I just found this concert recording of Brian from 1986... he is performing solo.  God Only Knows sounds okay, but then Brian launches into "Surfer Girl", singing his original falsetto part, and its pretty darn good.

I love that pic in the video. Brian looks goshdarn cool as f*** in a robe, with a bass guitar, long hair and a beard.

What's the deal with the backing track though? The Beach Boys voices? But not the Wrecking Crew music? Wtf? That must've been a head trip.

I believe it's an early-1990s TV appearance; from the end of the Landy era.

Itīs from an unaired Dion DiMucci TV special (1990 I think).

In the late 70's, I had a poster of the Beach Boys and that picture was on it. There was another picture on the poster (I believe, it's been a awhile) with that same bathrobe and his arms extended over his head, acknowledging the applause. I think the photos are from a 12/31/76 concert.

EDIT: I also think that photo is on the inside sleeve of the vinyl The Beach Boys Love You?

There used to be a whole website dedicated to the Love You record, which had lots of those 1976-era bathrobe pictures.

His falsetto does indeed sound pretty good, although he did kinda cheat by lowering the key a step from the original. You can faintly hear the originally brilliance of his falsetto, which is always nice to hear.
