Alright.  Someone on the other thread mentioned that when I said one member of the Beach Boys is mentally ill, that I was selling the band short.  LOL That is hilarious.  It's got me to thinking though.

I've heard the idea brought up before that Michael Jackson was crazy... but that he may have actually been the most sane member of the entire clan.

So while everybody acknowledges that Brian Wilson is generally regarded as bat-merda insane, maybe we should analyze this.  Who's really the most off their rocker?  Who's the most normal?  Most of what Brian does and says makes sense.

So who is it?

Brian - certifiably unable to take care of himself, he's got a conservator appointed and has forever.  Won a lawsuit in court (I believe) basically saying he was out of his mind when he signed away the rights to his music royalties, etc.

Mike - Sued everybody he ever knew, including his own family.  Thinks Kokomo is deep because he mentions levatation in it.

Al - known to cohort with goats.  There is photographic and videographic evidence to prove this.

Bruce - has worked with Barry Manilow.  (we may have a winner here)

Dennis - hung out with Charlie Manson.  Only member of the Beach boys to actually Drown.  (god bless him)

Carl - I'm sure he was crazy in one way or the other.  Fill me in.

(P.S. all this is lighthearted, I love all these guys)

In terms of actual mental illness, I think you've basically got Brian, and Mike on one occasion when he was fasting.  Dennis' deal seems to have been extreme ADD, Carl's, from what I was told, was being extremely guarded and reserved, possibly to the point where it affected his health.  Mike accused Al of chronic depression (or some such) in one of his lawsuits, but other than some occasional odd statements to the press and irritability on occasion, there's no evidence of this.

In terms of being "whacked out" -- probably all of them.  Those guys were placed in an impossible situation in a very early age, were managed by a family member who WAS crazier than any of them, and were stressed out for most of their adult lives.  They coped as best they could.

I'd have to go with David Marks for quitting.

Carl stayed in the band pretty much through all the BS from 61- 97.

Pretty loco in my book!

No kidding, instantly the thought of prolly half this board.
My question is where's the poll for this?
We should get some percentages on everyone's opinion.

we've got to disqualify Murry though, that's why I said members of the band. If Murry was allowed, he'd of course win with 100% of the vote. Also we can't allow hangers on or associates, because Charlie Manson and Eugene Landy would win.

It's got to be the traditional accepted members of the band.  Ricky and the other one both qualify.  David and Bruce qualify.  Toni Tennille doesn't count though.  Plus she's too hot to call crazy.  I'd like to do that to her one more ti...

ugh, sorry.  Back on track.  Plus I just realized she's 70 now.

I can't figure out how to edit it and add a poll, sorry!

Uh, that "other one" would be Blondie Chaplin. Not to be too nit picky, but people on a board like this should know the names of the Official Beach Boys. Just sayin'...

Nah, you can't be serious; He's toured How Many times with the Stones? they obviously love him, which must say something in his defense, for you.
Blondie was a great addition, IMO.

I'd say without a doubt Mike is the most whacked out member of The Beach Boys

The guy's exhibited all manner of confusing and bizarre behavior without the aid of hard drugs or diagnosed mental illness for almost 50 years.

He plays guitar in the Rolling Stones, covering for Keith Richards on guitar from behind the amps.

Mike gets my vote.  If he had any talent, the rest of the band would've hired Landy to save him.  He's always been thin, would've been a breeze keeping him from the fridge...

Brian and Mike in a tie though Dennis had his bizare moments himself! Al seems pretty normal. Bruce I think is deceptively normal. He actually seems like he has multiple personalites at time. Carl I am sure was pretty quirky in some ways but was quieter so it didn't show as much. BTW no insult meant to any of them, the post is in fun

Half-assed or not, he still was a Beach Boy, just the same.

Also played several years with The Band.
