I think this is the only thread I've ever started where something interesting and new appears! Those photos are awesome!

Check it out...

Is Dennis behind the register?  Can't tell due to the size, but it looks like it could be him.
Doesn't look at all like Dennis, to me, when you see them a little bigger. Be neat to find the people who are there and talk to them about working at the RR.

Well, given brain's attire, chances are it's from the same Rolling Stone shoot.

What's the recipe for those nachos to go with the guac (which looks very interesting -- who would have thought of putting radish in guac, certainly not me, haha)?

from the looks of it, I'd say it's a lucky thing the traffic control box survived the transistion.

I thought about that too! What would be neat and/or creepy is if the original 1969 photo were shown at a wider angle, and there is a kid seen walking on San Vicente toward Melrose, and it turned out to be the exact same guy as shown in the modern photo...cue Twilight Zone theme... Grin

A before and after comparison:

I dont buy it that the old bldg was demolished - looks like a major renovation though. You can see the foundation
around the structure is still the same.

From page 2, a wider angle shot of the present building to compare:

I'm out of the loop, did they say the entire structure had been demolished at some point, or was the foundation saved and the building itself given a major renovation as you said? It looks like they stayed true to the rounded corner-property design of the Radish if they did rebuild.

Also, this is the most kickass thread I've seen in a long time.

Well GF you may have missed the recipie post where it was said....

On a side note, I have been to the RELAX THE BACK shop that sits there now... the original building that was The Radiant Radish was demolished, and this one was built in its place.

I dont know if this is true or a major renovation was done but like you mentioned the present structure has basically the same footprint...

I'm not necessarily a guac fan (therefore wouldn't try the recipe  Grin ), but I saw that post originally (I posted the modern photos that same day as all this new info started flooding out on the board), and the guy posting it said "from what I understand", so I didn't remember hearing a confirmation if it were torn down entirely or just renovated.

I'm leaning on the side that the present building is a new structure entirely, but as you said they built it with a similar footprint. For one, I'm noticing the modern building looks like it has at least 2 floors, and Brian's Radish looks like only one with perhaps a loft or something.

And I'm also guessing whoever occupies that building now has no clue about anything we're talking about, most likely doesn't care unless it involves selling a mattress, and if one of us were to go into that business and mention Brian Wilson being in the building at one time, the first thing they'd say might be "the pitcher from the Giants?".  Smiley

If anyone is visiting or living in LA maybe they could drop into that store for an update. Those "new" photos I posted are a few years old now.

I just found some updated info on the old Radiant Radish location...if any of our LA residents can help confirm this info, please jump in! This could be outdated as I'm posting it from the East Coast with little to work with.

Check out these photos: It would seem the "Relax The Back" franchise that occupied the former Radiant Radish building when this thread started rolling a few years ago has relocated. The Radish is on the 8700 block of Melrose, at Melrose and San Vicente. A peek at the Relax The Back website now lists an address of 8500 Melrose, near the intersection of Melrose and La Cienega, several blocks east.

These newer photos clearly show that the Relax The Back lettering has been removed, and that the building itself has several "For Lease" signs displayed. And from the view on Melrose, the building itself is much more narrow (and smaller) than the previous photos suggested.

Again, if anyone in LA has an update to all of this, including if the building is still vacant and available for lease, please let us know! With the current healthy eating craze, perhaps some investors could start a new Radiant Radish there, focusing less on those damned pills and supplements and more on fresh, natural foods... Smiley
