Slightly off-topic from all the SMiLE stuff going on, but I was checking out the wikipedia page for SIP and came across this:

"The quasi-rap number "Summer of Love" was originally intended to be a duet, albeit one with Bart Simpson. (The song was also used in an episode of "Baywatch".)"

Can anyone else back this up? Or is it nonsense?

I would hate to think they made Carl perform any of those tracks more than once.

I was listening to a bunch of Still Crusin'/SIP era stuff last night (no, I DON'T know why) and just wishing someone would take the (pre-effects) vocal tracks and try and make a more Beach Boys sounding album (using a moretimeless production style) around them.

In the years before "Jessie's Girl", Rick Springfield recorded an album but the label (folded or) declined to release it and he was let go.  Fast forward to the time of his big success and the above was done (with no participation from him) and released as Beautiful Feelings.  It was awful as someone had done the exact opposite of what those 80's era (I know SIP came out in the 90's but Terry and the band certainly didn't know what year it was!) tracks need.  They ADDED Simmons drums, lots of synth, etc.  All they changed was the production.  The arrangements remained the same but I can't help but wonder.  It's entirely possible to add/change chords to the existing melodies (throwing in a 5th suspended, changing a major to a minor) and play with the arrangements, even if it's something as small as using a different picking pattern on the guitar.

Because the boys tried multiple arrangements (to little or no avail) on SIP, it makes me wonder if it's possible to take out pretty much everything but the group's vocals, start from scratch and make a decent album out of it.   Probably not, but it's a thought.  I suppose the main problem would be the benefit to cost (of time) ratio.

Just about every non-cover song on that album save for Lahaina Aloha would need major lyric re-writes.

As a BW/BB fan since 1996, SIP is the one album I've never listened to.  Seriously, is any of it worth a listen?

Jerry Schilling (I think), once said that Carl could sing the phone book and make it sound good.  Before you say this album shouldn't be listened to, remember that quote.  I have always contrasted SIP to Love You.  Love You was excellent material (to most listeners) with awful vocals; SIP the exact opposite.  Bad material, but man do Carl and Alan sound good singing it. And, please, no jokes about the phone book being better material than SIP...heard that one already

Can't say you have a complete BB collection without SIP. I never disliked it and now treasure it and its unique packaging, artwork and contents.

Can`t wait until I`m in my 40s when the vaults are just about cleaned out and the BBs estates decide to release the 7 disc deluxe audiophile Summer In Paradise box!

I have heard it said that Summer In Paradise is the polar opposite of Pet Sounds, in that PS is a wonderful album with a terrible cover, and SiP is a terrible album with a wonderful cover.

True... but doesn't mean you have to listen to it more than once. Or in my case, five times, and for three of those I was paid to assault my ears.

"Lahaina Aloha" is really worth checking out and "Strange Things Happen" is rather pleasant I think, mostly just because of AJ's great lead vocal, however.

AGD wrote my two favorite lines ever written of music criticism about a song from this album.  I quote from memory, because it is so awesome:

"One of the worst cover versions by anybody, anywhere, at any time.  There is absolutely nothing about this track to commend."

I never understood that reaction to "Remember...". I never thought much of the original version. A pretty bland arrangement, really. Carl and Boys' at least gave it some zing! It could have done without the carnival organ sound, though.

Feel like I might liveblog my reaction to my first ever listen to Summer In Paradise.... I've never really been in the masochistic kinda mood until today....
