I Can Hear Music was a Top 40 hit. I heard it many times on LA radio in the 80's.

They had a few performances by all the big groups of the 60's...(Byrds,Temptations,Beatles,Beach Boys and many more) and they also were offering 5 discs of big hits for $150 (many number 1's)
The weird thing about this all is they included Darlin'...I was shocked that they added that song instead of Good Vibrations,Surfer Girl or one of their bigger known hits.
Did any of you see this program? It was on Pbs.

On most 60s- flower power compilations the only Beach Boys song I frequently see is "I can hear music". Sometimes "Good vibrations"
LOL You serious? I Can Hear Music?

Yep. Seriously.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Yet everyone  knows that song.
How the f*** are you gonna compare a minor cover hit like that to a masterpiece like Track of My Tears?!!!!

Tracks of My Tears hit #2 R&B, #16 Pop. "Smash" hit is subjective, but whatever. I Can Hear Music was a hit, get over it.

Its a no brainer that I Can Hear Music was a hit, catchy production and singing of a spector classic.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

Wasn't Darlin a huge hit in Great Britain? #1 or #2? Was this infomercial perhaps made there?

Darlin' peaked just outside the top ten - still a pretty good placing. Other songs by them that may be considered obsure by Americans but were big hits over here were Breakaway, Cottonfields, I Can Hear Music, Lady Lynda and of course Do It Again which hit #1.

BTW Kokomo was only a moderate hit here.

Isn't it weird how chart positions are so radically different in every country? Here in The Netherlands for instance, The Beach Boys had no top 10 hits at all prior to Sloop John B - but then Sloop John B, Good Vibrations, Then I Kissed Her, Do It Again, Bluebirds, I Can Hear Music, Tears in the Morning (!) all made the top 10. Even Student Demonstration Time and You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone made the top 40 here.
Article on Cotton Fields from Wikipedia:

While barely making a dent in the U.S. (#95 Record World, #103 Billboard) though promoted with an appearance on the network TV pop show Something Else, the song succeeded across the Atlantic, reaching number two in the UK's Melody Maker chart and listed as the tenth biggest seller of the year by the New Musical Express. Worldwide — outside North America — it virtually replicated the success of the group's "Do It Again" two years before. It was number 1 in Australia, South Africa, Sweden and Norway, number 2 in Denmark, number 3 in Ireland, similarly top 5 in the United Kingdom, Japan, Spain and Rhodesia; number 12 in Holland, number 13 in New Zealand and number 29 in Germany. Because of this popularity, it was placed on the international (ex-US) release of the group's Sunflower album.

This used to be a place for knowledgeable, veteran Beach Boys fans to discuss the finer points and lesser-known details on the band's career. Now it just seems to be a place where any random teenager can wander in, start juvenile topics, argue over common knowledge, etc. I wish there were a hidden forum  on the board that you could enter only after passing a quiz. If there was something like that, I'd surely spend all my time there.

Excellent idea! Anyone wishing to converse with me must first answer these questions three....

What was the exact time and date that Mike Love was officially declared bald?
How many times has Bruce Johnston mentioned in interviews that Mike wrote the lyrics for California Girls?
True or False? Blondie and Ricky can be considered official former members of the group.

Anyone who can't get these correct is not worthy to smell the stink off my sh*t.

Phil Spector is the asshole/genius that is extremely dismissive of Brian Wilson and looks down upon him like he isn't the musical giant that he is!
I respect what he did for music but whenever I listen to most of his work it just reminds me of how much he tried to imitate Motown.

Name one Spector record where he is imitating Motown. Spector's sound was actually a major influence upon Holland-Dozier-Holland.

His combinations of instruments, his definitive usages of echo and reverb, and the martial, angry grooves of his records sound nothing like the Motown Sound. What the Motown thing did was inspire him to develop and progress into his OWN thing. Lovin' Feeling sounds nothing like Motown. If one had to compare it to another musical scene, it would be Chicago or New York.
Brian Wilson may be obsessed with Spector, but does Don't Worry Baby sound anything like a Spector record?

Newguy, you need to learn to respect people around here instead of insulting them for not agreeing with you. Your myopic view of rock and roll is shameful to say the least.
