It's a little bit better than Mark Linett's bloody slaughter.

2004 version FTW!

Cablegeddon - you need to get the sand out of your vagina, the Smile Sessions mix of Vega-Tables is immense. Calling it a 'bloody slaughter' is an insult to everyone involved in the Smile Sessions.

I find this so strange, first time I heard it I was overwhelmed at its brilliance.

Each to their own though I guess, sorry about the sandy vag comment!

Dude, you can hardly blame Mark Linett for following the evidence on tape boxes/BW's own choices. 1st Chorus, 2nd Chorus, Fade To Vegetables, the double 'I know that you'll feel better verses' like on Smiley, and so on...

People have called it the greatest mix on the box, and they could well be right. Certainly nowhere near 'bloody slaughter' considering the more questionable choices they made.

I'll admit, I'm not fond of the ending to the Smile Sessions version. Repeating the "I know you'll better..." part twice makes no sense to me. It worked in the Smiley Smile only because of how extremely minimalist the rest that version of the song was. It was like the song suddenly burst into color. But the Smile Sessions versions already has all kinds of crazy, fully arranged sections that come before the repeated verse.

It just falls flat for me.

the Smile Sessions version of Vegetables (aside from the H&V theme sort of thing in the outro which is cool anyway) is the version of Vegetables I had in my head as being the definitive version, so I totally love it. it conforms to all my expectations.

I have to admit, the ending on that mix is rather awesome.  Cool

In that case, you should pull a Costanza and always do the opposite.

The smile sessions version is along the lines of Brian's original idea for the song.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

I like the general idea of it and how they use the fade+Vegetables argument. I think the ending drags on a little bit too long, though-- maybe cut it once the fade is done.
