I'll be buying the CD. As much as I love vinyl and still play it whenever I can, I do most of my listening these days in the car.

For the most part the major record companies do not press vinyl themselves any more.

The most daft case is EMI in Middlesex.....they sold off their world famous vinyl mastering and pressing facility feeling it had 'had it's day'.....it was bought out by a manager and continues to churn out top quality vinyl to this day....and one if it's biggest customers is EMI. Utterly daft.

I don't think the industry predicted that LP's would make a significant comeback - which to some extent they have. Most of the major players ceased mastering and pressing in house and contract out to smaller (even boutique) companies for vinyl. The quality is often excellent but it can mean a backlog.

I would rather wait than not get it at all. Though it is looking like I might have to order from the USA.

I'm sure this has been covered before both on this board and all over the Internet, but doesn't it defeat the purpose to have an analog vinyl rendering of a digitally recorded and mastered product?  Just pressing it on vinyl isn't going to give it back what it lost from doing it digitally.  It doesn't convert it back to analog, it just adds pops and clicks and whatever limitations the quality of your turntable, cartridge, and pre-amp subtract from the picture.  Though the artwork might look cooler.

The mastering of the vinyl (by necessity) has to be different than the mastering of the CD. So, potentially, the vinyl could sound better than the CD if it is less brickwalled or different EQ moves etc.
But you are right, it's not the same as an pure analog sound.

Yeah, it depends on how digital vinyl pressing is done.

In my experience, some reissues (Plain Recordings is especially guilty, some others are too) just run the CD off to the mastering plant (with the bare minimum of EQing). Or, in a slightly lesser evil, you can just use the same master, as I believe is done for certain new vinyl I've bought.

But if you make a separate, not even 'analogue' master as such but at the least a unique vinyl master, the sound is often amazing and comparable to analog pressings. BWPS is a good example. I'm away from my record collection right now, but I'm sure I've got other new vinyls that are the bomb and recorded/mastered digitally.

And I like crackles and pops  Wink

I'm going to do what I always do when a new Beach Boys CD comes out.  Or Brian Wilson Cd.

Drive to Best Buy; buy the album.  Go out in the parking lot and read the book while I listen to the radio.  Then, pop the CD in and listen to it when I drive 30 minutes to work.  Nothing like it!

I'll use Spotify or Rdio to listen to it in the car and at work, then I'll get the vinyl when it comes out. Even if the mastering is identical, I just want to be able to line it up next to the vinyl copies of everything else Brian's done. Well, other than Imagination, which to my knowledge has never been pressed on vinyl.

You must be the lucky one that actually finds these albums in Best Buy Cheesy
____

I'm taking the Best Buy route too, but only because I don't want to wait a day or two for an Amazon order. But normally, when going to Best Buy, I have to hear some lame excuse about how the shipment hasn't come in yet - then after poking around a bit find them stashed behind a Celine Dion album in the New Releases section.

By not buying the iTunes copy and spending it on literally about anything else.

The only time I illegally obtain Beach Boys music is when it's not available legally..

It's crazy but I couldn't bring myself to download the new album illegally if I tried..

I'll buy it from itunes at midnight, get the album in the store the following day and buy the vinyl sooner or later
