Just bought 3 at Target to do my part.
(2 as gifts to spread the wealth.)
God bless you. I'm tempted to buy another just to have another. Could more album sales throughout the week help push this towards number 2?
uh...yes. The numbers today are projections based upon first day sales. Sales throughout the week will be counted in the total numbers.
I realize that. I suppose I phrased that wrong. This website makes it seem that first day sales really determine what will chart where. I'm saying, will there be significant sales throughout the week that will propel TWGMTR forward? More of a, what do you think question. I'm not that slow.
Gotcha. Don't think anybody knows for sure. I would say that all of Jackson, Adele and the Boys biggest sales were in day 1 or pre-sale (for Jackson and BBs). The Boys should get a boost after Leno tonight, as they did in pre-sales after Fallon. They should get an extra boost after the QVC sales are added in. Every extra sale helps. I am starting to sounding like Dr. Love here...

Leno tonight ought to really help. I just want to beat Alan Jackson. How can America's Band lose to this guy. That ain't right.

Not that I am defending him, but here are where his 7 studio albums have charted since 2000:
Year - US Country - US Billboard 200
2000 - 1 - 15
2002 - 1 - 1
2004 - 1 - 1
2006 - 1 - 4
2006 - 1 - 4
2008 - 1 - 1

Yeah, he's actually the 15th highest selling artist of the last decade. He sells a lot, so it's going to be tough. But it's possible.

I realize the guy sells albums and from what I hear they're not half bad, it just seems that such a monumental, historic release from America's band would illicit more sales than yet another album from a country artist.

Amazing that a guy could have 3 number one albums on the mainstream charts--just since the year 2000--yet I've never heard one of his songs. I'm not complaining, of course.
Someone asked if iTunes counted towards sales, to which I'd say they have to. An educated guess would be that a large chunk, if not the majority, of album sales are digital nowadays. Still, if you're just buying copies to help the Boys, you might as well buy physical copies then return them unopened after a couple of weeks. I don't see how a place like iTunes or even Amazon could take a return on an mp3 download. And obviously no one could possibly want or even use multiple mp3 purchases of the same thing.

Itunes and other downloads count towards the album charts, as long as it's a full album download. As for the QVC sales, no idea if they will count towards the first week total.

uh...yes. The numbers today are projections based upon first day sales. Sales throughout the week will be counted in the total numbers.
...and they're flawed. Adele had a special on Sunday night so the sales of her album were up Monday and Tuesday because people went out and bought it. If you base numbers on that, you're likely to assume that she'll sell strong all week, but why would she when the uptick is because of a television special that aired Sunday?
She still may pull it out, but it's not an easy projection.

BTW, to show how falliable this all is: A week ago, they predicted John Mayer would sell 50-60% of his first week's 220K. This week, while he did gain the top spot again, he only sold 67,000 records. So they were off by about 20%.
They base their predictions on what indy shops tell them they sold the first day (yesterday) of the week. Like mentioned, Adele moved more albums than normal monday and tuesday because she had a concert on television Sunday.

The sale on Amazon for $4.99 will help, big time I think (it's the #1 album there right now). Also, doesn't sound to me like the QVC sales are included either.

Something I was curious about...Are major artists like The Beach Boys allowed to sell their albums at their concerts? At the Bethlehem show, Al and David had CD's for sale at the merchandise booth. Can/will The Beach Boys do the same? Do you realize how many they could sell at $7.99 or $9.99 which is what Amazon was charging.
SJS -- Again, I'm going from when I was engaged in the industry years ago, but in the '90s S.O.P. was that major labels did not want nor did they allow the product to be sold at the venues. Reasons for this are complicated but it comes down to the fact that they, and not the band, own the record...this is not the same as Al and Dave who own their masters (or have leased them to a small label that's delighted to have the opportunity to sell through at the venues), and are going to get direct financial benefit back from the CDs. There's also the issue with Soundscan. There is a way to count sales at venues through Soundscan, but it's a bit of a cumbersome process most big labels don't want to bother with.
The way it's generally worked is product the band owns or leases is sold at the venues, outside product is sold at stores that are strategically tied in marketing-wise to the tour dates. I'm sure there are exceptions, but that's the deal. Someone with more industry mojo can probably get into the whys and wherefores.
Good post, but just to clarify, The Beach Boys, via BRI, do have ultimate ownership of the masters to this album, (as they basically have with their recordings since 1970), which is currently released under exclusive license to Capitol Records. How long that exclusive license is in effect is another question, and of course the BBs can't do anything else with the masters as long as Capitol has the exclusive license.

Maybe it can get to #1 next week - Leno might help.
Not gonna happen. These days, albums debut at their top spot. This is the best it's going to be.
So true. I miss the days when we got to watch the hit albums slowly climb from week to week up to their peak. Much more drama, and you didn't feel as if you'd completely missed out by not buying the first week.

Yes, if it's an established artist, the first week is going to have the most sales unless they have a
monster
hit.

Man, I don't know if it'll reach # 1 but a top 5 Beach Boys album would be a........(wait for it).....mazing!
Also, the Boys are making serious coin on Amazon. Even with the download only being $5, the publicity is raising their back catalog in the rankings too. Sounds of Summer, 20 Good Vibrations, Pet Sounds, Smile Sessions are all moving up the Amazon charts.
I'm really happy for the guys that they are getting this kind of reception.

yes, nothing new here. Hits DD was the industry source. Plus, the fact I bought a cd last night for my wife's car may have completely thrown off their projections

Not to mention the fact that crazy European fans order an extra record from the States just to have it chart higher in Billboard.

If they're not counting the QVC stuff, and it ends up pushing them to #1.... all the new stories will tell how they unexpectantly returned to the top. So that will be a good thing.
