I didn't know where to put this question, so I'll try here...
I was just listening to the radio, and they had a "flashback" segment. Question: What song was No. 1 on the Billboard Singles Chart, 40 years ago, on January 11, 1976?
I don't see a Jan 11, but a Jan 10 and Jan 17:
January 10 Convoy C.W. McCall
January 17 I Write The Songs Barry Manilow
http://www.billboard.com/archive/charts/1976/hot-100
Yes, it was the Bruce Johnston-penned, Grammy Award-winning, "I Write The Songs". I had forgotten how close that song was to the 15 Big Ones/"Brian's Back" campaign.
Do you have an idea when he wrote it? I wonder if he felt that his moment to shine was overshadowed.

I'm assuming it was written in early 1975. The Captain & Tennille recorded it first in 1975, then David Cassidy also in 1975, and finally Barry Manilow released it as a single in November 1975. Pure speculation, but I would think Bruce felt more overshadowed by Barry Manilow (how many people thought/think that Barry wrote the song?) than by The Beach Boys because The Beach Boys never had a Grammy, and regardless of the success of Endless Summer/Spirit Of America, hadn't exactly been burning up the charts.

Good point. I thought Barry Manilow wrote it for a long time.

Hi Chownow, here is an earlier thread from this board with an interesting discussion of Brian Wilson's humor during that era. Someone who knows Brian Wilson says that he intentionally uses humor and shifts of mood to reach the listener at a different level:
http://smileysmile.net/board/index.php/topic,20138.0.html
Thanks for this! I think what Ang Jones and Debbie Keil Leavitt were saying matches my experience of listening to Pet Sounds. A build up to something you think is going to happen (musically speaking), then something completely different happens. Strikes me as very funny every time. Great stuff.
I might resurrect that thread when I get more time to reflect on it.

Was listening to the weekly 60s XMSirius survey countdown, which covered the top 40 US pop songs for this week back in 1964.
Host Lou Simon at one point said that there was one song he'd play even though it was no longer in the top 40 - it had been a top 10 hit and was still in the top 100. He said that he remembered his brother getting this record and went crazy over it. Said that it was his favorite BBs song.
The song? Be True to Your School! He said that it was happy music, a 'non-stop smile' with wonderful production. Then he played the song.
About a half hour later, after playing a bunch more hits on the survey, Simon said, 'Do you ever have a lyric that you can't shake?' Then he said the lyric in question -'My girl will be working on the pompoms now and she'll be yelling tonight.' He went gaga all of a sudden, taking the Lord's name in vain - twice - and said that he wished he could play the song again. Too funny.
BTW, #10 that week was Drag City, tied with Little Deuce Coupe as my favorite Car Song.

How did Mike's TM poem from 70s concerts go? I seem to have no recording of it.

Not a question, but insignificant and not worth its own thread. AXS has the following Beach Boys related programs airing soon (all times eastern):
Beach Boys: An American Family (1/23 at 10:30am and 3:55pm; 1/30 at 4:30pm; 1/31 at 2:50am)
The Beach Boys 50 - Doin' It Again (1/23 at 2:55pm; 1/23 at 3:30am)
The Beach Boys 50 - Live In Concert (1/23 at 1:40pm; 1/24 at 4:30am

All the "photo albums" on that page are called something or other "album". The one called "New Album" is just the newest "photo album".

This weekend I found out that on late 1964 live renditions of "Wendy", Al played his rhythm guitar part on Carl's 12 string Rickenbacker while Carl switched back to his 6 string Fender. What a revelation!
Noticed it on the BBC version on MiC disc 6, verified it on TV footage. I'm such a geek!

One that the artist passed on: David Lee Roth wanted them to do the bvs of his
"Just Like Paradise"
, but insisted Brian be part of the deal. That couldn't be guaranteed, so he withdrew the offer. Shame, coulda been at the worst, amusing.
Really!? (I mean, obviously, really: you wouldn't post that and then when I ask, "really?" say, "oh, no, I made that up for no reason.") I've never heard that before. It's timely, as I've just been revisiting various the guitarist from that band, Steve Vai, for the hard rock thread in the general music forum. (And DLR was quite a favorite of mine around that time, an excitable tween as I was, delighted by triple-necked, heart-shaped guitars and whatnot.) Is this written about somewhere, or were you told it by someone? I'm curious to hear more, if there is more.
Would love if AGD or anyone who knows the background of this would share the story (if there's anything beyond the already stated info to share).

Does anyone know what is heard at the 2:41 second mark of "I'm Waiting for the Day?" It sounds like a muted horn, heard twice and very quickly, and then it never repeats in the chorus after that. I've heard this song dozens of times yet never noticed this before. Didn't find anything mentioned in the Pet Sounds Sessions book either.

I listened to the backing track and the stack-o-vocals. The backing track doesn't have that 'muted horn' sound, but the stack-o-vocals does. So I think it's a voice.
--my daughter listened and typed the above, but I agree with her. I'd always thought it was a voice in the past, as well.
