SMiLE: Reissue of the year…

… in the new issue of Uncut Magazine.
No 3 in Majo's equivalent chart, behind 1) Mickey Newbury's An American Triology {which is at 2 in Uncut's chart} and 2) Iggy Pop & James Williamson's Kill City..
So SMiLE is Uncut's 2004 Album of the Year and 2011's reissue of the year. Neat!

But it's no re-issue, is it ?

To sum it up, they blew it, they blew it consistently, they continue to blow it, it is tragic and this pathological problem caused The Beach Boys' greatest music to be so underrated by the general public.

They point out that it's hardly a new album either!

Pitchfork named Smile "Best New Re-Issue" as well, which I thought was odd. Seeing that it received a perfect ten, if it had been classified as "Best New Music" and an actual album it may have competed for Pitchfork's album of the year. Even with the "re-issue" tag, I believe it's only one of two, maybe three re-issues that have received a ten this year.

Could argue this a reissue because it was out on high-end box set sized bootlegs for a while.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

They could use the more accurate "archival release", but it'd be silly to split hairs.

Nope - I've searched for an original release of this music under the title

There's also a letter to Uncut's editor from a certain Roy Grudge!

Yeah, I was irked when Pitchfork classified it as such. Just because the music dates back forty five years doesn't automatically make it a "re-issue"

Thanks for that clarification – I was completely flumoxed. In was going to have to watch the entire Buzzc-ocks episode to get a vague Scun-Thorpe reference! I've gained half an hour back on my life!

A certain not unfunny moderator must have taken liberties with my post... should I sue him? Get a cool million?

SMiLE was the reissue/archival issue of the Millennium.

Isn't it a re-issue because 90% of it was on the GV-Boxset?

Well if you count the four CD's filled with session material, then no. Depends on how you classify the album I suppose, seeing that there were multiple release methods.

It's technically a re-imagining of BWPS, which was in turn was a re-imagining of an abandoned project; but the new re-imagining uses tapes from the abandoned project.
Sort of like:
Da Vinci abandons Mona Lisa unfinished
Da Vinci comes back 37 years later and does a fresh painting based on the original idea
Da Vinci comes back another 7 years later with a retouch of the original painting with some fly-ins from a later painting, some of which were sketched by his brother who had died in the interim.
Carol Kaye falsely claims she was the original model.
Mike Love says Da Vinci was too obscure and he always preferred Andy Warhol.

Yea sorry, I meant 90%-98% of the first disc of TSS. I consider it a reissue of the GV-box. Because you could think of it as a main disc and four additional deluxe/bonus discs.

Regarding all the comments that it's "not really a re-issue" or that it's more of an archival release, etc etc, we really have to go with what the mags decide. Can't keep moving the goalposts until we get what we want.
We can safely say it's the 5CD, 2LP & 2x45rpm, With Repro Booklet, Poster & Hardback Book In A 3D Box Release of the Year.
I'm happy with that!

Should we make that a new general category then? For every year to come? Like: Best 100-Year-Old Indian Marathon Runner Of The Year?
Results with that man are fairly predictable.
