Sure, we could say the many appearances on tv or photo shoots from 1967 and back, but really I'm looking for post Smile eras when they looked super hip. I know there's a lot of admiration for Brian and the guy's looks for the Pet Sounds era/Smile era, which is to be expected.
Heck, even when the guys didn't think they were hip in Hawaii (after Smile in 67) in stripped shirts, I still think they looked really hip, especially Brian on organ (lickin his lips during GOK  LOL).
I really enjoy the beach photos taken where Brian has a beard (around Wild Honey era), I wanna say Audree was there as well, I could be wrong.
Though when it came out (69), I think the 20/20 album cover pic is pretty steller....The Sunflower group photo looks like a bunch of hipsters sitting with their kids....at least half of em are (hipsters), haha.
The promo video for Don't Go Near the Water makes the bearded era look great.
Their performance of You Need a Mess of Help to Stand Alone that was floating around on Youtube is pretty fab too.

Brian & Dennis always seemed to look hip from 1966 onward. The rest of the band did not look hip to me until the Surf's Up era (circa 1971).

About the Friends' era you've mentioned, do you mean the album cover or a particular picture?

BTW, I can't get enough of Brian's looks during the Smile era, whether it's him with sunglasses laying around or at the piano or the shower-cap in the pool, he just had an ultimate hipster look and it's really annoying when those who think they really know hip 60s music and think John and Paul were hip, I think Brian was more possessed and encompassed by the music/psychedelic/hip scene.

Don't blame for the the pics overload

Well, for me

Brian,

Any time from Today -  Friends, when he obviously took pride in his style

Carl, and when he had the kick ass sideburns

Mike

Dennis was always stylish before POB

Al, just a normal dude

Bruce, see moustache thread

Brian's always looked hip no matter what he wears. I generally like the clothing era 1961-1967 the best for everybody in the group.

And production aside, I’d so much rather hear a 14 year old David Marks shred some guitar on Chug-a-lug than hear a 51 year old Mike Love sing about bangin some chick in a swimming pool.-rab2591

I think Bruce had a bit of a hip thang goin' on in the late 60's. It definitely sit well with the persona he put forward in interviews and such. The whole moustache thread can really go either way.

Carl also had something about him, but it's more his dashing suaveness than being "hip" per se (except maybe the 77-78 period).

1964.
Definitely 1964 was hip, except for Mike Love's shorts on the "all summer long" cover. My favorite year is 1965, when the clothing is transitioning from the early 1960s clothing that was an extension of 1950s wear, to clothing that is influenced by the 1960s that most people rememeber....

I think that's Bun E. Carlos standing in for Carl!

And how is it that Mike's the least offensive one in that clip?Huh?

I guess that's what happens when you're always un-hip!  Razz

Carl looked really cool in 71-73.
Mike looked cool for a couple of days in 72.
Dennis always looked cool up to the late 70's.
Brian's early 70's proto grunge look was cool.
Al and Bruce have never looked cool.

Too bad Bruce Johnston didn't regrow the moustache during the dreaded micro shorts era in the early eighties... police
