you) least fav; suck it up if the poll results aren't too your liking.

That goes doubly for those english boys who can't bring 'em 'selves to cast a vote.  You know what Mike Love would say...

Yeah.

Great post. However it is a post that could probably be made for every track on Pet Sounds. It's a beautiful and nearly flawless album. I think at different points in time nearly every track has been a favorite of mine. That is what is making the voting so interesting.

@Alan, we are agreed on the English boys thing.  It's almost has if they think the Sonic Police are going to crash in their brains and take away any enjoyment they ever had from a song they vote off. Razz

Hearing the isolated vocals from the PS box set is really something. For all of the beauty in the harmonies and orchestration through the whole album, the song with just a couple instruments and one voice really is wonderful - and effective.

I read a Rolling Stone article from 1966 criticizing the album for it's lush nature throughout...maybe they didn't hear this one?

I've always thought of it as a perfect counterpoint to the rest of the the songs.

That's Not Me

I love that it features the Boys on the backing track but (maybe because of that) compared to the rest of the album, it sounds very sparse and out of place.  Also the ending just kinda goes away (to the city?) and feels kind of weak.

Are YOU off YOUR meds voting for the second best song* on the album, EcoHanger?

That's Not Me

Beautiful, but it just goes... nowhere...

wot? The contrast between Mike and Brian's parts was always totally unexpected, to me, as was the ending. Holy sh*t, that ending.
