Hi all. I posted about interviewing BW a couple of weeks back. Here are the results, with an extra band member interview thrown in to boot.

Six minutes with Brian Wilson:

An hour with Probyn Gregory:

"Well my synthesizer sounds so good that it makes me write good songs."

Seriously, very  nice piece, Clay.

Wilson Sings Gershwin? Seems like the Nilsson fan in Brian is coming out again (remember Nilsson Sings Newman?). I'm a little disappointed that the idea of completing Gershwin's unfinished work seems to have been largely dropped, although maybe one or two of them will make the album.

I think the unfinished Gershwin material was always going to be used for a couple of tracks, not the entire album.

Although I suspect there will be more yet to come about the Gershwin stuff.

Nice work. Thanks. Gee, I guess he doesn't want to work with Mike.

Mike Love ... suggested he was interested in working together to mark the Beach Boys' 50th anniversary. Are you interested in that?
No. We're not going to work with Mike.
What do you think of the other Beach Boys these days?
Pardon?
What do you think of the other Beach Boys?
I don't (laughs). I don't really get along with them very good.

I guess that's scotches the 50th anniversary get together ... does anyone want to buy an unused adult return flight ticket from Manchester, UK, to California, dated "Winter 2011"?

Many thanks for that Clay, and for taking the trouble to use your intro to set things in context. I wish more journalists would be that courteous to their readers and particularly to BW, instead of adopting the "weirdo" angle, which patently ain't entirely true.

It's funny -- I didn't plan to do as much context-setting, but after a few folks read the transcript, I felt I had to. They interpreted the short answers as Brian being rude. But he wasn't rude or pushy at all. Indeed, he was really nice. Just fast.

Actually, everyone with the BW org was exceptionally pleasant. From BW's publicity folks to Probyn. I've seldom had less trouble arranging interviews or getting information and pictures.

And about Mike and the Boys -- I have the recording of this. Brian doesn't just deny reunion plans in words. He sounds really, really opposed to the idea. That's why he laughs a little in the follow-up question -- he's almost apologizing for the force of his denial.

That's all I needed to hear to convince me that it won't happen!!!! Thanks Clay!!! That made my day!!!

While a reunion seems unlikely, it is still a shame these guys don't sort out their differences for their own and business reasons. For any 50th projects such as a compilation album, DVD, book or other, a combined and agreed effort by all parties would be better received IMO.

Interesting interview.

It's hard for me to understand, being so far removed from their personal lives, why Brian presently has such problems with the other members of the Beach Boys at present. I can understand not being artistically in tune with everybody; but to say that they currently don't get along very well....ouch. As far as we know, they don't have very much to do with each other, so why such strong words now? I feel sorry for them.

Given that it's been a day or two, can I draw folks' attention to the Gershwin album song titles?

Can anyone guess how Brian will sing "I loves you Porgy"?

Quote
I loves you, Porgy,
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
And I'll be glad

Yes I loves you, Porgy,
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
With his hot hands
If you can keep me
I wants to stay here with you forever
I've got my man

I loves you, Porgy,
Don't let him take me
Don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
I've got my man

Someday I know he's coming to call me
He's going to handle me and hold me
So, it' going to be like dying, Porgy
When he calls me
But when he comes I know I'll have to go

I loves you, Porgy,
Don't let him take me
Honey, don't let him handle me
And drive me mad
If you can keep me
I wanna stay here with you forever
I've got my man

I meant the gender issue. It doesn't seem like a song that you could easily convert from one to the other.

But yes, with feeling, too.

Maybe Taylor could sing it. But then it wouldn't really be BW sings Gershwin, would it?

Other notes from the interview (not published).

Brian does go out to eat at various restaurants as he tours (and sounds like he enjoys doing so).

He has not purchased the Beatles remasters.
