Chicago? Foreigner? Boston? Do they fit this category? Can only say I like Big Star, but don't know the other two.

One of my all time favorite's is Badfinger's Wish You Were Here. I also think Cheap Trick's All Shook Up is really underrated although that may have come out in 80

Ian, you are dead right about the Residents. The end of what America began: rock and roll.
Cheap Trick may be the best thing to happen to power pop in the 70s.
Find Meet the Residents, Maybelline.

As others have said, Cheap Trick and Big Star all the way.
I don't do Eric Carmen. Sorry. So the Berries will be last for me.

I know Chris the Rez-expert thinks otherwise, but I'd rather recommend starting with Duck Stab. That album opened up the Residents floodgates for me in a way Meet... never did. When I first heard "Blue Rosebuds" and "Constantinople" it made it much easier to go back to Meet.

Big Star of course.
Todd Rundgren formed the power pop band "Runt" with the Sales brothers after leaving "Nazz" in 1970. Although he eventually started playing all the instruments on his next albums, so not really a band per say, Todd's LPs through 1974 say "power pop" like nothing else. Hell, even Big Star covered one of his tunes (Slut).
I'd also like to put in a good word for the "Shoes". Their 1977 "Black Vinyl Shoes" LP (recorded in the family living room in Zion IL on a 4 track) was one of the first DIY records out there. Back before the internet, there was Greg Shaw, who promoted the hell out of unsung bands not signed to major labels, and put out their music on his own Bomp! records. This debut LP is what power pop is all about: guitars, hooks and harmonies!

Only 3 choices? I chose Badfinger since I'm not familiar with the other two... I've heard of the Raspberries but haven't heard their music. (yeah, yeah, I know... get with the program... )

If you like Eric Carmen's voice then you might like the PezBand... Simplistic Power Pop at it's best...
