They had a few performances by all the big groups of the 60's...(Byrds,Temptations,Beatles,Beach Boys and many more) and they also were offering 5 discs of big hits for $150 (many number 1's)
The weird thing about this all is they included Darlin'...I was shocked that they added that song instead of Good Vibrations,Surfer Girl or one of their bigger known hits.
Did any of you see this program? It was on Pbs.

I saw this just the other night and was thinking the same thing.  My initial reaction was "Now that's an odd choice for a comp like this".  But as I think about it, I'm guessing (hoping, actually) that perhaps this era of the Beach Boys is finally getting out in the mainstream.

Yeah it caught me off guard I was barely playing attention to it and when I seen Darlin I was WTF!!!! Lol (It woke me up lol) Even though I enjoy that era I hope it doesn't get that much shine because it'll hurt the Beach Boys image even more and I like that the casual audience views them as sunny and harmonious singers.

Their image is what it is.. and it depends on who is doing the viewing Wink   I think It's a good thing, Darlin' is a FANTASTIC song,  hopefully people buy the set, listen to Darlin', like it, look up what album it is from and from there discover a new BB world of music they didn't know about.

That will scare them away from the BB's just like it did for my girlfriend and close buddies at first.

When I was growing up, Darlin' was one of the BB songs I heard most frequently on the radio.

Wow I'm surprised it actually received any radio play.

It's a great song Newguy!  but each to their own.  You said it scared off your friends?  Well I loved it straight away.

Not really, Darlin' got to No. 19 on the US top 100 chart. It got to 11 in the UK and 28 in Australia.

After H&V charted at No. 12, Darlin' coming in at 19 was the BBs highest single until R&R Music got to 5 in 1976.

I actually grew to love the song but it just doesn't sound like the type of beach boys song that would be a hit. (I'm more surprised that Wild Honey wasn't a smash single.)

I think there's more going on sometimes than we're privvy to.  I've heard Darlin' on musak a few times recently... like playing at Wal-mart, or on a computer-ran oldies station here locally, etc.

It could be as simple as the record company cut a deal on royalties for some of their songs and that was the best one, lol.  Or maybe they licensed it to Musak, and the compilation they're selling on t.v. is a compilation of the Musak titiles that company has access to, or something.

I think it's a great song, though.  Carl sounds awesome on it.

I'ts been pointed out, time and time again, too, that Carl could sing that sucker like that even up to his last shows.  He went out on top.  The way he sang that "With more Soul than I've Ever Had!" line!  Wow.  That f*cker burnt out, in a good way.  Burn bright, then burn the f*** out.

Gotta Love Carl Wilson.

I really think it just disappeared from the radio/radar for 25 years. No idea why.

Darlin' is in probably in my top ten favorites of the BB's whole catalog.  That being said, during the 90's and beyond (I became a fan in 1991), I think I heard Darlin' once, MAYBE twice on oldies radio.  It seemed like a forgotten gem.  I was aware that they were still including it in their concert setlists, and I still remember in 1994, when I first saw them live, feeling a little uncomfortable when they played Darlin', thinking that 99% of the audience didn't know what it was, and that Carl would be discouraged by the tepid response (looking back I doubt it bothered him...it was one of those songs they kept playing no matter what).  I remember feeling at the time that the Beach Boys were out of touch with what songs people were familiar with...either that or they were throwing the hard core fans a bone or two, with Rock And Roll Music and Come Go With Me in the mix.

Wasn't Darlin a huge hit in Great Britain? #1 or #2? Was this infomercial perhaps made there?

Darlin' peaked just outside the top ten - still a pretty good placing. Other songs by them that may be considered obsure by Americans but were big hits over here were Breakaway, Cottonfields, I Can Hear Music, Lady Lynda and of course Do It Again which hit #1.

BTW Kokomo was only a moderate hit here.

Isn't it weird how chart positions are so radically different in every country? Here in The Netherlands for instance, The Beach Boys had no top 10 hits at all prior to Sloop John B - but then Sloop John B, Good Vibrations, Then I Kissed Her, Do It Again, Bluebirds, I Can Hear Music, Tears in the Morning (!) all made the top 10. Even Student Demonstration Time and You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone made the top 40 here.

On most 60s- flower power compilations the only Beach Boys song I frequently see is "I can hear music". Sometimes "Good vibrations"

a diseased bunch of mo'fos if there ever was one… their beauty is so awesome that listening to them at their best is like being in some vast dream cathedral decorated with a thousand gleaming American pop culture icons.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

I think that was just silly...that was never a major hit...and sure it sounds pretty good but doesn't have the sound that the radio was looking for that's why it wasn't even a hit for the Ronettes when they were on the top.
