I second that. Rap remixes of PS, Smile, or any BB material for that reason is a pure abomination and apostasy of anything the beach boys were ever involved in. Perhaps 'Wipe Out' is an exception, do what you like to that...

All those were absolutely fucking dreadful, ruining some of The Beach Boys most beloved songs is not a good thing.

Well the first one not so good, but the second sounded ok to me.

Let's not get too precious about beach Boys tunes. I think it'd be fantastic if more hip hip producers started sampling them creatively - I think Smile certainly lends itself and that guy out of The Roots seemed pretty psyched about the prospect. Think about how effectively David Axelrod's sounds have been sampled by major hip hop artists such as Dre, DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist. Axelrod is a producer who created sounds not a million miles from Wilson and here's one of his instrumentals used brilliantly (and subtly, which is the key I think):

Bullion's Pet Sounds In The Key Of Dee was pretty great too.

What about the non-urban folk, the wanna be producers and diaper rash remixers who attempt reconfigure or recreate the the Smile that never was? They flatter themseleves.

If it never existed in the first place, how can it be re-created or re-configured?

Really, I agree... if fans can make mixes and remixes that are completely different than the 2004 sequence, then what's wrong with a rapper making a beat out of one of the songs?  It's a sign of respect.  I'd be much quicker to listen to a rap song with a sample then some of the crap "LSTN 2 MIE SMYLE MIXS" posts I see even here on this board!

The roots sampling smile sounds interesting. All those unused smile instrumental parts could make some cool samples for professional or skilled producers.

Exactly. As someone who actually produces hip hop artists for a living (not counting my own music or my day job), it baffles me how close minded some people can be. Besides, if it exposes people to BB music that wouldn't otherwise, then why is it a bad thing?

I just can't stand sampling full-stop, to me it's just a horribly lazy thing to do. But that's just, like my opinion dude, hundreds of millions of people seem to love songs containing samples.

Lazy?! Yeah, for those who just take a random track and then rap over it, yeah it can be lazy. However, real artists use it for other purposes. It's no where near as easy/simple as less talented (yet more commercially successful) acts would make it seem. I can see where you're getting at, because you can do so much with sampling that to hear people use it as a shortcut is annoying. However, there is an art to it.

I remember a mash-up somebody did of Kanye West with Pet Sounds called West Sounds(?). I burned a copy for one of my step-sons who is a dj and he liked it so much that he asked me for a copy of Pet Sounds. Kind of goes full circle.

If all you've heard is puff daddy do it, yeah I guess it could be lazy, but if we're talking about the roots doing it... they're more of a jazz band than a rap group, so I don't see why they'd be the ones to pick on.

I like the really heavily sampled stuff too, if it's the kind where they mix in just hundreds of different snippets, like DJ Premiere or whatever.  If you mean just completely jack a backing track to rap over, even that can be done artfully, "Nothing But a G Thang" is probably the height of that.  Completely sampled backing track, but completely re-recorded with live instruments... nothing lazy about that.

It's crazy how some dude have no idea what sampling is yet he calls it lazy...you think it's lazy? it's way harder then you think and includes hard work ...
It would be nice for a mainstream rapper to do a pet sounds/smile album and open a whole new generation to the beach boys!...the grammy's exposed the beach boys to my friends now they actually checking out their music...idk about you guys but that pleases me Smiley

I long for a world where musical taste is not subjective but objective. Where good and bad music is defined by law, and the creation of bad music punishable by death.

In that world I would be king.

And the music police would uphold my laws.

I don't like it, but for a different reason

Those drums are weeeeeak. Drums will make or break a sample-based track

In The Key Of Dee is amazing. J Dilla is amazing. Sampling can be amazing. Rap is amazing. Deal.
