It's still a fabulous album, though. Don't let your opinion be skewed by its audience (current, original, or any in-between or yet to come). To me it is the most powerful album of the past 25 years, at least as far as I can recall off the top of my head.

Object to as opposed to just dislike? That's a pretty interesting and strong statement. I'd love to hear more.

As for the last track, I don't find it boring at all, which is funny in that I'm a pop-song lover: once something gets more than about 2:45, 3:00, I start getting pretty antsy. For me, the atmosphere (kudos to R. Schneider for his production and the band), the lyrics, and Mangum's oddly glorious bleating voice* do the trick.


*It almost reminds me of that type of church singing where the congregation sings in parts, but not with the nuance or vibrato of traditional western singing. I can't think of what they call it, but basically they just bust out the notes, full force. It has a similar timbre to Mangum's.

I love the lyrics. I mean, I have no idea what most are about, but for me it's all about how they fit in with the music and how they are sung. Every visual image they paint seems to carry such emotion for the protagonist, like he's singing about the darkest of the moments he's been through, like he's revealing everything there is to know about himself and you can hear the pain he's going through to to achieve that. And then the truth comes out, but it's not what you expect - it's confused and twisted in a million forms. The protagonist is even more emotionally damaged than the one in say, Pet Sounds, but he can't even put his finger properly on what it is that's confusing him and that he has to deal with (his childhood? religion and spirituality? Anne Frank's story?). I agree with captain that it's a very, very powerful record, perhaps next to only 'Definitely Maybe' in my list of favourite 90's alums.

With the news that the recently reunited That Dog. is making a new album, I am going back through their '90s output.  One of my favorite bands - nothing hits the spot like hard-charging overdriven power pop centered around three-part female vocal harmonies and a guitar/bass/drums/violin lineup.
