Brian had bags under his eyes when he was really young, in the "Pet Sounds" pics and before that. I don't think it had anything to do with how he took care of himself, it was a hereditary tendency to have fatty bags like Bill Clinton's heavy lower eye bags. The bags were later removed by a plastic surgeon when he was under Landy's care. They also operated on his upper eyelids and got rid of the folds that made his eyes almond-shaped (the way Carnie Wilson's still look).

You don't really see the bags though until he started smoking. Cigarette smoke is hell on your skin. It's starting around this time in pictures, and perhaps a little earlier, I start to see a physical decline. He's not unhealthily heavy yet, but his face starts to look swollen. Not fat, but swollen, and that emphasizes those bags, making them look deeper and darker. If one of my clients looked like that I would check their electrolyte balance and anti-oxidant levels. Anti-oxidant deficiencies were hereditary too, Carl suffered from gout which is, at it's root, a vitamin E deficiency, exaggerated by excessive alcohol intake, since alcohol interferes with your body's ability to absorb fat soluble vitamins. At this point, Brian was still motivated and productive and it just makes me sad that no one was able to provide him with the help he needed to stay that way at the first sign of problems.

I think he was smoking pretty early on if not to his voice detroying 1973-83 level. I have a 1964 pic where it looks like he has a pack rolled up in his sleeve.

Yea, I think 1964 was when he would have started. I know Carl started smoking earlier, (like 1963?) because there are stories about him getting in trouble at school.

Probably before '63 as Carl started smoking in his early teens.

Does this mean Carl was something of a rebel?

Maybe he did well to keep his habit from Murry.

Yes it was taken during the Sunflower sessions. I agree it's a fantastic period and my favorite LP too.
