Title: Radiant Radish Photos
Post by: grillo on October 15, 2008, 10:18:50 AM
My girlfriend has been bothering me for a photo of BW in the Radiant Radish. Can't seem to find one in my stash. Any help would make the home life that much simpler. Also, are there Any photos of the outside of the Radish? Thanks in advance.

I thought there was a picture of Brian in the Radish in his "autobiography."

I'm pretty sure there is, and I know I've seen one somewhere else.  The Gaines' book possibly?  He's wearing his robe and appears to be stocking a shelf with bottles of vitamins.  I'll have to check when I get off work.

The robe photo was first published in the fall 1971 Rolling Stone articles by Tom Nolan - only photo of the Radish, inside or out, I've ever seen.

Thanks. I remember it from the gaines book, but my paperback has lost both sections of photos! I don't suppose anyone  might post it?

Rolling Stone writer Tom Nolan went to the Radish and tried to buy some vitamin B-12.
He didn't have a "call" from his doctor to the store, so Brian wouldn't sell it to him.

Not a business model destined for success.

Thanks for the link! Bri looks way bigger than I thought he was during this period. this is how I imagine him in '74/'75.

Indeed, thanks for that!

Its ironic that Brian looks as big as he does in this picture, while standing in the middle of his health food store.

While the pic makes him look kind of big-he actually was fairly thin that year-take a look at the picture taken by Annie Liebowitz for the cover of that 71 Rolling Stone...he looks about the same as in 1970, though with longer hair

Yeah, that picture is deceiving, Brian really was about as fit as he'd been since he was a teenager at about that time.

But there's no denying it, Brian is just a big guy, even when in good health.  He exudes a certain magnitude in person.

But when Brian was a teenager, he was really skinny, wasn't he? Like, bony, even.

Around 1963 was his optimum, I'd say. He filled out, but he wasn't too heavy. In 1970 or so he lost weight, but I think he still sort of had the double chin. Kind of like 1966, no?

It looks like there are pet products on that shelf, in the lower right corner. I didn't know they had pet-health-care products even back then.

I always thought those photos of Bri looking thin around '70 were rather phony looking. Even Carl looks skinny in them. But when they are playing baseball around that same time BW has his mighty gut. Shadows, airbrush, or just rapid weight changing?

Brian from 64 to 72 could look fit or flabby pretty rapidly but he was never huge.  It's kind of like he's been since 96 or 97. Sometimes he has a gut and somtimes doesn't. He was pretty skinny in 1970 around the time of the Whiskey shows.

Speaking about photos: I have two particular favorites. It is the austere B&W photo, Brain is looking straight into the lens, clad in black, and Guy Webster took it.
Then: and this is a question: I did possess the Rolling Stone Special Photo Edition (I think it was their 25 bday celebration. It has the most haunting photo of Brian I ever saw. Stunning stuff. I lost the mag.) Where can I find that pic?

And a special treat: Vox magazine (UK) did an interview with Brian in 1995 or so, and it ran the most quirky series of Brian I saw, in yellow/sepia I think. As if it was done with laughing mirrors.

I will do some searching myself now.

There's a fantastic cocktail bar in Leeds in the UK - it's full of B&W photos of rock and pop stars, the largest of which is Brian in his bathrobe, strolling down the aisle of the Radiant Radish. Damn, wish i could remember the name of the bar, it'll come to me...

Hey guys! I finally have something to contribute to this thread. After literally years of on and off searching for more info on The Radiant Radish (one of the most interesting and least discussed aspects of Brian Wilson's dark period IMHO), I have finally found one.

This is The Radiant Radish, as it sat on the corner of San Vicente and Melrose in 1969: http://oi39.tinypic.com/2vkcak1.jpg (http://oi39.tinypic.com/2vkcak1.jpg)

I came across this photo in, of all places, a cook book that included a recipe for Radiant Radish Guacamole.

Hopefully this is new, and you're all as excited about this as I was. And then we'll have world peace  ;)

Hey, not bad for a first post, John! In all my 41 years as a fan, I've never seen this picture. Not in books, magazines, not anywhere.

The picture for the '71 Rolling Stone Tom Nolan article was taken inside this building. The sidewalk on the corner looks higher than the store front! The business didn't last very long.

"I can't sell you vitamin B-12".

Fantastic photo! First I've ever seen the exterior. Many, many thanks for sharing that photo!

Based on my calculations and help from Google, the first is a modern approximation of the original photo and the second is a shot of what business is on that location now, something called "Relax The Back" which appears to sell mattresses or bedding. San Vicente and Melrose, West Hollywood. I hope my calculations are correct...

By dangerous weapons, I mean cardboard paper towel rolls and stuff.

Haha I thought that might be the next request.

Radiant Radish Guacamole
1 large avocado, peeled and pitted
2 large radishes, finely chopped
2 green onions, both white and green parts, finely chopped
2 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro
Juice of 1/2 lime
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Mash the avocado with the radishes, green onions, cilantro, lime juice, and salt in a small bowl.
Serve with warm Blue Corn Nachos (a different recipe).

On a side note, I have been to the RELAX THE BACK shop that sits there now. They sell computer chairs, massage chairs, and similar ergonomic things. I meant to ask the owner if he knew the history, but he got a phone call, and was on the phone the whole time I was there. Me and my girlfriend were the only other people in the whole store. A very haunting old style shop, with stairs that go up to an even eerier top floor; but from what I understand, the original building that was The Radiant Radish was demolished, and this one was built in its place.

Brian Wilson -

"For one year [1969] I owned a health food shop I called the Radiant Radish. I spent too much money on produce, there wasn't much money coming in and we went bankrupt. But that was a great name."

The store might have been open for a little longer than a year, because the Tom Nolan interview (with picture taken of Brian in the Radish) was published in Rolling Stone in 1971.

Brian supposedly would often open the store at various different times of the day, sometimes in the early hours of the morning, just wearing pajamas. Another reason it closed was 'rumored' to be the owner's lack of business skills, and perhaps the failure to order new stock. If you listen to the end of the song "H.E.L.P Is On The Way", you can here someone (Brian?) say "Radiant Radish".

I see him in that photo and think "if only someone had given you the medical help you needed in 1969".

We would have probably heard music that continued to push the boundaries of pop production for another 25 years.

I think he just wanted to chill out and work at a health food store. Mildly eccentric, maybe (maybe!), but I don't think it has anything to do with his mental illness.

I'm out of the loop, did they say the entire structure had been demolished at some point, or was the foundation saved and the building itself given a major renovation as you said? It looks like they stayed true to the rounded corner-property design of the Radish if they did rebuild.

On a side note, I have been to the RELAX THE BACK shop that sits there now... the original building that was The Radiant Radish was demolished, and this one was built in its place.

I dont know if this is true or a major renovation was done but like you mentioned the present structure has basically the same footprint...

I'm not necessarily a guac fan (therefore wouldn't try the recipe  ;D ), but I saw that post originally (I posted the modern photos that same day as all this new info started flooding out on the board), and the guy posting it said "from what I understand", so I didn't remember hearing a confirmation if it were torn down entirely or just renovated.

I'm leaning on the side that the present building is a new structure entirely, but as you said they built it with a similar footprint. For one, I'm noticing the modern building looks like it has at least 2 floors, and Brian's Radish looks like only one with perhaps a loft or something.

And I'm also guessing whoever occupies that building now has no clue about anything we're talking about, most likely doesn't care unless it involves selling a mattress, and if one of us were to go into that business and mention Brian Wilson being in the building at one time, the first thing they'd say might be "the pitcher from the Giants?".  :)

If anyone is visiting or living in LA maybe they could drop into that store for an update. Those "new" photos I posted are a few years old now.

Title: UPDATE! Re: Radiant Radish Photos
Post by: guitarfool2002 on July 03, 2013, 09:10:47 AM
I just found some updated info on the old Radiant Radish location...if any of our LA residents can help confirm this info, please jump in! This could be outdated as I'm posting it from the East Coast with little to work with.

Check out these photos: It would seem the "Relax The Back" franchise that occupied the former Radiant Radish building when this thread started rolling a few years ago has relocated. The Radish is on the 8700 block of Melrose, at Melrose and San Vicente. A peek at the Relax The Back website now lists an address of 8500 Melrose, near the intersection of Melrose and La Cienega, several blocks east.

These newer photos clearly show that the Relax The Back lettering has been removed, and that the building itself has several "For Lease" signs displayed. And from the view on Melrose, the building itself is much more narrow (and smaller) than the previous photos suggested.

Again, if anyone in LA has an update to all of this, including if the building is still vacant and available for lease, please let us know! With the current healthy eating craze, perhaps some investors could start a new Radiant Radish there, focusing less on those damned pills and supplements and more on fresh, natural foods... :)

from the looks of it, I'd say it's a lucky thing the traffic control box survived the transistion.

I thought about that too! What would be neat and/or creepy is if the original 1969 photo were shown at a wider angle, and there is a kid seen walking on San Vicente toward Melrose, and it turned out to be the exact same guy as shown in the modern photo...cue Twilight Zone theme... ;D

Does anyone know the name of the guy in the photo so we can ask?

Maybe it was Jeff Foskett???  >:D

Got my Radiant Radish t-shirt delivered the other day. I love it!  It made my wife laugh even though she didn't know the story.  The material is soft and vintage.  Great job dellydel.

Most likely some developer thought they would get the older building eventually and finish off the corner. Kudos to the hold-out! :thumbsup

T-shirt is somethin' else.  It needs to be done up in XXL and sent to Brian, so he can wear it next time he's digging into a massive, heavily marbled ribeye.

Hey ya'll, I recreated the Radiant Radish logo from that photo... what do you think?

Should I put that on a t-shirt?  :)

An honest to God work of art.

Note the stock all over the floor in the above photo.

I'll be happy to take a look the next time I am down that way.

The shirt is SUPERB. I bought two and will probably buy some more as gifts--in some cases, for folks who will have absolutely NO idea about the history behind the logo.  :-D

Dellydel is a genius AND a hard-working guy!  :smokin

I bought a few soon after he started making them (two for me, one for the wife), and I wear mine all the time.  Only one person has ever caught the reference...it was an instant bonding moment.  ;D

i used to have a page from the yellow pages telephone book from that area and those years, which i remember had a Radiant Radish display ad printed in it.  it contained a small charicature graphic
