There's absolutely no reason to include "Funky Pretty" on another boxed set. Once was enough.

Here are a few that didn't make the cut on the 1993 GV box that deserve a spin this time:
 1) Lonely Sea
 2) Feel Flows
 3) Steamboat
 4) Girl Don't Tell Me
 5) Let the Wind Blow (live)

Funky Pretty would be very welcomed by me on a new box set.  Especially a live version from the early 70's.

P.S.  Obama in 2012

I, I bet I know what she’s like, and I can feel how right she’d be for me. It’s weird how she comes in so strong, and I wonder what she’s picking up from me. I hope it’s good, good, good, good vibrations, yeah!!

 Hi Mikie.

You know I could never get right with Funky Pretty! Flat ending to a great album IMO.

P.S.  Agreed re 2012. We may as well keep this train going another four years....

"Funky Pretty" should be on every box set, even those that have nothing to do with the Beach Boys.

At first, I couldn't think of a song that I would definitely NOT want on a box set. But here it is:

"Disney Girls" with its stupid sentiment.

Or "Tears in the Morning" or any other Bruce Johnston schlock.

I honestly don't understand why "Disney Girls" is even part of their setlist on this tour, or even on the Mike and Bruce tours. It was nothing close to a hit, and if they are gonna do something from the Surf's Up album there are at least four better choices.

Bruce needs a song to sing. also, apparently it got a lot of college radio airplay in the 70s, and girls liked it.

Hi Centrist Steve! Surprised to see you here after all these years! What happened, did you get tired of nobody responding to your posts on the waning Shut Down bored?

Just wanted to solicit a response from you. I still like Funky Pretty, especially live. Kinduva repetitive Holandesque astrology ending, but always liked the melody and Carl's voice on that. "She said don't worry it's alright. I'm coming back when the aspects are right. And now I look in the paper each day......wonderin' what my horoscope will say. Funkay. Still remember Funkay Pretay!"

Because it's the best song Bruce ever wrote for the band, and the best song out of his lead vocals for the band, it's off a well-respected album, it's on several compilations and has been covered by many famous people (albeit pretty much all 70s soft-rock people). The show's meant to be about celebrating the surviving Beach Boys, and Bruce deserves a solo spot, and really the only feasible choices are that or I Write The Songs, and no-one wants that. I suppose they *could* do Deirdre or Tears In The Morning, but Deirdre is much less well-known than Disney Girls, and Tears In The Morning is a much worse song.

Plus, many people disagree with you. It's cheesy, but it's a fine, vintage cheese, like a mature Stilton. As for the songs from Surf's Up that are better, two of them are songs that relied on Carl's vocals and wouldn't really work without him. Of the other two, I'd be quite surprised if Til I Die didn't get brought in at some point, unless Brian or someone in his band really hates it, because Mike & Bruce have done it too.

Yeah, I'd be really disappointed if Disney Girls wasn't on any forthcoming career retrospective. One of my favorites from that era of the band.

"Disney Girls" was never a hit as in "Top 40 single" but it is a pop standard that has been covered by many notables. Art Garfunkel's version is great. It goes on the new box!

The live version from IN CONCERT is decent, I'll admit.

SHUT DOWN Vol 2 was a great Beach Boys board but it seems to be in terminal decline. I would go months between posts, but whenever I returned there was very little going on. Textus and Topgazza are still around, but the community has dwindled.

In retrospect, maybe the flux stuff did consume that board. Political talk has its place, but on Shut Down it ended up taking precedence over discussion of The Beach Boys themselves.

I am beyond thrilled for the reunion and this board seems to be the best place for news and discussion as it unfolds.  Surf is up, again.

I can understand that, but I'd say "Surf's Up" and "'Til I Die" are more classic, and they aren't getting played on the new tour.

What was the other unreleased album they recorded in 1966?  Teeter Totter Love?   Now that one's a stinkburger.

I know I'll probably catch all kinds of sh*t for this, but I've never liked either Goin On' or Getcha Back. Both are derivative in all the qualities I hate in my Beach Boys music, and make the BBs sound even older and stodgier than they were at the time with all that phony malt-shop nostalgia. That, and Mike sounds like he has an extra clothes pin on for both. Plus, that whole synthetic production on GB just doesn't do it for me. Yuck. Though, I reckon I'm going to lose on both accounts. They always seem to be the token representatives of their albums, and I suppose GB was a minor hit. Even though it might sound like Boys II Men to some, I guess I'd rather have Where I Belong on there (and maybe the title track from the album of the former).

For me, it's easier to pick the ones that were left off the first set that should be on. Too many for me to list. Thus, other than the ones already listed, I'll add Let Him Run Wild. I just hope that Brian's gotten over whatever convinced him that his voice wasn't good on it the first time around. That's one's essential for me.

I also noticed Susie Cincy on one of the nuke it lists. I have to say, as long as I've been a fan, I've never gotten the hatred for this song that it inspires in some (Denny's proclamation aside). One of the great mysteries of life for me. It's got the BBs at their Sunflower-era, chanting backing voices best, with Al doing his late 60s, Brian imitation (though not exactly). That great honking harmonica. Dennis Dragon's drums. That insane moment in the song where the bottom end all overloads, and that great buried falsetto right at the end. I guess maybe the lyrics are a little silly, but I actually like the story. I dance around when I hear it. Oh well, maybe, I'm just partial because of my home state name-dropping, and I always see the one-way streets of downtown Cincinnati in my head when I hear it! I've always liked Al's voice in that era, too.

Yep.  It sure did.  Unfortunately, the political discussion was allowed and it pulled that board down to what there is now, which is next to nothing.  So now we have Chuckie's board and there's free speech and no control freaks and no preferential treatment in the neighborhood!

Dennis called "Susie Cincinnati" a "silly piece of sh*t," circa 1976.

I think I'd prefer it on SUNFLOWER over "Fears on the Morning" or "(We'll Take a Bath w/ Bruce and) Deirdre." Sorry Bruce, but one tune was enough from you and Al is an original Beach Boy with a catchy car song.
