Chicago? Foreigner?  Boston? :D :D Do they fit this category? Can only say I like Big Star, but don't know the other two.

Raspberries "Grestest Hits"
Cheap Trick "In Color"
Badfinger "Straight Up"

You shan't be disappointed!

Thanks.  Also never heard anything by The Residents, seen them referred to many a time on here!

The Residents are not only the greatest band that has ever existed, they are the best band that ever WILL exist.

One of my all time favorite's is Badfinger's Wish You Were Here.  I also think Cheap Trick's All Shook Up is really underrated although that may have come out in 80

Ian, you are dead right about the Residents.  The end of what America began: rock and roll.

Cheap Trick may be the best thing to happen to power pop in the 70s.

Find Meet the Residents, Maybelline.

As others have said, Cheap Trick and Big Star all the way.

I don't do Eric Carmen. Sorry. So the Berries will be last for me.

I know Chris the Rez-expert thinks otherwise, but I'd rather recommend starting with Duck Stab. That album opened up the Residents floodgates for me in a way Meet... never did. When I first heard "Blue Rosebuds" and "Constantinople" it made it much easier to go back to Meet.

Big Star of course.

Todd Rundgren formed the power pop band "Runt" with the Sales brothers after leaving "Nazz" in 1970. Although he eventually started playing all the instruments on his next albums, so not really a band per say, Todd's LPs through 1974 say "power pop" like nothing else. Hell, even Big Star covered one of his tunes (Slut).

I'd also like to put in a good word for the "Shoes". Their 1977 "Black Vinyl Shoes" LP (recorded in the family living room in Zion IL on a 4 track) was one of the first DIY records out there. Back before the internet, there was Greg Shaw, who promoted the hell out of unsung bands not signed to major labels, and put out their music on his own Bomp! records. This debut LP is what power pop is all about: guitars, hooks and harmonies!

consider-Blue Ash-No More No Less-issued by Mercury around '73-classic. Also from England-The Motors and The Records-both great!

Only 3 choices? I chose Badfinger since I'm not familiar with the other two... I've heard of the Raspberries but haven't heard their music.

(yeah, yeah, I know... get with the program... ) :D

Everyone now worships Raspberries and Big Star as the power pop torch carriers of the early seventies while groups like Crabby Appleton and Stories were doing the same thing just as well.

Big ups for including the s/t Emmitt Rhodes album! I don't know much but that album owns, no matter the category.

The Stories stuff is ... OK, but it's no Left Banke or even Montage. Certainly no Big Star or Raspberries, that's for sure. I'd throw it on the list anyway, tho. It's worth hearing, but no great shakes imo.

Haven't heard Crabby Appleton.
