Adding up all the time he played with the BBs (later on) it's more than a year.  Plus, although he wasn't on the first official recording in 1961 he was kind of there from the beginning - learning to play guitar with Carl in the late 50s and being recognized by Brian early on.

I don't know if he was pissed, though. Maybe just tired or focused. Hell, he smiles so much these days I'll grant him a serious face whenever he feels like it.

I am sure David Marks is aware  that most everyone is hell-a-confused over exactly how the chronology between he and Al Jardine works.

Sometimes the easiest way to explain the significance of David's initial 18 months in the Beach Boys' historical chronology is to point to the fact that there are only five Beach Boys who were in the band when they BECAME famous and commercially successful - Brian, Dennis, Carl, Mike and David.

As a founder Al was in the band for a few months BEFORE they became famous, left, and then re-joined the above lineup AFTER they had found immense fame and success in the U.S. Then Dave was gone and the band (back to five members) continued to gain worldwide fame. Finally, Bruce joined AFTER they had found even more fame and success, just in time for the artistic peak and the last of the commercial peak.

Its really not that hard to understand and i wish more journalists were capable of getting it.

I guess most people go with the first recording. That's the easiest way if you're not a fan. It's still better than calling him a stand-in for Al.


I like that Mike mentiones Brian's Gershwin album. I was kinda pissed when he said at the Grammy one-on-one interview that Bruce is the only Beach Boy who won a Grammy and Bruce had to step in to make sure Brian's Grammy also got mentioned.
