The little bird who heard it through the grapevine told me the session went badly, and ended with major disagreements. I guess in a way that really is getting together and doing it again.
Yikes, that's a disappointment.

Actually it is the best news I've heard all day.  We don't need a crappy re-recording of a decent song.

Jon - Why no David Marks?  Kinda makes my blood boil that they'd do something like this without David.  Maybe they'd get along better with David around.  He seems to have a calming influence.

I'm guessing he wasn't in CA at the time.

Benig a Beach Boys fan...

The guys we are supposed to admire are recording for the first time in fifteen years (equal to the time span between Surfin' and 15 Big Ones, BTW)  and we're already hating it.

If it were new stuff, I would have high hopes. But re-recordings are one of the worst things you can do in music. No matter how good it may be as a recording, it's undercutting your own legacy. The Beach Boys went down that path too many times. They should know. On the other hand if there's something the Beach Boys are really constant in, then it's not learning from their own faults.
Again, here's hoping that Do It Again will be the only re-recording and just as the theme for the DIA-reunion-tour.

Besides the 2 songs on SIP, where else have "The Beach Boys" done this, or are you also referring to the NASCAR CD and the such?

I hope this session was just a warmup to see if they can still work together in the studio on new material.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

If they did it with no intention of releasing it, just to see if they can work together, from Stebbin's bird, it sounds like the answer is that they can't still work together.

This band needs the guys from VH1's "bands reunited" or a therapist to work out their problems because if what Stebbin's source said is true, it is truly sad that a band is still fighting on the verge of its 50th anniversary.

Do Mike, Bruce, Al & Brian consider David to be a Beach Boy?  It sounds like being in CA had nothing to do with it, if he wasn't told about it until after it happened.  Are they talking to David about the 50th anniversary activities?

Maybe they were just having a little spat over Mike's logo designs. Although the scope of those design options is probably limited to: A. a surfboard or B. a beach ball

Recently I was told, in response to my observation that David needed to be a major part of any 50th anniversary plans, "the door is open".

Does that mean that they are actively involving him in projects?  It would seem that the door is slightly cracked if they are not inviting him to recording sessions.

I think David should be brought out like a special guest for the songs he was involved in but he's not necessarily needed for the Al Jardine era

Someone will have to fill in for Brian, while he's filling in for Carl and Dennis, So that person might as well be David.

The Al Jardine Era

Love it

I think after Dave has played Chug-a Lug, Al should symbolically float down onto the stage in a giant dentists chair and knock Dave off the stage with a huge toothbrush.

Or have a Murry Wilson impersonator "fire" David from the group. Brian might freak out though seeing "Murry" again.
