I've always been very fond of this painting and I think it captures Brian in the era very, very well. I think a bit too much of the so called drama is pinpointed on this very nice painting of Brian and other facts are overlooked.
It's safe to say David and Brian's friendship was already strained when the painting was completed. Brian was then sinking into a depression and withdrawing from whatever he could due to his fear. I think that's why things between David and Brian happened as they did. The painting was just an innocent bystander.
