I'm a HUGE Temptations fan. My goal is to get every album they've put out.  I think they've done about 65 albums since 1964.  Grin I have probably 30 of them. The problem is that several of their albums have never been issued on cd.

Blows Beyonce and Rihanna out of the water, could pass for an old Stax outtake, even though it's from 2007:

I know I'll catch a lot of flack from certain people here, but in my opinion David Ruffin was/is the greatest R&B/Soul singer ever. Dennis and Paul are VERY close, though.

I love James Brown, Ike Turner, and The Jackson 5. I've got most of the Motown hits by others on those triple LP sets they put out in the seventies. I also like people like Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Arthur Alexander, Fats Domino and Ray Charles.

Some of the ol' cats updated their sound - at least for a while - with some funk stuff in the late 60s/early 70s. Bo Diddley did three cool funk albums. Jerry Lee Lewis' "Southern roots" (featuring the MG's) remains one of his best albums. Also Elvis' '69 Memphis recordings and some of the cuts he did at Stax (If you talk in your sleep, I got a feeling and much of the Raised on Rock album) were very much in that language.
Plus everything Tony Joe White did back then - right into the 80s  - was funky and souly (does this word exist?) to death.

Here are some cool ones:

Bo Diddley - Bite you
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf8rDqZJJa0

Jerry Lee Lewis - Just a little bit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dvwhM1vlSc

Fats Domino - Everybody's got something to hide except for me and my monkey
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeMwNd-WSXo

Little Richard - Nuki suki
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pb9-yRNnO0

Tony Joe White - I get off on it (1980)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVqXxK-gK0w

I couldn't listen to the videos, so I hope I got all the right versions.

PRO SHOT BEACH BOYS CONCERTS - LIST

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

Like The Miracles,The Temptations,Marvin Gaye,The Drifters(etc.)? If so, Who's your favorite group?

Probably my favourite overall kind of music. I tend to like Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye the best but I love them all and I have been hunting down obscure stuff since around 2001.

Yeah. I've heard them. The Temptations one is good - definitely Smokey doing his Oo Baby Baby shtick. I don't mind the Marvin Gaye one but I prefer his pre-What's Going On stuff, personally.

Grapevine? Corny?! Dear god, man. Sometimes I think it's the perfect pop song.

I always hated that song Sad...I felt Marvin Gaye didn't find his own voice til What's Goin On...That's truly his style..then again he said in many interviews he always wanted to be a balladeer like his idols Frank Sinatra & Nat King Cole.

That doesn't change the fact that Grapevine is insanely brilliant. You can't convince me otherwise!  Grin

For Isaac Hayes, go into the thread I made about him, and check out the youtubes. If By The Time I Get To Phoenix doesn't convince you, well, I just don't know.

I love The Jackson 5 with a ridiculous passion, but in terms of his solo stuff my dad used to play it around the house ALL. THE. FREAKING. TIME and unlike Parliament/Funkadelic and Kraftwerk (his two other big obsessions) I can't really listen to it.

Speaking of which, you need Parliament/Funkadelic in your life! where else can you see this?

Yes, that is George Clinton waterskiing on two dolphins dressed as an all-white cowboy with shag flares, a red neckerchief, ridiculous sunglasses and rocking a ghettoblaster. See what you're missing out on?  Grin
