IIRC, that's a Sunflower promo shot. That picture makes me sad. Even though it's in black and white you can still his skin looks rough and he's got those big bags under his eyes. Too much smoke and not enough sleep or quality nutrition. It's really too bad no one could have helped him at this stage.

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Damn Foskett for not knowing the chords for This Whole World.

Although it did yield the great quote from Brian: "Bruce! Get your ass on the piano and play it!"

Actually I think Brian looks great in this picture. He looks pretty slim and alert. 1969-70 was a cool period for him to be honest.

That picture was from the early 70's Warner/Reprise Beach Boys press kit.

The autograph definitely looks like a fake to me!

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears, and she's already working on my brain. I only looked in her eyes, but I picked up something I just can't explain. I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

Facsimile implies that it at least looks a little like a real autograph: that one isn't even close !

I don't think it's an actual attempt at forging Brian's signature - if you look in Badman's book it has all the publicity photos from the same era the handwriting is the same for each individual band member...

Correct. Also, Mike's looks waaaaaaay worse than Brian's. Carl's is odd, too, since it looks like it was randomly taken mid-sentence... You'd think they'd at least use *good* pictures...

Brian had bags under his eyes when he was really young, in the "Pet Sounds" pics and before that. I don't think it had anything to do with how he took care of himself, it was a hereditary tendency to have fatty bags like Bill Clinton's heavy lower eye bags. The bags were later removed by a plastic surgeon when he was under Landy's care. They also operated on his upper eyelids and got rid of the folds that made his eyes almond-shaped (the way Carnie Wilson's still look).

You don't really see the bags though until he started smoking. Cigarette smoke is hell on your skin. It's starting around this time in pictures, and perhaps a little earlier, I start to see a physical decline. He's not unhealthily heavy yet, but his face starts to look swollen. Not fat, but swollen, and that emphasizes those bags, making them look deeper and darker. If one of my clients looked like that I would check their electrolyte balance and anti-oxidant levels. Anti-oxidant deficiencies were hereditary too, Carl suffered from gout which is, at it's root, a vitamin E deficiency, exaggerated by excessive alcohol intake, since alcohol interferes with your body's ability to absorb fat soluble vitamins. At this point, Brian was still motivated and productive and it just makes me sad that no one was able to provide him with the help he needed to stay that way at the first sign of problems.
