I don't know how you could classify the earlier stuff as corny either. That early Marvin Gaye stuff was so strongly influential in bands like The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, Who, Small Faces, etc. Not that that alone is proof that it isn't corny but my God if Hitch Hike and Pride and Joy don't get you moving, I don't know what could.

Great post the fifties guys still had a lot of fire in their thrities and (once in a while) fortys

Absolutely. I think R'n'B, funk, soul and country'n'western for that matter were the natural directions they would've gone (and they did partly of course) if it wasn't for those many rock'n'roll revival. Carl Perkins really started to go downhill imo when he tried to always write a nostalgic "start of rock'n'roll song" that mentioned as many hits of the 50s as possible. Not unlike Mike Love with some of his latter Beach Boys contributions.

BTW for all, please listen to this.

Candi Staton - You don't love me no more
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKzG-LapHlE

It comes from her "I'm just a prisoner of your love"-album which is one of the best R'n'B-records I know

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Again, though, don't understand why they're corny. Winchester Cathedral is corny. Pride and Joy on the other hand... I wish I could see you say that to Pete Townshend.

Also, I own two of those albums and have heard the other two. I couldn't get into I Want You or Here My Dear (though I do like the story behind the latter). I love What's Going On. There's some good stuff on Let's Get It On too.

On the subject of old 50's dudes being cool in the 60's and 70's, this clip of Bo Diddley is SO BADASS.

Yes. That song is actually "Bo Diddley-itis" from one of his funk albums, not "Hey, Bo Diddley!" as it says. This is the studio version:

And here's another one of the above mentined album by Candi Staton:

Pride & Joy is my favorite Marvin Gaye song.  People use words like "Corny", but what they really mean is "It's so true I don't want to admit how true it is".

It's the same reason people consider Elvis' voice "corny".  It's because it's perfect.

I'm a HUGE Temptations fan. My goal is to get every album they've put out.  I think they've done about 65 albums since 1964.  Grin I have probably 30 of them. The problem is that several of their albums have never been issued on cd.
Then download them like everybody else does..use itunes or amazon Smiley
who was your favorite lead singer...David,Paul,eddie or Dennis?
I know I'll catch a lot of flack from certain people here, but in my opinion David Ruffin was/is the greatest R&B/Soul singer ever. Dennis and Paul are VERY close, though.

I've often thought that too... he had certain things he could do, that no 1 other singer COULD do.  For instance, he could sing with that really nice "crack" in his voice, like Teddy Pendergrass or somebody has; but could also sing smooth, or sing an incredibly high falsetto.

Here's a cool one: After Ruffin was kicked out of the Temptations it almost seems like his mission was to record songs that showed off how great he was.  In 1975 he recorded this motherfucker here.  There isn't 1 person, that ever lived, that could sing this song.  Michael Jackson is incapable of singing this song.  Gerald Lavert doesn't have it like this.  I mean in my opinion, only David Ruffin could have recorded this.  I'm not saying it's the greatest ever, it isn't.  I'm just saying it's impossible to sing like that.

Michael was great and could sing about anything, but not that one Smiley

Here's Michael at his sweatiest:

At the end he pulls off a pretty good Gerald Levert.  The whole last half of the song, he does a pretty good impression of his younger self.

Back To Stax: Memphis Soul

This DVD contains three outstanding programs in a who's who memorial concert filmed live at the Palais De Festivale Hall, Cannes, France. From the early 1960's and into the 1070's, Stax Recording Studio established itself as the heart of Soul music and gave birth to many Memphis music legends. It became the very model of the greatness all races can create when working together. Features performances from Sam Moore, Booker T & the M.G.'s, Carla Thomas, Phil Upchurch, the Memphis Horns and Eddie Floyd.

Newguy, you need to check out The Persuasions. Acapella soul. Make sure to watch past the awkward interview too!

Nah man, the acapella is what makes it so unbelievably righteous! I love them.

All I Have To Do Is Dream is The Everly Brothers (and everybody loves The Everly Brothers on some level), and the second one is a spiritual.

The early 70s is considered a period where soul music embraced the album concept producing unified solid works like 'whats goin on' 'There's a riot goin on' or 'talking book', all classics but 'Keeper of the Castle' by the Four Tops from 72 kinda gets overlooked. It's a gem, you should check it out

I read some amazing interview with Isaac Hayes the other day where the interviewer brings this idea up, something like this...

Interviewer: So, in the early 70's soul artists started making 'big' and proper albums, making statements and expanding the form of soul music. Did you feel like you were all your contemporaries?

Isaac Hayes: No, because I did it first.

 LOL
